Need feedback to update "Another QNX Image"
Another QNX Image

Don't expect anything very soon, but I need feedback before I make an update for this image.
On my Audrey to do list I mention a couple of things myself: http://www.prins.net/audrey/work.html
I would like to hear from you if you use Playlist Maker. Is that enough for most in combination with the playlist facility in MediaPlayer or is PhJuke a better option?
Are other ideas floating around for an update? Please be realistic and be aware that space is limited in Audrey, but let me know. Which software isn't needed at all in your opinion and can go.
Does anyone succeeded in cleaning up the image from unused Kojak apps. without adverse effects, especially ugly noises when you use Audrey? I would like to know what you did and implement it.
Another idea is to add the software that can run an external modem. I personally know several people that have those annoying connect problems and some still cannot connect at all with the built in modem. If you also have no cable or DSL you're stuck with Audrey.
My greatest wish is to implement the Disk on a Keychain by M-Systems. Currently 8 megs will cost you $30, not bad. It will solve all space problems and will guarantee Audrey will be of use for years to come. While QNX has a Disk on a Chip driver available, Linux has the Keychain driver already. Who can port this driver to QNX? I have no idea, but it could be easy.
Last but not least I want to thank the hundreds of users of this image. I hope you enjoy using it like I do and can provide me with the feedback to make it even better.

After getting Ph Juke running i think that it's a much better option then PhPlay.
I would play with the config files a bit and adjust the colors and fonts as i don't think they are optimal.

I would personaly leve the extrnal modem option out sounds like more trouble then it's worth and adding the extra friles for the 5 out of 1000 uses dosen't maoe too much sence to me.

I consider myself on the disk on Key project. I'm looking into converting the linux driver to QNX. Ihave some outside help but i also encurage any one else who has the know how to look into this.

I would also ass the extra drivers to use the Pegasus NICs. even though connections are slow i think the need for more usb options is there. just warn that mp3 playback will be choppy. it dosen't efect the audrey if you use the 3com adapter so it won't harm anything just expand options.

If you like feel free to distribute my edited images for the audrey. i think it clean the look of your image up and over all makes using it more atractive.

I love the Image Jukebox. It fills most all of my needs. But I'd be happy if someone could figure out how to use a USB CF reader and CF as as external storage. I know it must be possible. Can QNX do this? Any help guys would be great thanks.

Not many drivers exist for QNX. USB support was only just made avaialbe in QNX 6.0 and 6.1 added support for more devices but. At this time QNX even has problems with USB mice with wheels. I would recomnd starting here:

http://qdn.qnx.com/support/hardware/platform/index.html

You will find a list of all natavle supported hardware. you can install QNX 6.1 to a system and then port over the drivers and librays needed to run each. it's not to hard once you locate the drive becasue it will tell you what LIBS is needs to run when you do so.

My next stop would be to this place:

http://www.nexwarecorp.com/

Nextware corp developed the interface for the audrey and has deved other apliance that use QNX. They offer a lot of sofware (much of it ported from linux) and also mention that they have drivers. and other things. watch the repository for updates.

Really nice implementation, jukebox!
My vote for Numero Uno on the wishlist is support for USB flash devices like the M-Disk disk-on-key.

Also, maybe this is just me not understanding how the QNX image hangs together with the kojak apps, but the Mail applet doesn't integrate well with QNX. In particular, can't seem to get Mail off of the screen easily. Usually have to start Mail, start Voyager, then go back to Mail to read something. Kinda funky, unless I'm missing something....

I'm a new Audrey user (had one just 2+ days) so I've just begun (e.g., networking with my NT Workstation, FTPing images to the NT, tweaking color, remote on/off, etc). However, eventually I want to scrap the Audrey interface ad go with a more serviceable GUI, one that will support home automation apps. Yours looks very slick and promising.

How easy it it to replace a menu item (e.g., sound recording, which I'm not interested in) with a Home Automation item (e.g., MisterHome; see: http://misterhouse.sourceforge.net/faq_ia.html)?

Is that something that can be retrofitted to your image once it's installed? E.g., what would need to be changed, removed, and replaced with what?

BTW, when I access http://www.prins.net/audrey/snapshot.html on my Audrey, all images beginning with the Voyager image are not displayed (Audrey displays an 'x' button, instead). Is my guess correct that it's because Audrey's low on memory using the current Audrey image?

About the mail etc. In the original Audrey Browser was running always in the background. When you open mail you read your mail in your web browser, which is now voyager.
The events you describe as necessary to operate mail can be avoided by having voyager running minimized before you open mail and leave voyager running minimized after you close mail with the DateBook button for the next time you open mail.

To replace menu items in shelf you have to use Shelf Cfg that can be found in the window manager menu by pressing Alt(paste)-Enter. You can find there which executables are used for each shelf menu item. You can add/remove items or easier probably change them as needed. You can delete the executables you don't want to use anymore to save space. They are either in /nto/bin or /nto/photon/bin. New programs can be ftp'd in or copied from a share and used in the menu for new items. (Don't forget to chmod +x and cmp any new executables).
If you have more questions about this procedure try a search on this BBS with the necessary keywords.

