Update Log
Step-by-step description of how I got my Audrey updated

This is just a log of what I had to do for Audrey (from uBid) to get updated. I have a home network and used the USB/Ethernet adapter to get this done. Having played with it for a few days before I got my USB connector, there was a bunch of info in the datebook as well as my dial-up ISP settings.

Once I got the USB connector (3com 3C19250 - Bought from www.helloweb.com - $30 + $14 for 3 day S&H - not a plug, just FYI), I attempted all different sorts of methods in getting the Audrey to update over my broadband ... none of them worked. Finally, I got the update to work and here is how I did it step by step.

* CREDIT * The information here was gathered from the I-Appliance BBS on linux-hacker - thanks to all that contributed.

* NOTE * To do this, all settings in the Audrey will be destroyed - this includes mail, web sites, date entries * NOTE *

The software rev at this point is 1.00.17.01

(1) In the Action Palette, select "Password"
(2) Set the password to something, say "foo"
(3) Once the password is set, put Audrey to sleep by hitting the Sleep button
(4) Wake Audrey up, and type the *WRONG* password in three times.
(5) Let Audrey reset herself
(6) Configure Audrey with the proper information for your home LAN, but make the primary and secondary DNS servers:

206.184.77.241
206.184.77.241

(Yes, they are both the same)
(SPECIAL thanks to madmax for setting this up)

(7) Allow Audrey to go out and get the correct time (should be just after she starts up)
(8) Click the "Datebook" button and verify the current time
(9) Go into the "Download Options" section of the Actions palette and set the first time to the current time plus 5 minutes (make sure you set AM/PM correctly)
(10) Hit "done" and then press the Sleep button.
(11) Between 5 and 7 minutes from then, the "Activity" light on the USB connector should start flashing occassionally (coming on for about 5 seconds, then going off for a few, coming on for a few seconds, etc, etc). About 90 seconds after that, the screen will light up and a box stating that Audrey's software is being updated. (9 files in update)

After the update, I had software revision 1.02.04.01 RC24 2/5/2001

(12) Press and hold for a few seconds the Mail, Action, and Browser buttons (here-to-fore known as the "Three Finger Salute", TFS)
(13) A yellow box comes up saying "Checking for software update"
(14) Audrey updates herself with 7 files.
(15) She reboots herself.

After this update, I am running software version 1.02.08.00 RC26 3/29/2001

(16) TFS
(17) A yellow box comes up saying "Checking for software update"
(18) Audrey updates herself (fairly quickly)

After this update, I am running software version 1.02.08.01 FINAL 4/23/2001

(19) TFS
(20) A yellow box comes up saying "Checking for software update"
(21) Audrey updates herself with 3 files.

After this update, I am running software version 1.02.08.01 FINAL 4/23/2001 + SHELL (I think)

(22) TFS
(23) A yellow box comes up saying "Checking for software update"
(24) A yellow box comes up saying "Software is up to date"
(25) Update the DNS/network info to point to the right servers and restart Audrey.

Amazing summary, hope it works for me when mine shows up this week.
Thank you so much!
Should all of this stuff be written up into text files and hosted somewhere? I could put it on my site if so.

One addendum - between steps 21 and 22 when I say I have OS "1.02.08.01 FINAL 4/23/2001 + SHELL", let me state that Audrey reports that her OS is "1.02.08.01 FINAL 4/23/2001", but the shell actually works, unlike the previous update with the same OS revision.

In other words, after step 21, Audrey will report the OS as "1.02.08.01 FINAL 4/23/2001" and the shell will work. Please do not expect to see "1.02.08.01 FINAL 4/23/2001 + SHELL" as the OS version.

The instructions below are spot on. I followed them and had absolutely no problems, and was running a shell within 30 minutes. I'd just like to mention that with an "out-of-the-box" audrey, you can safely skip step 1-5. For my lan (linksys router behind cable modem) I setup audrey with a static ip of (192.168.1.25 (below dhcp)), gateway of 192.168.1.1 (router), and obviously the netmask 255.255.255.0. Using the DNS entries below, I don't think I reached the time server, so I had to fix the time myself (actions->date/time). Then in actions->download opts...uncheck the broadband box first. That took me a minute. Again, the out-of-the-box setup using usb nic automagically selected broadband updates for me.

Beyond that, file 7 in that first update was a doozie...but it all worked, confirmed with actions->about after each shutdown/reboot. After I finished, I just went back to actions->internet and selected the dhcp for the usb nic.

Excellent, excellent work.

Well, I must be doing something wrong at the beginning. The previous post talks about setting the Subnet mask, etc. Where are these settings, in the Audrey or the router?-I have a linksys. I use DHCP. In other words would someone supply more detail for the step "Configure audrey with the proper information for your LAN server"

Also, is there a restart or unplug after this step?

