Got my first Audrey with no Power Supply!
Help, don't know the pin outs for the power connector!

I got my very first Audrey (yes, I'm a n00b) and it didn't come with a power supply at all!
I read some of the threads here concerning dead PSU's.
Does anybody know the pinouts of the power supply connector on the Audrey?
Looks like an 8 Pin Mini Din. Anyone know where to buy an 8 Pin Mini Din?

I'd rather find an "off the shelf" power supply, but I don't think there is one made.
I doubt the Rat Shack will have one.

I guess if there isn't a simple "off the shelf" solution, I guess I'll have to build one from a small computer PSU. I found one with 3.3V @2A, 5.0V @3A. Pretty close to the Audrey's 3.3V @1.5A, 5.0V @2A specs.

Is that close enough?

Thanks,
-Ed

Bump. Bump.
Anybody know the pin outs for the mini Din connector for the power supply?
Let alone where to buy the mini Din connector itself?

There is a diagram on my Aud's PS that shows

Pins 1,3,6 = +3.3v
Pins 4,7 = +5.0v
Pins 2,5,8,Shell = Ground

If I'm not mistaken the Mac uses 8 pin mini Dins for it's serial output although I don't know if the pin configuration is the same. Let me know if you find out.

Where did you get the PS you are using? I had one of my PS's die and the smallest PS I could fine was an ATX unit. It worked but is bulky.

Yep, Mac printer cable will work, get yourself a six foot length, cut it in half, and have two of them!

I ordered some from Jameco. I'll let you know which one works out.
Here's teh link:

https://www.jameco.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/Jameco/home.d2w/report?search=&sort=&startRowNum=21&totalSize=263&cgrfnbr=780&cgmenbr=91&ctgys=503%3B528%3B780%3B&Next.x=21&Next.y=14

I bought a few, hoping it'll work. Thanks for the pin outs.
BTW, I have no idea which pin is what. Could you post a pic/diagram showing which one is what? If you can't post, I can host the pic.

THanks,
-Ed

Thanks a lot!
I'm firing up the soldering iron as I type this.
Hopefully, she'll giggle for me tonight. :)

I'll post pics of the process on the [H]ard forums if anyone's interested.

Darn it. I wired everything up correctly. (measure five times, cut once.) Audrey turns on then shuts off. Turns on, shuts off. etc. I get only as far as the "3Com proudly presents" screen.

I used this power supply:
http://www.jameco.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/Jameco/searchResult.d2w/report?sort=BKW&search=190182

Hmmm. Is my Audrey DOA? I had no idea if it worked at all, since I got it with no power supply at all to begin with.

Nothing was smoking or burning. No sparks flying.

Do you have access to an oscilloscope to check how “clean” the output of your power supply is. It looks like you got the pins right (or at least one of them ":) ), otherwise you would not see the start up screen.

I was hoping it would work for you. Perhaps it just needs to be flashed? Do you have a cf card and a flash writer perhaps?

Sketchy,
You are right. Reflashing Audrey may fix the problem. The only thing that is really important if you go down this path is to make sure that you can "test" boot the image from CF first, before you reflash your flash memory. You do not want the power supply to change its mind in the middle of reflashing. That would most likely make her permanently unusable.

Sorry this is my first and only Audrey. (I did mention that I'm a n00b)

I don't have an ocilliscope. So I can't check how "clean" the power is.

How would I "test" boot the image from CF first?
I've read about it. I guess I have to go buy a 32MB Compact Flash card. Man, I'm spending an awful lot of money to get this Audrey to work. I wish I didn't have to buy 5 PSU's to find one that would be compatible, and then not work. Grrrr.

To me it sounds like the PS is cyclinge due to lack of or too much load. Take a look at the voltages while she is cycling.

I did essentially the same thing after my Aud's PS smoked. I used a ATX PS. I had to add extra load to get the PS to fire up.

Couple of things

1. Jameco catalog shows that unit as being a "Refurbed" sale item http://www.jameco.com/Jameco/Products/ProdCT/p063.pdf
could it be bad? I never trust refurb's.

2. I wonder if the unused 12v line needs to be loaded? A lot of the switching PS's won't work right without some load.

The PSU doesn't seem to be cycling on and off. I hooked up eight 12V fans pulling 0.1A each. The PSU is rated for 1.0A for 12V. Fans worked fine. I detected no change in RPM, and the fans didn't turn on or off. I guess I'll have to go buy a volt meter to see for sure if the 5V and 3.3V lines are working properly.

I really think the Audrey is the problem. The place I bought it from is shipping me a power supply(it took them a week to respond to my calls and emails!), but I fear I going to be running into the same problem.

I guess flashing the Audrey is my only chance now, but I don't know how that will work, since it won;t even stay on. Help!

Just wanted to point out that jayt posted this in another thread...

The Audrey power supply was made by ANAM in Korea http://www.anamic.co.kr/. Click on "SMPS /Standard Items" then select "AP1521-US" from the drop down menu. Might be a good lead to find replacement PS's.

Finally bought a decent digital volt meter.
I read 3.4V and 5.01V where they should be. So, all of my wiring is correct, and the PSU is AOK.
So that means the Audrey itself is hosed.

Damn. I guess I can try booting from a CF card. I just bought a Sandisk 32MB. Hope it works.

Well, I tried booting from a CF Card, but no success.
I tried several times, with several different images I downloaded.
I'm Running WinXP Pro.
I used NTRW to write the image. It never gave me any bad checksum errors or anything.
I got the following when writing to the CF card

NTRW v2.00
Removable media
Cylinders: 0:3
TracksPerCylinder: 255
SectorsPerTrack: 63
BytesPerSector: 512
bufsize is 65536
32112640 bytes written

I got the following error displayed on my Audrey when I tried to boot from the CF card.

FATAL: Invalid image XLv01.12

I bought a 32MB SanDisk. The same one listed on all the FAQ's, but the listed size by checking properties in WinXP Pro is 31,764,480 bytes.
I wrote to it with 32,112,640 bytes with no problems, so obviously WinXP is not reading it right. I also tried MKCF with both sizes 31,764,480 and 32,112,640 bytes. No luck either way.

So I guess my Audrey is totally dead.
Here's the weird part. When I turn the Audrey off and on, and leave the CF card in, I get the "3Com Proudly Presents" screen, and it stays on that screen without cycling on and off. But it just stays on that screen, indefinitely.

Man. Just my luck. :(
Audrey loves me not.

In other posts it has been said that turning off Audrey with the cf card installed will corrupt the image on the card.
I always make sure to remove the card BEFORE turning off the power. If you have done this at the first, every attempt after that was probably trying to use a bad image.
ezflyer

ps: to test the image on the card you have to hold down only one of the buttons(can't remember which). That lets Audrey
read the image but not over write the ipl
