How to flash a D-Link DSB-650

I've searched through the boards but can't seem to find definitive info on how to flash a non 3com adapter. i know it involves an app and a bin file but that's all i know. Can someone post the instructions and where to get the files?

ouch !
I'd try installing the qttools drivers when you insert it in XP or 98 and it asks for drivers, hopefully you can read the EEPROM again

OK, got it working. And i did it on XP. here's the deal. I found a different version of qtprog.inf at http://www.ivor.org/audrey/
However, this did not work initially. I had to modify it by combining it with the original qtprog.inf that comes with qttools. after that, i then installed the adapter according to the method described on the boards.
Then i DL'd the linksys.bin file from http://www.linux-hacker.net/downloads/linksys.bin.

Then, instead of using macparse, fire up qtexercz. Go Configure->Comm->select USB. In the right hand pane, select the linksys.bin file that you downloaded above. Then, press Program Small I2C. When done, do a read to verify and voila!

If anyone else is having a similar problem, I will be more than happy to e-mail the qtprog.inf as i do not have any web space right now.

I've tried to do this with the same model D-Link adapter (using the revised procedure for XP). Software states that programming is finished, however, when I plug it into the audrey, it isn't recognized. If I examine it again with the chip tool, it appears to be unchanged.

I had entered the VID and PID strings into the .inf file based on the format that was used for the netgear adapter myself.

Any advice?

Seems like there is a slight problem with my ISP's mail server (bloody fools can't keep the stupid thing up, adelphia is beginning to really piss me off), I'm not terribly keen about giving out my work address, maybe if you are feeling generous, you can contact me through mypcisdead @ one of the more (extremely, unbelievably, DOJably) monopolistic free email or instant messaging providers. Hows that for an alternative to xxx@nospam.xxx?

Thanks for the INF, I tried it out, but no dice. I thought it was kind of interesting that the none of the VID or PIDs appear to match the list that everyone has been using. I'm wondering if my Audrey may have dodgy USB ports, maybe I'll just try to track down a 3Com adapter.

are you able to read the eeprom?

yeah, I can read the eeprom, adapter works with my laptop (running XP), after supposedly flashing dlink driver software still works (I don't know if this would matter or not, I imagine that the driver is irrelevant, since the chips are the same). Luckily, my wife has a Visor with a USB cradle, so I used it to check the USB ports on Audrey, I can sync from either with no problem, so the ports are good.

add the vid & pid from of the adapter to the qtprog.inf. Remove the existing driver and when windows attempts to re-install then point to the qttools directory.

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. I've tried a couple different versions of the .INF (mine, yours, yours modified with my string), I'm able to load the qtprog.sys driver with no problem, and read my eeprom, so it appears to be working, but for some reason the BIN file doesn't seem to be reprogramming Audrey. Maybe my Audrey just doesn't wuv me, *sniff*.

Well, I successfully updated a DSB-650, but only after screwing it up so bad it stopped responding at all to anything. Fortunately, there were instructions posted on how to do a complete reset on the eeprom, and it worked for me. There are instructions here in an earlier thread, but I think the instructions are better here http://www.audreyhacking.com/forum/read.php?f=2&i=1457&t=1457 . You'll have to open up the adaptor to do this, but it really isn't all that hard and hopefully it will get you going again. BTW, the instructions are for an EA101, but the DSB-650 uses the same chips and it works.

I'm at a point where I'm tempted to try clearing the eeprom and then writing the modified bin file to it. I'm slightly hesitant, because other than not working with the Audrey, my adapter is doing quite well.

Nev, is your d-link the translucent looking one or the white one with the orange power/link light and the green tx/rx light?

I just picked on up today and even though it is clearly marked dsb-650 it is really a Aten UC10T so I needed to use PID 0557 VID 2002 rather than the others that people are posting.. after that I was able to install the driver and update the VID PID to look like 3com's with no problem.. didn't touch the bin.

Anyone know if this procedure is possible on keyboards? I know this sounds dumb, but I want to use my Dell PS2 keyboard in a USB switch that I have using a PS2 -> USB converter that came with my Microsoft keyboard, but computers don't seem to like anything on that adapter except for the Microsoft Keyboard. I'm thinking that I can reprogram the keyboard to think that it is a usb compatible keyboard and then it should work, unless someone else has another idea for me.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Booya,

I've got the translucent one. When did you have problems and realize that you needed to change VID/PID? I had no problems getting the qtprog.sys driver to install (thats the only thing that I see the qtprog.inf being for) and I can read the eeprom with no trouble, I just can't write to the darn thing.

nevarre,

I had to change the VID and PID because the windows 98 box wouldn't let me install the driver until the qtprog.inf file had a line with a matching VID and PID for my usb adapter. It appears that you are past that part, so my post doesn't apply. Do you get an error when writing to eeprom? I noticed that all mine does is pause for a few seconds then says; Done. Then a read shows that the changes were made. I used the Update method and the Write eeprom method and they both seemed to work. After I updated the first time (changed adapter to look like 3com) I had to add the 3com VID and PID line to the qtprog.inf in order to change the settings a second time and write to eeprom. The second change I did was just a change of the manufacturer and product lines.

My situation is a little bit different since I'm using Windows XP, and the newer version of QTexercz , it appears to work but when I attach it to the Audrey, no dice. I guess I'm going to have to haul the Windows 98 machine out of the basement and see if I have any luck there.

Ok, I have had success with netgear and otehrs, but was trying like Hades to get my translucent D-link to work. FINALLY, i popped open the case and voila... PEGASUS!
No kawasaki chipset in there, so no go for me. The box clearly said D-Link DSB-650, as did the adapter. Obviously there are different chipsets within the same cases, so make sure yours is not PEGASUS inside before pulling your hair out!

And we have a winner in the guess why I can't flash my Ethernet adapter! The silly thing has a Pegasus chipset! At least I don't have to feel to bad, I already had it before I got the Audrey.

Anyone want to lay odds that the Netgear adapter I just ordered works perfectly well in most situations, but instead of the kawasaki chips, it has a refurb proc from a Vic20 or something?

(Long time listner, first time caller)

Ugh... I just spent 2 hours trying to get a translucent DSB-650 to work. Luckily I can return them. I got my hopes up when I saw the contents of the floppy. Even had an INF file in it with the 2001/4000 VID/PID combo. Unfortunately, mine is the 2001/ABC1 VID/PID, so it's pretty safe to say that it's not a Kawasaki.

And the damned things were on sale at Circuit City for $15 apiece!!!!! I was SOOOO stoked that I bought 3 of them!

Looks like I'm going to have to go mail-order an EA101, dammit!

I have the translucent DSB-650 with the codes 2001/ABC1 in the .inf file on the driver disk. So should I bother trying to open it up, or is it definitely a Pegaus?
:(

and from the posts above, is it true that some of /the translucent ones are actually kawasaki?

The floppy should have both the 2001/ABC1 and the original KLSI one (2001/4000?)

Depending on which one your system actually loads (see if it copies over USB10T2.SYS or the DSB650.SYS (I may be slightly off on names, in a bit of a hurry.)

If it's the DSB650, I believe that's the pegasus. (at least thats what mine seems to be.) The PID 4000/USB*.SYS is the KLSI, aparently.

Good luck,

Fu
