I wanted to take a survey/poll of what was being uses so someone could work on an alternative image. I'm using Jukebox3.cf currently and I use dial-up for internet and am not networked currently.

Below is a list of the components to Infinity's new image that I'm going to flash tonight, to see what he's done and might start a custom image that suites my needs.....unless someone beats me to it. Anyway, add yes/no with comments to each component so we know what everyone else is using on their Audrey:

Original Address Book (Yes, palm sync is cool)
Original Date Book (Yes, Part of palm package)
screen capture (No, usless it's part of original snapshot)
onscreen keyboard (large, small)(large-No, Small-Yes)
calculator (No, I'd use palm Vx)
caller id (No, can use with dial-up without 2nd modem)
alarm clock (No, original Date Book did more than 24 hours)
picture frame (RandomPic by mheeli, touch screen to exit) (Yes, FTP pictures to Audrey)
mp3(both phjuke and phplay for online streaming) (No, I have RF remote for comupter and hardwired to stereo)
image viewer (Yes)
ped text editor (Yes, great tool)
icq (No, Don't chat much)
phpostal(mail) (No, and original mail can go too, web mail)
real voyager (YES, YES, most important improvements)
real player (Yes)
audio recorder (Yes)
playlist maker (No need if you are using phjuke)(No, not networked, no MP3)
audio mixer (Yes)
Paint (Yes, Great...Even with original Date Book scribble, this is simpler to use to jot a quick note)
eBulletin(Paint+LED, urgent=Blinking LED,Attention=LED on) (Yes, kinda my suggestion, thanks for listening)
VNC viewer (No, not networked)
wm-pop up menu (No, I like to not rely on a keyboard)
screen saver (in semi working condition with RandomPic, previews perfectly but it starts hidden in the background when activated after a set time, it only comes back with a keypress then it will continue fine, exit with a screen tap. if someone can bring it to the foreground then we have a working PicFrame screen saver) (Yes, this sounds cool)
audrey option icon (Yes, gotta have this)
shutdown (this is phshutdown, inspired by jukebox3.1.cf, not useful without hardware power button hack)(Yes, great thought Jukebox, I always try and unplug right before she reboots, not save)
Standard QNX apps:
Shelf (Yes, a must)
neutrino sin (Yes, I don't know how to use this, but it looks important)
file manager (Yes, a must)
network setup (No, not networked)

Hopefully my selections will fit on Audrey???
I'm new to this, but it's been fun so far. It'll take me a lot longer to build a image like this, but hopefully someone with more experience/time will make it. This is nothing against Jukebox or Infinity, quite the opposite. They are opened the door and show us all what is possible, but they've also made it difficult to stop using their images and live with a shaky or dead Audrey.

Please copy this thread and put in your own Yes/No's

Hey bmann, good job. As the maker of the original image here I want to let you guys know what's possible and not. By now I understand that hardly anybody understands what I've done.
Two avenues are open for exploration. Original Audrey with its original apps and a few hacks like voyager etc. Or continue the road I took and make my images more customizeable, as I'm setting up here now: http://www.prins.net/audrey/downloads.html
Ofcourse the same could be done for original Audrey but resources there are very limited.
I have my hopes up for new storage devices like the Disk on Key and other flash devices that can be hooked up probably before years end on the USB port, but probably not at this time.
You guys have to believe me that these 2 avenues are open for exploration and nothing else at this time. If I read a post "hey let's drop CallerId and bring Datebook back" I choke on my dinner almost.

Actually, this was suppose to take the focus off of your work and get something that the datebook people want. I'm not 100% sold on that approach either. I think your on the right track and if I was networked, I'd have the datebook on a web interface, that would be better than original, but palm syncing would be tougher.

I see all the post on your threads about the datebook and every time I think "man, these people just won't quit", you've been very clear about it, anyway....

I'm not saying put datebook in Jukebox 4-1, I'm trying to get a feel for what others want and is it worth the time for others (like me) to do it.

Jukebox,
It's good to hear that you are taking time to eat. I was beginning to wonder.

This is a good idea.

I want Phjuke (from Infinity's image), Voyager, Editor, File Explorer, Shelf Config, Picframe or Randompic so I can tap the screen and the "desktop" comes back, Editor, Image Viewer,

I don't need ICQ, Caller ID, Alarm Clock (unless somebody can convert it to 12 hour format), Address Book, Date Book.

I have been modifying Jukebox's image and Infinity's image in small ways, like customizing my background gif, and deleting stuff I don't use. If my deletion does harm I always have backup images stored on a share and on a CF card.

I also don't know what Neutrino Sin does. Obviously I'm a beginner. Can this be deleted?

What you can do ofcourse is grab an original Audrey, put shelf on it with a new background, add Editor, voyager and a couple of other little apps like picfame etc. FileManager isn't needed because there isn't any purpose for it. This way you can make an original Audrey look a lot nicer at least. Could be done within an hour by anyone that knows what he is doing. No don't ask me..

AudreyX3,
Neutrino Sin is the ultimate hacking utility. If you don't plan any serious hacking you can delete it. It serves no other purpose.
Slowly I start to understand something. While I had a complete web site running on DOS in the early nineties and developed my computer skills from there, many people now only know Windoze, which has put many of us in some kind of slavery. The only thing I like from windows is to play with the registry file and let it do things it's not supposed to do or retrieve information you're not supposed to know.

IF I've time this coming weekend I will setup the orginal Audrey 3COM platform with a new desktop, add some apps like voyager and some more and leave Browser in too. You'll have it all and at least it will look a lot better. Maybe I can do it sooner.

