MY CF seems to have come windows formatted! WTF? Any suggestions on formatting
this CF on Audrey herself? There has got to be a way...

Are you trying to make a backup of your Audrey's image? There's no need to format it, as far as I know. By the way, the correct program to run is devb-cf, not devc-cf. The b stands for block device, and the c stands for character device. For backups, you want the block device.

Anyway, most people (myself included) just archive the Audrey's image to the card straight after unwrapping the card from its packaging. Follow these steps: http://www.audreyhacking.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Content&file=index&menu=1314&page_id=4. In step 8, omit the fs0p2 from the command, as discussed there.

I'm also trying to make a backup image of my Audrey... before I start screwing with it! I just purchased a Sandisk 32MB CF (SDCFB-32-455) last night and I've trying following the instructions in "Making a CF Backup Image" as so rightly pointed out by Sketchy. Alas when I pop the CF card into the Audrey CF port (SanDisk label side to rear, writing label side to front) and then type "devb-cf", I receive no mount message i.e. "CF inserted: xxxxxxxx bytes (xxxxx kB, xx MB)". I'm reluctant to try this on my W2K machine, although I'm thinking this may be the only way to prove I don't have a dud CF card. Any ideas guys?

Using the CF card under Windows won't hurt it at all. I routinely use the same CF card in my Audrey, my digital camera, and in my CF reader attached to Win98, all without problems and without "re-formatting" before using it in Audrey.

I alwaystype "devb-cf" before inserting the CF into Audrey. Then, when the CF is inserted, I get the "CF inserted" message.

Chroma, are you sure it's seated in the slot correctly? Like everything else on the Audrey, the CF slot is a cheapie and sometimes needs some force (but not too much) to click into place.

Just to add a clarification to Sketchy's orignal reply.
Yes, devb-cf does stand for block device but for reasons best know to Audrey's original engineers it actually creates a Character device. The is currently no way of creating a block device for a CF card.
This is not a problem for image backups because both dd and cat write to character devices but it would be nice to create a filesystem on a CF card and for that you need a Block device

Thanks guys, for your comments.

Apologies! I hadn't added the "terminal_button.gif,launch,/nto/photon/bin/pterm" to the SystemPanel.init file.

I get the CF mount fine and the backup image seems to work, although it doesn't take 2-3 mins. I'm assuming this is for a "full" Audrey (memory)? Also what's a quick way to check the image is actually on the CF? Trying to mount cf, doesn't seem to work. df yields more information but how can I be sure a good image is on the CF. Yes, you've guessed it... a Linux newbie (but learning and that's what it's all about!)
