Word processing on the Audrey?

Is anyone using their Audrey to do real word processing? I'm looking for a solution for a graduate student from abroad who's currently going to his local library to use a computer. I have an old PC, but I'd have to purchase a monitor, an OS (probably some version of MS Windows) and a printer to make it useful. If I could set up an Audrey to do this, I'd only have to pay for an Audrey and a printer, which would be a whole lot cheaper. (BTW, in case you're going to suggest some non-Windows OS, I'm not interested in having to support this system much beyond setting it up initially, which is one reason why the Audrey seems attractive in this case.)

So, is anyone doing this (i.e., more than just simple text editing)? I don't think he needs anything real complex, but something that handles text formatting, page margins, etc. would be useful. If so, how do you compare this experience to using a PC to do the same work? What application do you use? What is your experiences with using a printer directly connected to the Audrey? Are there any other questions I should be asking?

TIA.

The "Another QNX" Image has a basic word pad and network printer support. Not a lot of printers are supported so it can be rather difficult to find one that is compatible. Check these boards as there are a few subjects that cover this.

The next problem is screen space. The sub 8" display is ad best cramped and the keyboard can aggravatingly flaky (and small) For any amount of comfort at the very least get a full sized USB keyboard for it. Not much can bee done about the screen’s small size.

Another problem would be saving any data that you write. You would need a system with a networked drive to store the documents.

I have seen a program called Abiword (I think) for QNX, but I haven't used it and don't know if it would run on Audrey. In any case, I don't think Audrey is suitable for word processing for the reasons already cited. If you look around, you can get used PCs (even old used laptops, great for students) that are fine for word processing for around $200, which is about what you would have paid anyway by the time you get Audrey all set up, and would be much more comfortable and useful. You can also get brand new printers for under $50. As for support, the learning curve for getting Audrey set up to be useful for something like this is probably much higher for a new user than setting up a Windows box, especially if you are already familiar with Windows.

If any computer shows come to you area, check them out. Since you say you already have a PC, you should be able to get a used monitor, and probably a new printer for less than the price of an Audrey. Also check out sites like pcliquidators.com, compgeeks.com, and overstock.com for deals on used and "legacy" components. And with all the new recent Windows versions out, you can probably find someone willing to give you their old licensed copy of Win95 or Win98.

Thanks for your responses. My (non-techie) wife also pointed out the problem with saving data, which I hadn't thought of prior to posting my questions. My goal is to make this as simple as possible, and not having adequate onboard or removable storage would complicate things. I also don't think I'd want to attempt to type a 50 page paper on Audrey's keyboard (although it's nice enough for its intended purpose). I agree about the limitations of the display; if I could redesign one thing about the Audrey, it would probably be to give it a larger & higher resolution screen,

I suspect that the used monitor/used OS route is best in this case.

You might look at a hacked i-opener. Once a hard drive is added, it can operate Windows and any Windows based applications. The footprint is still very small and you can print to any printer that has Windows drivers.

Just a thought,
Creech.
