Windows Mounts Automatically Disconnecting =(

I have two mounts from my WinXP box on Audrey with mp3's and pics for the picture frame app. After about 5 minutes of viewing pictures my mounts dissapear and the pictures quit loading. Is there a way to make the mounts permanent or is there something funky going on?

I'm mounting like so:
# fs-cifs -a //ufdah:192.168.0.1:/audrey /audrey guest guest
# fs-cifs -a //ufdah:192.168.0.1:/mp3 /mp3 guest guest

There must be something funky going on. The only time I lose my mounts is when my PC goes to sleep or is turned off.

I just right clicked on a folder named Audrey and selected "Sharing and Security" Then checked "Share This Folder on the Network" named it "Audrey" and checked "Allow Network Users to Change My Files". Same for the mp3 folder...

I have no experience with XP, so, I am just taking a stab.

Did I read somewhere that XP has a firewall either built-in or included with it? Could some settings there be causing the problem?

Do you have another Win (non XP) box that can connect to your XP box? If so, does it stay connected?

There is an XP setting that may make the difference in this case. Since I haven't done much research on how XP handles network shares I'm not sure what this actually does.

If you open your Control Panel (on XP), select Folder Options, then select the tab for View and scroll all the way down to the bottom there is an Advanced setting called "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)". Mine is not checked but since I only connect to the shares from XP boxes it shoudln't matter. I would make sure that this is selected in your case though. If it is already selected then just change it but most likely you are NOT using simple file sharing and Audrey is getting confused.

Now I just wish that somebody could give me the real deal on what this setting actually does.

Did you ever figure out what's causing this? I'm having the same problem with a connection to a Samba share - it just seems to disconnect after a few minutes. I have no problems mounting a drive to the share from a windows box. I am using a username & password, not guest / guest like on a windows share. From Audrey it mounts ok, I can start phjuke (which is located on the Samba share) and it plays for a while then dies. When I quit phjuke the terminal I started it from has a file not found message for the mp3 I was playing. If I then try to ls that directory, it just sits there. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Bobby

Is it the Home XP or Pro XP? I'm not sure if this will make a difference - I know that in XP PRO you must go to the CD (extras? networks? well, it's in one of the folders...) and follow the install instructions for "netbeui" in order to share files with another windows system (including samba as well). Microsoft I believe is trying to lose netbeui and does not install this by default. TCP/IP installs right away though...

XP Home may install this by default - I have made it a point to stay from the crippled version so I cannot say for sure. Now before you flame me I like XP PRO. I also like OSX, linux (all flavors) amiga OS, unix..etc.

Also, the first batch of XP Home Editions were beta - so if you purchased your system with it installed already (even after the release date) make sure you have all the latest updates and patches. Usually, a popup displays with "there are critical updates etc."

Hope this helps

I think the problem is with fs-cifs rather than the host. My Samba share is acting just like the XP shares described above - I think the shares are fine. I'm just going to try using fs-nfs2 & see how that works. Sorry that's not much help for the Windows boxes :o(

I also found fs-cifs to be unreliable. I switched to NFS and it's been rock-solid.

When I was using fs-cifs I found that restarting it would generally work okay. One idea, if you can't switch to NFS, would be to write a little program that sits in the background trying to open and read a file every few seconds. If it finds it can't do so, it would slay and restart fs-cifs. Probably it'd have to be multithreaded or multiprocess so you could detect a hanging open or read call.
