Learning remote for phjuke?
Need a learning remote for long-range use

I really love phjuke, and I am looking for a learning remote to use with the hotkeys. I just bough an inexpensive Zenith learning remote. It did successfully learn the keyboard shortcuts, but it has no better range than the original keyboard! After 2 or 3 feet or so, it stops working. Has anyone had better luck with other remotes?

Sony has a couple of excellent learning remotes with many cool features at reasonable prices. Good range too.

I have this one: http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/home/accessories/universalremote/rm-vl900.shtml
Around $60.00

Also try: http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/home/accessories/universalremote/rm-vl700_specs.shtml
Around $40.00

Includes Macro keys that can perform up to 16 steps each and you can use it to control your whole AV system.

I heard one of the problems with the Audrey is the IR sensor points down inside the housing in the unit. Some people have achieved better remote connections my GIGERLY nudging the sensor to point forward.

The problem is it can be easy to break the sensor if you are not careful. So I would take this advice with a grain of salt.

A well placed mirror outside the case works too...

OK, thanks for the suggestions. I did open her up and bend the IR sensor up, and the range definately did increase, but only to about 10 feet or so, not quite enough to be really useful. davec, I think I'll try a Sony remote as you suggested. Have you actually tried yours with Audrey?

koreth also suggested that I could use the network remote commands along with the Girder PC control program he mentions on his site. Since my PC has an IR keyboard, and since the keyboard reciever is near the stereo, this could be a workable solution. I can tell from the command line output I have the TCP plugin set up and connecting to PhJuke, but it's not quite working. I suspect it's because I'm not sending the correct escape sequences for carriage return or newline. Anyone know how to do this in Girder? Thanks.

I also have the Sony RM-VL900 but I have not been successful on getting it to learn Phjuke's keyboard shortcuts (http://www.midwinter.com/audrey/phjuke/docs-keyboard.html). I tried assigning the next ("n"), play ("P") and previous ("b") keys to the forward, play and rewind buttons for the MD (Minidisk) component and it never registered the codes.

Have you been able to get it to work? Are you using the remote macros or assigning it to a device that you are not using (i.e. the Minidisk in my case)?

Thanks.

Also, reading on the Sony site, it indicates that the VL700 learning capabilities:
"Learning Function allows for programming from other remote controls and other infrared remote signals to operate air conditioners, lights, other non-A/V equipment"

While for the VL900 (the one that I have!) it only mentions learning capabilities for other A/V equipment... no mention of non-A/V equipment! I have had no problem getting it to learn from other A/V remotes, but no sucess with the Audrey keyboard.

Any real life experiences on that?

I recently got a Sony touch-screen learning remote (don't remember the model number). It did successfully learn from Audrey's keyboard, but the range is still no better, maybe 8-10 feet. I do remember that it didn't want to learn the key codes at first, but I separated the kb and remote by about a foot and then it was successful.
