Are you trying to connect the Audrey to the WAP11 via ethernet, and have the Audrey access your local wired network & the internet via the wireless link? There is not much to it, EXCEPT that you will need 2 Linksys WAP11 dedicated to the two ends of the wireless-bridge. If you want to have a functional wireless access point for your laptop, and other non-wired network device, you will need another WAP11 (or similar) so configured as an access point, beyond the 2 WAP11 units for the wireless bridge.

The fact you need all these units is not obvious in the WAP11 documentation or anything else I've come across.

Another tip: to maximize throughput and minimize interference, take care to not use overlapping frequencies (in channel selections) between the bridges and the access point.

I'm trying to use the WAP11 as client... can I do that? I have an Orinoco AP (RG-1000) already.

thanks for the help!

Yes, you can use the WAP11 in client mode. You just have to make sure you have the latest firmware (at least 1.4g5) and the associated USB configuration software. That will allow you to configure the WAP11 as a wireless client instead of either an access point, or a wireless bridge. You'll also need a crossover cable to connect your Audrey to the WAP11.

I have tried using it as a client...
tried both hardcoding in the Orinoco's MAC address in the WAP, no go - would not even PING the IP of the WAP11
and tried all 00 for the MAC - could PING the WAP11 IP but not the Audrey's IP. Audrey could not get out, I could not get to the Audrey.

ideas anyone?

Ok, let see if I understand...

On the Audrey side: you have an USB ethernet adapter connected via crossover to the WAP11. Can you ping the WAP11 from Audrey? Does your USB ethernet show a link? How about the WAP11?

On the LAN side: You can ping the WAP11, but not the Audrey.

I would check the IP/subnet and default route (gateway) on the Audrey.

Let us know what you find and we'll go from there.

T.

Dreamland... exactly correct on the setup!

LAN side: I can ping the WAP11 (through an Orinoco RG-1000 wireless AP)

Audrey side: It gets a link light on the USB NIC and the WAP11. The IP address/mask is correct becasue it works when hardwired to the hub. Default Gateway is set to the WAP11's IP addr. From the Audrey I can ping the WAP11 but nothing else.

Hmm... I've only used the WAP11 as an access point (bridge mode). It seems like here it is acting more like a router; between the subnet with your Audrey and the WAP11 ethernet and the subnet with your Orinoco and your LAN. Are the IP ranges the same on both sides of your WAP11? It seems like they should not be.

ok I've got the same setup, except that I don't have a crossover cable...So far so good though because the WAP11 is in client mode and got an IP address in DHCP mode from my SMC7004WBR.

PS - As an aside, I don't think the WAP11 has the capacity to act as a router

still no crossover cable but I plugged both the WAP11 and Audrey in a mini hub and it works ! DHCP settings needed on the Audrey.

actually I swapped the WAP 11 for a Netgear ME102, but it's the same setup.
Pretty easy really:
1) Configure your WAP11/ME102 in AP client mode and enter the MAC address of your main wireless AP (it's a 12 digit numbe like (xx xx xx xx xx xx).
2) Assuming you have a router in (or connected) to your wireless AP, set the WAP11 in DHCP mode with wireless (not Ethernet) as the main network connection.
3) hook up the Audrey USN Ethernet adapter to the WAP11 RJ45 using a CROSSOVER cable and set it to DHCP
4) reboot the Audrey, that's it !

Yellow2: THANK YOU!

Firewall's IP is 169.254.0.1
Orinoco RG-1000 static address (IP: 169.254.0.200 mask: 255.255.0.0 GW: 169.254.0.1)

Audrey (IP: 169.254.0.35 mask: 255.255.0.0 GW: 169.254.0.1)
WAP11 (IP: 10.0.1.3 mask: 255.255.255.0 GW: 10.0.1.1)
both are set to DHCP and receiving address info from Orinoco RG-1000

I can ping the Audrey and it gets web pages!

Ok, those directions were close but didn't work for my situation. I have a linksys BEFW11S4 wireless AP+ 4-port 10/100 switch router box which has been wireless working for other things as clients (desktops in other rooms using a USB wireless adapter). I saw the WAP11 and thought I'd try to link wirelessly to the Audrey to see what I could do. Audrey's been happy with the LAN connected Netgear EA101 (hacked) for quite a while [much applause to Michael McSharry for the CF mail tree!]. I have read the help files, the online knowledge base, the FAQ's, and even RTFM! but nothing has resulted in connection across the wireless to wireless ethernet with the WAP11 in the way. What is the minimum distance away these can be before they won't work? It isn't in the documentation anywhere. For testing, they are 4 feet apart just to make it easier to tweak....