For me, I'm not networked and I'd like to remove some of the network stuff to make room for images to use in Picframe (FTP Transfer).

But, without the network adapter I can't do much for building my own image. I tried Infinity's image and I'm already back to Jukebox3-1. I've been in modifying the WM menu and the shelf. The shelf is acting wierd now, it doesn't alway auto-close (hide) and when it does, it leaves grey where it was (no background). I'm doing the double drawer stuff like Infinity's shelf, but I agree with Jukebox, why make it just like windoz?? Start button is just an extra step.

"IF" you decide to make a alternative image, put in: Shelf, Voyager, WM Menu, FTP, File manager, dial-up, Ped (Editor), Paint (incase it's not stock) Image Viewer and PicFrame and that will work for a dial-up image.

Thanks Jukebox, it would be greatly appreciated! Are you saying that it would still have the Palm-sync'able Addressbook & Datebook?

Thanks!

I was curous. IS anyone interested in network printing form photon apps? I know my image has this, and it's something I find very useful, however I never hear anything about anyone else using it. I was wondering if anyone else printed from audrey.

Hey davincy27, good to hear from you on this board again. I print from Audrey with a local printer and that works fine in all my images. (USB1 prints 2 blank pages after each job and still works with the kojak printer driver)
Would it be possible for you to make a package that can be downloaded to install network printing in any image as a choice? It's probably not a good option to implement in an image (or just a basic setup) because users have so many different printers and most will need some modification to make theirs work.

Wow,

I was just searching for network printing topics and this popped up! Yeah, I have a little cheap Canon USB printer attached to one of my Audrey's, but I'd like to be able to print to my Windows PC printer from my other Audreys.

Also, I've seen references to storing Voyager cache on a shared directory. How do you do that?

I've been stripping down different images and when things die I flash again and start over.

Thanks

Use preferences of voyager and set up the cache wherever you consider it's convenient for you, including a share.

Isn't davinci27's hack for network printing readily available on audreyhacking.com? It sure is on this board. Just do a search for it and you'll find it.
The only reason I never implemented it is I have enough questions already and this one will generate a lot more.

I fixed my shelf troubles. the second shelf had the "Shelf Open' Checked and unchecking it made it autoclose like normal. And the grey behind the shelf was because the shelf was open at 'boot-up', not anymore, it boots with the shelf closed.

Not sure, but last night I left a scribble open with the LED flashing and this morning, no message, no flashing LED and the time was WAY off. I don't think the power went off and I did a time update before putting Audrey to sleep. No big deal, just wierd....did she reboot herself? We'll never know.......

Just my 2 cents.
I have an Audrey image I use for my wife in the kitchen and one for r&d.(two audreys)

the one for my wife has acid, fast startup, and phjuke, as well as all the Audrey apps.
use it for mail, playing mp3 from a 98 machine and caller id, channels are set to custom pages that redirect to news/weather sites. Its handy.
We would never print from it ever.
Its for seeing that mail came in and seeing who is calling and playing RAFI mp3 for the kids at breakfast.
The only thing that it lacks and I don't think that there is any hope to fix it soon, is the ability to stream NPR news.

My R&D image is Jukebox's image ( the one that infinity changed, because I like phjuke, and don't need dial-up)
different background image, the great one of the white background with the female face, I forget were I got it.

Phpostal needs work, to be moved to my wife's Audrey, its not stable, but would be great if it was.
I am probably unusual, but we actually sync the Audrey with our palms, so the date/address book are nice.
Although if I could get a newer realplayer that did npr.org I would sacrifice the palm apps.

Anyway, Everyone's hard work is appreciated every day by my kids.

thanks!

Jukebox, This is exactly what I want, a version with the address book, Voyager, buttons for everything, maybe a better email app, and whatever else fits. Anyway to make the channel button do something useful?

Jukebox. My father's been sick so I've been pulled away from the audrey for awhile. Its good to have time to get back to things, and I' m really excited to see all the work being done on the audrey. I think that is a great idea. even better, I think would be a system of packages that could be installed by a coupls of simple commands. Maybe this is something worth working on.

Audrey X3 network printing from photon is already available and easy enough to setup. Head over to audreyhacking.com to see instructions. Tomorrow, I'll repost all my audrey files. These have all of the files neccessary for photon network printing.

Streaming NPR isn't to hard. if you have the full realplayer installed, you can try some of the Public Radio systems. I use WFCR for NPR news.

davinci,
When was the last time you listened to NPR? I remember listening to it a few weeks back, and it worked. I do not normally listen to it and the other day I was asked if it was still working so I went to the page and now I get an error when opening the stream? I didn't know if I changed something and caused realplayer to stop working, but I also noticed that amazon.com cd samples stopped working also... Is it just my Audrey? Thanks.

WFCR.org works for NPR, thanks!!!!

As for the other question, yes nrp.org news used to work up until a week or two ago, now it does not.
the full real player says "this site uses content not supported by this player (example:flash)"
the original one doesnt say anything and just doesnt work.

So the must have just changed the site.

It will be soon with a USB mouse in my USB image. I can get it to work partly now and scroll down, but not up yet. I will try further to set this up, but we may have to wait for the next version of QNX with new drivers.
I'm against using the Channel knob for this. I use this knob as a replacement for three F keys that we don't have on the keyboard. All buttons perform as F keys in QNX apps. Now I can cycle through past calls in CallerID and do lots of things with other apps too with the Channel knob.
A thread is available on this board that explains which F keys are available by doing what with the buttons.

I'd like ICQ that would work with Audrey.
I could never get phICQ to work.

I don't always leave my computers on, so it's nice to check email, websites, or ICQ without having to fire up a PC.
