Audrey power supply connector right adapter?

Has anyone found a right angle adapter for the power supply connector? I would like to find a good way to eliminate the power cord from sticking out the side of Audrey and reduce the strain on the fragile power connector. Can't seem to find the right 8 pin circular DIN combination.

BTW: The Audrey power supply was made by ANAM in Korea http://www.anamic.co.kr/ Click on "SMPS /Standard Items" then select "AP1521-US" from the drop down menu. Might be a good lead to find replacement PS's.

This is a good idea, and while I couldn't find any right angle adapters, you could go through the effort of making one yourself. There are sites out there with right angle mini DIN's and plenty of PCB mount mini din connectors. You could make a dongle that hangs from Audrey, or use double sided tape/velcro to attach it.

If you come across any right angle adapters afterall, please post it. Hopefully the pins on that will be tougher than the pins on the power adapter.

Anybody know what the pin outs are for the mini din power connector?
Which ones are 3.3v, 5V, and ground?
I got an Audrey without a power supply at all.
I'm going to have to make one.

on a side note, i'd like to send power and ethernet to the audrey over a single ethernet cable, splicing at the ends to go the appropriate places... possible?

Power over Ethernet should be no problem with Audrey. POE relies on pins 4,5,7,8 since ethernet doesn't use those pins. The problem might be that Audrey requires 3.3 and 5 volts, meaning that you'd have to send 3 volts down one pin and 5 down another. Normally, POE do-it-yourselfer's (and real manufacturers for that matter) wire 4-5 together as a pair (as either + or -) and 7-8 as the opposite polarity pair. This parallel wiring gives less voltage drop over a given distance (which is often needed if wiring longer runs). I'd suspect that as long as your run of cat5 is less than 100 ft or so, you can probably pull it off.

Otherwise, you can use a different power supply than the one provided, and convert to 3.3 and 5 volts on the Audrey side of the connection. This would enable longer runs, but would require a bit more electrical expertise, of course.

Flipp makes a good point. Cat5 cable can have a max resistance of 0.094 Ohms/meter. I don't know how much current the Audrey pulls but you probably don't want to drop more than 0.25 Volts (5V - 5%) assuming you have a supply that actually puts out 5V. Say the Audrey draws 0.75 Amps on 5 volts. For a 10 meter cable the drop would be 0.75 x 0.094 x 10 x 2 = 1.41V. This probably would not work. Note it's "x 2" because you have voltage drop on the supply line and the return line.

So I'd check the current draw for the 5V and 3.3V supply to see if this is practical. You might also want to double check the 0.094 Ohms/meter. That's the max Belden lists for Cat 5.

I would advise trying the CAT5 power feed first with the same length of cable just rolled up on the floor - before making any irreversible and serious wiring. The 3.3 and 5V are regulated power with very low ripple and noise, this is what feeding the 200MHz digital circuitry in Audrey. There is no other active regulator in between (most of) the digital circuits, just couple capacitors. Long cable run can increase the impedance and add noise, not to mention .5V drop that makes everything out of spec. If Audrey runs on the CAT5 wire of the desired length for couple days with no lockup, it would do it - but I doubt more then 6 feet works.

Jameco has an Apple printer cable(part no. 180591) which has an right angle 8-pin miniDIN male to DB25 male. Two foot length and only $1.39 or 12.50 for 10
