Audrey kills CF cards after image creation
CF card seems to get damaged or is unreadble by any reader after having written an image on it from Audrey

I need some feedback from anyone who's had problems using their CF cards after having written to it from Audrey.

I followed all the instructions highlighted in many of the posts. Here's what I did.

1> bought a 32 MB Sandisk CF and inserted it straight out of the box into my Antec Pshute reader.

2> Through Explorer I could see the CF and it showed that it had close to 32 MB (so the card was good)

3> took the CF out the reader and put it into the Audrey (which was ON at the time)

4> did devb-cf and Audrey showed " CF Card inserted ... etc ..." (so it recognised it)

5> Now, I wanted to backup Audrey (CF image), so I followed the normal steps:
Typed: cd /dev
Typed: cat fs0p0 fs0p1 > /dev/cf

6> After 1 minute or so the prompt came back, so I removed the CF.

7> Inserted CF back into my CF reader, and now WinXP nor Win98 will recognize the card anymore.

I also did these steps with a 128MB card and with a 10MB card (just CAT'ed a small file to it from Audrey) and EVERY time the card becomes totally useless.

So now I'm left with 3 dead cards.

IMPORTANT NOTE : I loaded WinHex and noticed that it thought that my cards had Terabytes !!! worth of space. Obviously the CF parameters have changed somewhat.

Can someone please give me some insight as to why this is happening ... TIA

Your cards are not dead. They are just in a format that WinXX does not understand. If you reformat them under Windows, you should be able to read them again. Of course, your Audrey backup will be gone.

Anyway, you can always check if you created a good backup image by booting from the your flash image (by holding down JUST the "Datebook" icon). Use the 32 MB SanDisk card when you do that. If this works, then you have a good backup CF card.

Thanks for the reply IRQ.

However, it seems that I cannot reformat the CF under windows. It fails to recognise the card(s) all together.

Are there ways to use the Audrey to reformat the CF ?

TIA.

I was able to do a format again with Partition Magic under Windows.

It looks like you are using a USB CF Reader. Some of the USB (actually quite a few) are not recognized by the low-level access programs. You may be better of to go with a $10 PCCard CF reader (e.g. from SanDisk) - assuming you have a laptop handy. This will enable your computer to see the CF cards just like another drive and you should be able to use partition and formatting utilities with the CF card.

Does anyone have a list of OS's that support the above configuration? I know Win98/Laptop/PCCard CF Reader will work fine.

Juke / IRQ,

I took both of your suggestions and tried the following combos :

1> Using Partition magic & trying to read CF cards through USB --- > Failed .. Part. Magic doesn't see the CF

2> Used a PCMCIA card adapter for CF on a win98 laptop --> Failed ..PCMCIA card recognised but not the CF inside it.
I even used PArtition magic on the win 98 laptop with the pcmcia adapter, and it would not see the CFs.

This is really something !!!!

Get This ... When I insert my 32 MB or 128 MB CF cards (with the images on them) into Audrey and try to boot from them (holding down the 'calendar button'on power up), Audrey seems to like them (heavy flicker and all). So there's obviously a valid image on these cards. But why the %#%#$% can't I no longer use my CF cards in any other device ? They're invisible to my Windows boxes.

Guys, please keep coming up with any suggestions .. Perseverance always prevails .. I'm up to it !!!

TIA.

What brand of CF reader are you using? Myself and quite a few others have reported great success with the inexpensive Zio! reader. I frequently swap my CF between Audrey, my digital camera, and Win98 with the Zio reader, all without any problems. Maybe you could check the CD that came with the reader, maybe they provide a tool for formatting the card?

Another utility worth a try is Ranish Partition Manager.
http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/part.zip

Check the partition info with
part -d 1 -p
..
part -d 8 -p

My CF appears as drive # 4 or 5. Hopefully this will work.

If you can find the partition info, then you can start Ranish for that drive with
part -d 5 (5 being the drive number)

and erase any existing partitions and create the new ones readable by WinXX.

If this doesn't work then you'll need to find some low level format utility / CF Reader combo.

the ultimate solution I've found is to use a digital camera to reformat...it workd with the Canon S10 and Optio 330 and probably others (not the Minolta D7 though). These things just CRUSCH whatever's on there, no questions asked...