About voyager memory. I have set the picture cache I believe on 400k. For most pages that's more than enough to see all pictures. To be quit honest, I don't understand why this isn't working properly on my own web pages while it works well with so many others.
If you plan to work with a share in Audrey from your PC you could change the settings in voyager and move the cache to this share in the (much bigger) size you want.

jukebox,

very nice image...I can't wait to tailor it for HA use with Homevision :)

Approaching this as strictly a lazy, uninformed user, who hasn't the courage nor the time to apply the various hacks (none of which is true, only my sig other would rather it be the case, since she is tired of sharing time with Audrey. She'd rather I'd play with her buttons than Audrey's...go figure ;) )

So, while this image is great and geared for the technophiles, from a WAF it's missing:

Datebook. The datebook was the first app that turned the Audrey from "another one of your electro-gizmo's" to an acceptable tool in the household. (It also permitted me to buy another one ;) )

Channel Buttons. Even though it was slow....still, tho, another good WAF, esp if there was a standard palette of channel icons (Yahoo, Ebay, a News Site, MSN, TV Listings, Weather, Recipes Online, ESPN, etc.)

Still, a great image, and far beyond where I would have ended up from scratch. My hat's off to ya!

In the beginning we were happy to be able to set Audrey's Browser on 12 bit colors, but we noticed decreased performance with loading images.
Then voyager came, but I doubt if voyager does much better on 12 bit color. My experience is that voyager skips pictures on pages with a lot of them too.
I spend a couple of hours trying to increase the performance of voyager. I found out voyager doesn't use the full size of it's cache, no matter how big or small you make it. By making the cache bigger performance increases somewhat, but performance really increases when you set voyager on 8 bit color (256 colors), regardless of the cache size.
These browsers work together with voyager.server, a stripped down version of the RTP and I believe the performance problem is created there. The real voyager.server is about 4 times bigger.
Currently if I set the cache to 5mg and have voyager run in 8 bit colors it performs very well and uses about half a meg of the cache. If I set the colors to 12 bit performance in loading pictures decreases substantially, while a smaller part of the cache is used.
Any ideas floating around about this problem? Please let me know.

don't foget that a lot of the missed images and decorations are becasue the audrey as no CSS support. My web page for example ( http://www.otakupc.com ) would work just fine if i hard coded all the images into the HTML.

Interesting, I have been using voyager exclusively for months now without problems. I even deleted the original Browser executable. I haven't seen the skipped images that you report, even when a page contains lots of images, and the performance is fine (not as fast as IE on my desktop of course, but quite acceptable). Sorry, I'm at work and not in front of my Audrey, but I know that I have 12-bit color enabled, and I am using a Windows network share for my cache. When I get home I'll post the details of my configuration, but I'm sure I'm not doing anything all that unusual.

Jukebox I just installed you image on one of my Audries and I love it! Replacing Phplay with PhJuke will be one big help (I did that on my Audrey). One question about your image.... how do I bring up datebook and can I still sync with a Palm (the ortion seems to be gone from the action pallet).

Thansk for all the great work for this community!

Please try this link and let me know how it works on your Audrey.
http://www.prins.net/audrey/snapshot.html
Then we look at the same page to compare performance.

jbhasin,
I wouldn't replace mediaplayer. You'll need that one for streaming mp3 and other audio files from the web. Just add PhJuke on the share with your mp3 files and you'll have it all. PhJuke cannot do streaming from the web.
About the Datebook and Palm.. it's gone in this image. Also the Addresbook and Channels are gone. I needed their space to bring in all the other stuff.

Jukebox,
Have you set BROWSER_EnableDiskCache == 1 ? I noticed you were talking about cache and I think that this value by default is set to 0 and when I browse and look in the /tmp dir I see nothing that resembles cache files but when I set it to 1 I see lots of files in the /tmp directory. Am I correct in the assumption that there is no disk cache with BROWSER_EnableDiskCache set to 0? Is it set to 0 by default or am I tripping?

booya,
I'm using voyager that has it's own settings dialog and I have cache enabled.
I think you're right with when you use Browser and I don't believe you're tripping.

If you use my image and don't like Browser and Voyager starting up automatic at boot time, you can edit /config/rm-apps and delete the b in the beginning of the lines with Browser and mail.
The buttons will still work and you remain in full control of these 2 apps and Audrey boots faster.

bazabba,
No, eveything is included to setup your own mounts in the way you want.
Included are two nfs mount scripts in /nto/bin, linux.sh and os2.sh, that you can modify as you like. You''l find them both too in wm.menu.
Mount at boot is easy to setup by editing /kojak/go

How do i get rid of that notification tab at the bottom of the screen?

Two old Kojak apps run in the shelf tray at the bottom of the screen, Backdrop and Notification. I believe they are needed and you can't get rid of them.
With Neutrino Sin! you can slay Notification and see what happens. Don't do that with Backdrop!

I took out al XML related scripts from /kojak/CGI. Are they needed for anything to give more functionality to Audrey in this image? I thought they were needed by the old Browser only, but maybe I'm wrong...
