Is this a dead Audrey? or can she be saved!

I have been lurking since December, and wish to thank you all for answering my questions before I even had them :)

But now I have a question (problem) I haven't seen addressed yet.

After plugging in Audrey, I hear a clicking noise, green light blinks in sync with noise. Then both fade away, as if power was slowly being removed. LCD backlight is lit and stays lit, but nothing happens, other than the click & blink! Will not boot from CF. Have tried different power supplies.

I figured the first one to do it was, well, a dead audrey. But now I have six (6) of them that do the same thing. So I figure I can't be the only one who has an Audrey affected this way, and maybe somebody has an answer.

Any ideas?

I have one like that too, luckily my other two are fine. As soon as I can find a torx skinny enough to get at the screws I'm gonna take it apart to see what's going on inside...

I ground down a 3" philips head screw (deck screw) into the shape of a flat screwdriver (very small) that fit in the torx screw. Using a philips head screw driver on the (ground) screw, I was able to remove the torx screw pretty easily. Once inside however, I haven't a clue what to look for. :)

You have 6 like this??? This has got to be more than coincidence, since there are lots of folks here that have multiple Audreys (including me) and don't have this problem. You have to assume that there is something in the environment, or something that you have run, or some kind of common element to these 6 that caused the failure. Perhaps a lightning strike got to the power supply or the modem, or maybe flashed from a bad image (perhaps one with a corrupt boot loader), or something like that. Whatever it is, I don't think you can assume its a flaw in the Audrey or everybody would be reporting the problem. I would try to figure out what the six Audreys all had in common. Do you have more? If you do, I wouldn't even turn them on again until you have some idea about what happened. At the very least I'de get a new known good image and flash your remaining Audreys. And if they won't flash, I'm not sure if they can be fixed.

I have a total of 14. Of the six that are affected, 5 came from TD (parts only audrey) and one I got off of ebay. The other nine work fine.

UPDATE

I took another one apart. Two out of six non-working Audreys are now naked. Upon undressing Audrey 2, bits of plastic parts started falling out. The two mounts that hold the tube shape thing that the speaker wires wrap around were broken to bits. Apparently, Audrey 2 was dropped on her head at some point. Continuing my inspection (as I posted earlier, I don't know what I'm looking for...but now she's naked, I gotta look!) I find every single one of the pins in the cf socket bent in all directions. Audrey 2 seems to have been really abused. Could it be this simple. Back to Audrey 1 to check the cf pins. Darn, all standing straight. The pins in Audreys 3-6 are also straight. :(

For now, back to Audrey 2... with tools in hand, and a magnifying glass, I painstakingly straightened each pin. Before getting her dressed, I decided to try and flash her. So I started to unbutton my...opps sorry, wrong story! ;)

I put the cf card in, very carefully, held the two buttons down, (wasn't easy mind you, all parts are loose, and those words printed right on the circuit board "Danger High Voltage"), and plugged her in. Success! Audrey 2 is alive!

So now I'm down to 5 non working Audreys...time to undress the next one...

In the meantime, I'm still open to suggestions as to what to look for while she's naked!

Not 14, 15! That was to early in the morning to be doing math!

Please note also, when I said 5 Audreys came from TD, I was not trashing them (I read the other thread). I knew full and well "I" was the one taking the risk, as it was fully disclosed what was being sold.

One of my parts only Audreys didn't work and had a somewhat similar issue. I flashed her properly, monitoring it via null modem cable. She makes the right noises on startup and the backlight goes on, but I get nada from the LCD itself. I opened her up and reseated connectors, but could find nothing that was obviously out of whack (it would have to be obvious since I have no idea what I'm looking for). If you get your LCD working, I'm interested to know how...

Went back to Audrey 1. Since Audrey 2 is now working, I started swapping parts with Audrey 1. Swapped daughter board first (Audrey 1 not working, Audrey 2 working) Problem not with daughter board. Put parts back to their rightfull owner. Next, swap LCD's (Audrey 1 working, Audrey 2 not working). Conclusion: Problem exsist on main board. Guess this one is DOA. On to Audrey 3.