I really appreciate the help.

One more thing. Beside the shell, what changes or works better with the update?

Thanks for putting up this information.

I'm a new owner (2 days) and am trying to update my firmware. I have the USB Ethernet interface connecting through my WIN2K box using internet connection sharing. I can do everything on my unit - browse, email, etc.. apart from update. I follow the instructions, but after a few flashes of the USB activity light no display pops up...

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

In the mean time I'll try reseting again and start from the top...

BTW, What improvements will I get if I ever manage to update the firmware?

After switching to a static IP,the upgrade went great. What I notice is that the time server now works, AOL mail now works, not sure what else yet. To the person posting before me, maybe try a static IP and connect directly to the cable or dsl box?

Hi Again,

I think the problem is that I'm not using a Cable/DSL box, merely a dial up connection via the Ethernet link to my main PC.

If I do a ipconfig from the command prompt I get the IP address being assigned for the current connection. What I need is some way to get the PC to simulate the router and allow the IP of a conneciton to be used for the fixed IP address on the Audrey unit...

Either that or find some way to update via an image on a CF card. Has anyone made a similar easy to follow list of instructions for this method of upgrading?

Regards,

PJE

I'm confused. I see some references to using the IP address and other references to DHCP addresses.

here's what I get when I winipcfg on my desktop which is plugged into a cable modem.

Hostname : BEDROOM.cinci.rr.comDEST
IP : 65.29.213.250
subnet : 255.255.252.0
Def gate : 65.29.212.1
DHCP : 24.29.3.32
DNs : 65.24.0.167,168,169

So what #'s do I put where?????? I'm getting real frustrated.

Thanks,

Tom

almost there, in your audrey use (Action button>Audrey Options>Get Online>..broadband..>Static IP):
Static IP: 65.29.213.250
Subnet : 255.255.252.0
Gateway : 65.29.212.1
Primary DNS: 206.184.77.241
Secondary DNS: 206.184.77.241

After you are done with the System software updating voodoo, you can switch your audrey back to DHCP (it will ask no further questions regarding DNS etc.)
Does that work ?

Robert, or anyone else,

Thanks for the advice, I've tried that and no good. When update time starts the light on the USB connector flashes on for 1 sec the off for 1 sec and repeats 5 times but then nothing - no screen activity no error messages nothing. Also, I'm unable to access anything on the internet. Even if I use all the settings directly from winipcfg including the DNS. Do I have a dud USB?

I've been reading alot about how dialup people are having problems doing the update. My ethernet adapter is in the mail now, but I was able to update last night using just the modem. I have the shell. Unfortunately, I do not remember the software level I was at before I started. Maybe I got lucky and had a better level than the people who are having problems.

A few points which may be causing problems:
- You must unplug Audrey after changing the DNS info. Otherwise it doesn't 'take'.
- It takes long (2 hours) to do all the updates. Be patient. Many times, you will think it died. Stuff like 'checking to see if an update is needed' takes way longer than you think it should at 56k. (compared to windows update for instance). Be sure to be watching TV or something while you do this, and try to not look. Sometimes, the progress bar doesn't move for a long time, other times, it moves a little every few seconds. Be patient.
- Before resetting the times as discussed above, be sure you can get to marimba.3com.com and the other one mention in this forum somewhere (something ending in '.net.). Once you can get there, play with the time settings.

Other notes:
- The last update (3 files), went twice for some reason.
- After each update, my Audrey shut off. It said it would restart, but the screen never came on, until I hit the power button. Maybe I didn't wait long enough.
- Sometimes the modem made noise while dialing, other times it dialed silently. No idea why.
- My isp is AT&T global network (not worldnet).

Hi bholio,

What settings were you using on your dial-up? Do you have a fixed IP address assigned by your ISP?

What improvements do you get after the upgrade. I have three more Audrey's arriving in the next few days to add to my current one... so I'd like to know whether I'd gain anything with upgrading them.

It gave me the ability to royally screw up the configuration of Audrey. See 'proxy warning' thread.

thutch -

1. have you tested that you have a green link light on at your USB/Ethernet adapter ?
If not, you probably need a crossover cable to your cablemodem.

2. assuming you have a link light (and before doing any system update installations)
can you browse any webpages on the audrey ?
Just to check, you will see the Activity Led (yellow) blinking sporadically...

It could be that you are just not patient enough. It does take the smaller half of eternity to update the Audrey. Once you are in the process, I recommend you stick with it, half-updated systems are probably even more fun to repair than Windoze installations.

1) Yes the green light is on.
2) No, I am unable to access any web pages. The yellow light flashes and I've waited 30 - 60 minutes and nothing. Same way with updating, I've let it run overnight but nothing.

I'm having the same problem with dialup via whitemouse's site. It connects then does nothing for about 15 minutes then just disconnects.

