CF not recognized by Audrey with devb-cf, no backup possible

Just got a hold of an Audrey and have been able to update it to Final+Shell thanks to all the help found here.
Before going any further, I wanted to back up to a CF and followed the instructions as well. There seem to be various versions on how to do that but in my case, all fail.
The CF is clean formatted (with my digital camera !) but devb-cf doesn't produce "CF Inserted", the prompt just comes back one line below and then the cat/dev/... command results in
"/bin/sh: cannot create /dev/cf: No such file or directory".
Do I need to format the CF in some kind of other file system for QNX, can the Audrey do that for me ?
TIA

I had a physical problem with one of my Audreys - it appears that the slot simply doesn't work (for read or write). I had to update that one manually to get shell as well as any other changes and I cannot image it with one of my standard images.

It would be nice if there were a serial or network alternative for re-imaging for this bad audrey I've got.

damn, just my luck !
Is there a sure way of establishing that the CF slot is dead ?

In the hope of testing it, I tried to use Diskprobe to copy the UpdateWithShellPlus.cf image to a 32meg card (16 meg failed) and tried to boot by holding the Datebook key. It said loading from Flash Card (good !) but then said invalid image.
Can anyone help ? It does seem that the slot isn't dead though !
