I try to get rid of that setting Time & Date from the internet at boot. It's no problem to do so, but now what. Is there an utility like rdate or other available for QNX?
I have seen rdate in config/init files in the RTP but always commented out with #. I've looked everywhere but cannot find a replacement. Who can help?

What you need is an NTP (network Time Protocol) client. I'm not sure what's available for QNX, but a quick search on deja.com in comp.os.qnx turned up a lot of hits, and at first glance it looks like there are some clients available. Hope thats enough to get you started.

I had found already rtc and date. These utilities allow you to set or change the hardware clock. What I look for is a utility that gets date & time from a timeserver on the internet like rdate in Linux and other platforms. I still don't know where to find one.

Sorry jukebox, maybe I wasn't too clear. The protocol for getting the time and date from the internet is NTP. rdate is an example of an NTP client. If you look in ftp://ftp.qnx.com/usr/free/qnx4/tcpip/utils/ you will see 2 files that may be useful, qnx-ntp.tgz, and rdate.gz. These are apparently NTP clients for QNX4, but I don't know what would be involved in running them on QNX6. It looks like rdate.gz is just a binary, but qnx-ntp.tgz contains source. Maybe it will compile under QNX6 without too much trouble. Also if you search on deja.com for "QNX NTP" you will find a lot of threads from other people looking for NTP clients, but I din't go through them to see what was available. Good luck.

Hey Jukebox, check out http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&threadm=Voyager.010511134116.1948C%40schoenbrun.com&rnum=12&prev=/groups%3Fq%3Drdate%2Bqnx%26hl%3Den%26start%3D10%26sa%3DN . There is a link there to ftp://schoenbrun.com/pub/ntpdate_nto.pax.F , which still works. Once you get that file, the thread says you can extract the binary with "melt <ntpdate.pax.F | pax -rv". Check out the thread for more details. I'm at work and can't really check it out.

Thanks! The last one ntpdate does work like a charm. The negative is it's size, over 400k while setitime is only 7k.. That's a problem in Audrey.
rdate is a small utility, only 24k, but it gives a lot of warnings and doesn't do anyhting else.
And there was another one that needs to be patched and compiled, but that's beyond my scope.
I still have my hopes up for something smaller than ntpdate

Hi,

After I took my audrey apart, I'm an soft. engineer I can't help it, I notice that there is a place on the motherboard for a battery backup. Has anyone tried to connect a battery backup onto the motherboard? Does it work? It should.

qnx-ntp.tgz mentioned here needs the patch and compile. It's supposed to have a small footprint, which sounds great.
To build everything, do something like the following:

1) zcat qnx-ntpv1.tar | tar -xvof -
2) mkdir ntp
3) cd ntp
4) tar -xvof ../ntp.tar
5) patch -p <../qnx-ntp.patch

5) Possibly edit the Makefile to change compile options or
builtin features.

6) make

Who is willing to do this in 6.0?
Thanks!

About the battery, that's interesting. A low voltage cap with a large capacity could probably do the trick too and keep the clock running for a while. That should stop the need to update time for most of us.While it's open you may try it.. at your own risk..
