rechargable battery pack for Audrey

Just wondered if anyone built a rechargable battery pack for the Audrey?
Since it is only 3.3 & 5v @ 1.5A it seems like we might be able to use some older laptop batteries or something.

Anyone have any experience with batteries?

The challenge is the DC/DC step down converter. Maxim has great chips, even sends free samples. Just add some inductor and power FET and you are ready to go. Maybe some power supply guru is reading and can advise. Sure there are ready made 18V -> 3.3/5V converters, but between $50-$100.

It seems Maxim-IC has a free evaluation board for a 3.3/5V notebook power supply chipset. I ordered one and going to hook it up to a Dell lithium battery pack. I will kep you posted.

Which Maxim-IC eval board did you order? You have to be careful that the V-I charging curve matches the spec for the L-Ion Battery, and that you have overcharging / temperature monitoring. Thats two or three ICs. I was thinking of doing the same thing, but now I think I might buy an external laptop charger /battery combo off of ebay and see if the internal parts could be retrofitted. I thought it might save some of the engineering.

I expected the eval board, but got only the chip from Maxim (http://dbserv.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm?qv_pk=1187) Well, I should have known they won't give the board for free. Now I need to add 2 FETs, 1 shottky diode, 2 10uH inductors and some other small stuff. The DELL battery pack I have already has the factory charger, so there's no problem with charging them up.

Anybody know what the pin outs are for the Mini din power connector?
Which one is 3.3V, 5V, and Ground?

I charged up the Dell battery pack, but it needs some trick to get the 14.4V voltage out on the two big pins. There are about 6 more smaller pins. Does anyone know how to get this Dell battery pack work? This is the one: http://store.yahoo.com/laptopsforless/b1newbliionb.html
Dell part numbers 15622, 76039 or 04950.

Some update:
Datel.com sells 5/3.3V DC/DC converter for $60: http://store.datel.com/cgi-bin/datel.storefront/3ca210bd037de8e2271e26aabf0206a3/Product/View/8124350
It could be hooked up to a laptop battery pack.

Does anyone know how to get the 14.4V voltage out on the DELL battery pack?

Piggy,
The first thing to do it to get a dc/dc converter that has the right voltage and amperage to power the Audrey. That Datel.com 5/3.3V DC/DC converter looks like it *might" not work being that Input Voltage Range is 18V-34V although the amperage is approx 3A which is good. Can you call the company to check what the lowest DC voltage it will work with?

Next would be to hook it up to a 9 or 12V DC powersupply to make sure it will power the Audrey. Once it does we can work on the battery pack. I have access to all kinds of older laptop batteries & chargers. I will start to look to see what ones will work best for our application.

If we work this together it will go faster. Cool? email me: livin_4fun@hotmail.com

I found the part we need... I think!

Maxim MAX1627 & MAX1626

I just ordered some eval samples to see if they will work. Also, they are very inexpensive, like $4.

The right Datel component is DSM-5/2.65-3.3/3-D12 - goes from 12-18V. The question is how low a lithium pack will go while still holding some charge - but DC/DC should go under 12V I hope. This Datel would be good for car installations too. Dell battery pack gave the voltage out when I pulled the pin closest to negative socket down with 1K resistor. I will order from Datel, I do not think I would be able to assemble a similar DC/DC converter from the free Maxim part under $60, considering the spending on all shipping and electronic components, not to mention my time and the risk of rendering her useless.

here is a pinout image i grabbed from elsewhere, an old mac printer cable has the correct connector on it

http://www.bloodyeck.com/projects/audrey/AudreyPinout.jpg

I know it's an unfair deal, but I'd be willing to share half of my printer cable (plus cost for construction?) for the other half of this (the IC and board to hook upto my dell battery)

I found a pretty simple schematics with Maxim parts: http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~steve/TuxScreen/ The MAX727/728 comes in a TO220 package, so no need for SMD soldering. I already got the samples from Maxim.

For those of us who don't have laptop batteries just piling up around our houses...
Might wanna look at a Sealed-lead acid battery. They're pretty cheap ($10 to $20), depending on Amp/Hours.

sure they're bulky and heavy, but you'll get TONS of battery life. Also, If someone has an old Power-Wheels electric Toy kiddie car, gut-out the battery and you've got a Really high capacity pack... Voltage conversion is still a problem, but not one that can't be overcome.

You guys still working on this? I have some of the older-style MAC cables that could be used. Let me know if you're still interested and I'll check exactly how many I have. Thanks.

If anyone is still working on thei, I've found some voltage regulators that only requires 2 capacitors and they're cheap (around $2). They're National parts:
http://www.national.com/ds/LM/LM1085.pdf is the 3A version
http://www.national.com/ds/LM/LM1086.pdf is the 1.5A version
I haven't done it yet, but I'm going to build a little supply for one of my Audrey's (original is dead) using an old laptop power supply. I don't see why it wouldn't work the same way with a battery pack.

I just got hold of one oif these audreys today at the fleamarket and the guy didnt have the power supply or stylus for it .
Does anyone have an extra stylus they can sell and also have the pin layout of the power supply as i may be able to make one other work if i knew the pin layout.
thanks
