Can anyone give me a quick lesson on what "Channels" on the Audrey are and what they were used for?

davistw1,

Please do a search. This will be answered with a great abundance of threads from which you may choose and will answer your question much more throughly than a single reply of "They are URL's you access with the channel knob."

Thanks, I found it. What I was hopeing for was a laymans view of what the channnels did in the original Audrey. I found a lot of info on how to make them do what I want but what were they there for in the first place?

The original use of the channels was to provide information that was pre-sized to Audrey's screen, that would download to the machine in the middle of the night, providing fresh information along with your morning coffee. You would be spared the time needed to download a page, and this was thought to provide extra utility to an Audrey, so 3Com solicited channel content providers. These providers paid for the right to be on the Audrey, so you could only select from a 3Com-predetermined list of them, and could not add any of your own choosing. The continual payment for the channels was intended to supply 3Com with an ongoing cash flow from the Audrey, but when the advertising market fell flat, so did this part of the financial scheme.

About all you can do now is to reprogram them with other URL's, but that's the very same thing that a favorites or bookmark list can do. The functionality of having pre-downloaded channelized information is lost. Too bad someone didn't figure out a way to restore that, but I believe the last 3Com-sent update turned off the channel functions completely, since they were not being supported any more.

I have removed most of the apps associated with the channels from the Audrey except for the Filmstrip app (only app you need for static Channels BTW) and have found a couple useful url's and created a couple web pages that my wife and I use to provide more functionality to our Audrey.

Most of the mods I have done have been done with my wife in mind since I want her to use Audrey as well.

I fixed up a nice .countertop page that has easy to use links for starting phjuke, shell and an easy button for rebooting the Audrey.

I have also created a webpage that has a form frontend that allows us to keep a Grocery List on the Audrey and
sync it to our Palms before we go shopping. The syncing is not done from the Audrey unfortunatly since I use hsconvert (win32 app) to create a .pdb for HandyShopper. Basically I just host a page on my linux box and it takes inputs and creates a .CSV file that hsconvert uses to create the HandyShopper database.

I have been using mobile webpages (pages designed for pocketPC's and Cell phones) as channels as well, since they are designed for smaller resolution devices and fit on Audreys small screen.

examples of mobile webpages can be found at..
http://www.nextel.com/wireless/web/wireless.shtml

one of my favorite URL's that works well as a channel is http://yp.mapquest.com
Its a yellow pages guide.

Cool, Do you have the list of what you removed to get rid of everything except the Filmstrip app? Or can you point me to the list?

Could I use a .countertop to fire off a page that has all of the programs I use such as shell, ped, phjuke, etc? My Audrey options is getting full and messy...

The tip on mobile web pages is cool, Looks much cleaner on the screen..
Now all I have to do is get them in a channel...

Thanks..

I've set up some simple channels using the instructions on this list but find
that i often get lockups when using them. Is this a known problem? Is there a
work around.

Fugowie,
Yes, I to have problems with lockups when trying to do to much surfing in a channel.. after the lockup the browser stops working as well. I think it has to do with popup windows, as I can replicate the problem everytime and noticed when I visit the offending pages with my windows machine I get popups at the times when the Channels lock up. When I use the browser to surf the same page I do not have the same problem. I have been trying to find nice infomitive pages that load fullscreen on Audreys screen and do not lockup the channels..

Oh and if you get a lockup on a channel you can fix it by doing a "ps" in shell
and look for "voyager.server -r -u Mozilla/4.7 (Win98; Audrey)"
use kill to kill the voyager.server process and it will restart itself, and channels and browser will work again.

example..
# ps
606242 122895 1 voyager.server -r -u Mozilla/4.7 (Win98; Audrey)

# kill 606242