I have the sytem set as open, WEP disabled, same channel # (6) on both, with different ESSID's per the odd sentence in the WAP11 help file stating that the channels had to be the same but with different SSID's, and the WAP11 is in AP Client mode. Updated firmware on both the router and WAP11 today so they are both at the latest possible firmware revisions.

I'm lost, and was hoping somebody got this working somewhere.

If / when I get the answer - if not from here - I'll post it.

huggy(d1)

hum...I didn't specify, but I use the same SSID on the WAP11 and SMC7004WBR. If you don't, I can't think of a way they'd be able to communicate. You CAN and probably should use different channels though, that might possibly increase the bandwidth.
I don't think there's any minimum distance, at first mine was 2 feet from the SMC7004WBR.
You're probably almost there !

Has anyone else gotten this to work?

I can ping my WAP11 from my laptop.
I can ping my WAP11 from the audrey.
I can't ping the audrey from my laptop or vice versa.

Here is my setup:
Apple airport base station at 192.168.0.1
WAP11 at 192.168.0.150
Audrey at 192.168.0.6
Laptop at 192.168.0.4

WAP11 and Airport both have the same SSID.
Both are on the same channel.
The WAP11 "preferred BSS" is set to the MAC of the Airport.

Are there any tools to troubleshoot this?

cypherpunk - you're in AP Client Mode right, not bridging mode ?
You seem to have the proper setup, check this though, set the Wap11 to DHCP with Wireless being the main interface. Set the Audrey to DHCP too.

When you ping the WAP11 from your laptop, which AP are you hooked up to ? If you're hooked up to the Airport then you can't be very far !

I have heard about incompatibilities between the WAP11 and other 802.11b APs but it doesn't make sense IF you're using AP client mode.

cypherpunk-
see my post above. notice that the WAP11 has a different IP network than the other devices. Set the Airport to allocated a 10.whatever address via DHCP. It will work. I have the exact same setup (the Airport is the Orinoco RG-1000).

took me a while to figure it out.

Livin-
I tried to set mine up like you suggested, but then my Audrey said it could not get an IP address.
I also couldn't ping the WAP11 from either the audrey or my laptop.

There must be something I am missing.
What version of firmware are you using?
I have 1.4i.1 on the WAP11 and 2.0 on the Airport Base Station. (which is equivalent to karlbridge ver 3.82)

If I set it back up how I original had it, it seems like everything is working except that packets aren't getting routed correctly.

Also how did you get the gateway set on your WAP11? On mine it appears greyed out.

This is very frustrating :(

Can you explain your IP addressing (like I did in my above email with all addresses) so I can understand how you have it setup? Mine is no longer working... much appreciated!

cypherpunk, Livin ... did you ever get this working? I have a very similar configuration to those that you describe, RG-1000 w/ a DLink DWL-900AP. The DLink is set as an AP client and connected to the Audrey via a crossover. The RG acts as the access point for my laptop and is connected to a Linksys router. I can ping the DLink and the RG from the Laptop, and I can ping the DLink from Audrey, but nothing beyond the DLink. I have everything set to use DHCP, but Audrey "can not get an IP" .. or if I set one in the range of all others (192.168.1.x), Audrey fails getting time from internet (and all other connectivity).

So close ...

I went the Netgear ME102 route for my Audrey. The most difficult part was getting the ME102 to work as an access point client rather then access point server. The trick was using SNMP with a windows computer and a stright cat5 cable for setting up the ME102. In the general tab of the SNMP utility set the 'access point name' and 'ESSID' both to the name of the wireless LAN SSID and the 'channel' to the wireless LAN broadcast channel. In the IP tab of the snmp utility check 'dhcp' and 'wireless'. On the encryption tab set enable if needed and put in the matching key. I used 128 bit with key 1 and checked 'both' for authentication type. On the operational setting tab I checked access point client and put in the MAC address of the wireless LAN server. I did not use MAC address filtering since I set up encryption. Once it was working with a windows I swapped the stright cable for a crossover and the PC for the audrey. It worked for a while, but then the Audrey would freeze while running pjuke after a bit. Who knows. Im about done fussing with her for good. Glad the me102 was only $10 at Frys.
