Large-Scale storage
CompactFlash TrueATA mode

Essentially, I'm interested in using my Audrey as a programmable MP3 player to install in my car. The most basic problem is, of course, where to store all that music. After a *wee* bit of research, I discovered that CompactFlash cards are required to support 3 transfer modes, one of which is TrueATA, which allows nearly direct wiring of CompactFlash cards into a IDE/ATA bus. Also, the Geode chipset supports 2 standard IDE channels. My thought is that the CompactFlash port is accessed via the integrated drive controller. If this is the case, how possible does everyone think hooking a traditional hard drive to the audrey via something like this: http://www.advantech.com/epc/newsletter/v34-10-15_00/4IDEsup.htm Anyone tried this? Or gaping holes in my logic?

As far as is know now, it'snot possible. the CF slot on the audrey is atypical as in it can only read one size of CF card and it can not be used as a mountable drive of any type.

To date the best hope is to use the USB slot with some kind of usb storage device. The disk on Key has been considerd as it has linux drived that can possible be ported to QNX.

Back in October of 2001 I did some research on the possibility of using an EIDE hard drive with the Audrey. I posted the information but never followed up to determine if somebody had investigated this concept more in-depth.

Thanks!

Personally, I think it might be more useful or easier to get USB drivers to handle external USB hard drives, these seem to be growing in availability, and would be accessible to more users who wouldn't have to crack the case.

I've examined this option too - The decision is whether it is easier to make drivers for a USB enclosure or some kind of twisted hardware hack - or if someone can mount that compact flash port, it wouldn't require opening either, there is an access panel on the side of the audrey for it. If anyone knows of a USB enclosure manuacturer that is open about their communication protocol, I'm game to write or port a QNX driver for it. Seems like QNX provides plenty of tools for driver authoring

Try Addonics - they must be pretty standardized just like those USB disk-on-keys which are recognized by existing Windows drivers - their PC Card cable to the same enclosure works in an iPaq handheld with just a fixed version of the ATA driver for CE - see the Storage brick at http://www.tjotala.com/hardware/storagebrick/default.htm. I'm waiting on a similar (3.5") enclosure to use as MP3 storage for my car and iPaq. 75GB (and up) on the road...