I don't know if there is something wrong with my Audrey or what but everything seems to work except for connecting to the web.

I'm getting totally disgusted, everyone else seems able to uodate and connect and I can't even surf or get email.

Is there any way to update via netzero?

I have followed this and every other thread to try to get my new audrey to update. In addition I have cleared the ip cache on my router before I reboot the audrey so I can get a better idea of where audrey is trying to go.

Here is what my Cisco 2501 see after the reboot (setting the download time to a few minutes ahead).

Prefix/Length Age Interface Next Hop
12.0.0.0/8 0:01:14 Serial0.1 12.110.32.118 <-HERE
64.0.0.0/8 0:03:08 Serial0.1 64.45.60.6 <-TIME
206.184.77.0/24 0:04:57 Serial0.1 206.184.77.241 <-DNS
207.8.188.121/32 0:04:57 Ethernet0 207.8.188.121 <-Audr
216.102.107.0/24 0:02:07 Serial0.1 216.102.107.227 <-3com

So I appear to be going all the right places I just do not receive the update. The screen NEVER goes back to life without touching it.
I am running the 1.0.17 RC8 code.

Any help would be appreciated.

Still no luck with Audrey #1 mentioned above but I just took Audrey #2 out of the box and followed the same instructions in this thread *right out of the box* and it is updating away. I have read that people think it is some kind of DNS caching problem, I don't think so but I am going to add the spool into my own dns servers and see if that fixes audrey #1. My DNS servers were the first ones entered there.

I don't have much faith in it 'cause my router shows me audrey going to the DNS server that I typed in and also because I received the "audrey test" page on both the 3com.marimba.net and the marimba.3com.com urls.

Still looking for advice.

I updated my second Audrey last night 9/8 over dialup around 8:30pm. It took forever. Audrey doesn't light right up at the update time. Give it an extra 20 minutes. Resist the urge to poke at it if it appears to be doing nothing. I made sure the dns changes 'took' by hitting the test pages with the browser. I'm going to say 3-4 hours total from test-page to shell. I guess the update server is getting beat on pretty heavily. The first audrey updated in about half the time.

Are there new DNS spoof address for updating a factory-fresh Audrey? I've tried 66.17.16.[112|111] and 206.184.77.241 to nought. The Audrey connects for email at whatever times I configure in the Download schedule but never seems to initiate an update.

The Audrey connects to the Internet via a modified NetGear EA101 through a Linksys Cable/DSL Router. Audrey is configured with a static IP address, both DNS entries set to one of the aforementioned DNS addresses, and gateway set to the Linksys (192.168.1.1). The Audrey was also identified as the DMZ host in the Linksys configuration without success.

I'd sure like to get this Audrey upgraded so any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks to webcrazy for the help. I successfully updated my Audrey.

For those in a similar situation, that is, using a Linksys router, here's what I did:
1. On the router DHCP page, enabled DHCP (of course) and put 66.17.16.112 and 66.17.16.111 into DNS 1
and DNS 2 respectively and did "Apply". It's a good idea to go to the Logs screen and open the
Outgoing Log Table so you can watch Audrey's outgoing requests.
2. Reset Audrey by the wrong password method.
3. Configured the Internet connection by:
a. Selecting DHCP,
b. Entering a hostname (don't know if this mattered), and
c. Left DNS 1 and DNS 2 blank.
4. Set a Download time and put Audrey to sleep. From here on, I followed the published procedures.

Now on to remapping the keyboard to give me a CTRL-C :-Q

interestingly enough, when i tried something similar a while ago, i found that my 3Com "shark fin" cable modem was intercepting any port 53 traffic (DNS) and re-routing it to RoadRunner's servers. tested this by setting up DNS daemons on a machine i admin and verified that requests were never reaching it. so, if you're having trouble making broadband updating work, that might be a possible problem. those of you with linux and infinite patience should look into pdnsd, which is a dns daemon that can read a hosts file to automagically create non-auth type A zones.

Aardvarko -- I came to a similar conclusion. I ended up abandoning broadband, my barricade router, and updates with Audrey's modem. Instead, I rigged up a connection using my laptop to connect to dialup ISP, and ran WinGate on the laptop to make it a DHCP. I also messed with WinGate so that it reported the DNS (via DHCP) as 66.17.16.112. I used a x-over to tie the laptop to Audrey's Linksys. Set Audrey up -- hostname "Audrey", DNS 66.17.16.112 -- but it didn't work!

So, tried Audrey static IP. Still no go. Finally noticed that Wingate was firewalling :53. Once I dropped the firewall it was all good. I was even able to receive the Final + Shell update (Audrey saw the update as arriving via ethernet).

Mostly I'm just rambling here, but hopefully this may save some other poor soul from loosing a night's sleep. ;^)
