What's new in V.USB1-1

- Updated shelf.cfg to have shelf resemble windows and resolve network and screen problems
- Activated the full use of Network Cfg
- Added tiny ttcpip stack again, /nto/bin/ifconfig and /nto/photon/bin/mount all from RTP 6.1
- Added instructions in /kojak/networkUSB.sh
- Added the use of a USB keyboard in wm popup menu

QNX supports only 2 USB nics, klsi and pegasus. Performance is overall increased. MP3 streaming with voyager works like a charm. The script /kojak/networkUSB.sh is setup for out of the box klsi support. Setup of your nic is done with Network Cfg.
Changing to pegasus still requires the 3 step process as described in the manual.

MP3 playing form a share goes with a lot more overhead than over HTTP and still causes Audrey to slowdown somewhat.
When you use fs-nfs2 instead of fs-cifs you can raise buffers above the default of 200 and you will have much fewer problems with your share, if any at all. Your milage with MP3 playing from a share still may vary and this is not a problem with the network, but a problem with your share setup in Audrey. Playing MP3 from a share slows down Audrey more or less with any image.

I will appreciate feedback.
Enjoy!

I'm trying to get my Netgear EA-101 working again with my Audry. I had changed
the vendor id and product id to match the 3com and it worked OK but would hang
(Audry would report that the USB ethernet was disconnected) after a couple of
minutes of use. I switched to the jukebox USB images hoping that the more
recent klsi driver would in some way help. Along the way I reflashed my
EA-101 back to it's original vendor and product IDs, and I was wondering if
the klsi driver in these images cares about the vendor/product IDs. I can
"see" the EA-101 when I run the "usb" command, but the network config doesn't
show a tab for the adaptor and any network access brings up the dialup
networking dialog. Any suggestions or is my EA-101 toasted?

Thanks,
KurtV

I like to know if this image works as advertised. If you have problems I like to know about that too. I need feedback to know if I'm still on the right track.

It appears this image has 1.6 megs regular storage space available and 3.8 megs in /tmp. No wonder this image runs like a champ and especially no wonder voyager runs without any problems.
I never made the distinction between regular space and tmp space before.
By deleting Network Cfg, only of use to set a fixed IP, you can get 3.1 regular storage space total.
Well still learning.

I found this interesting post from Dusty in another thread:

with jukebox-usb1, I've gotten a logitech USB optical mouse to work, and
even more importantly, the mac optical mouse (the one button
clear-plastic sucker....) it works awesome for the audrey!
nothing special is required to do this... sometimes it has to be plugged
in when you boot up, but sometimes it doesnt...

good luck

jukebox,

is there a way to change the volume settings on this image so it doesn't start up at full blast?

thanks for your work, btw. I love the usb image. It worked with my SMC nic with no fuss.

The master volume can be changed with the volume button on Audrey's back. I believe when you set the master volume lower and reboot it remains on the setting you just created. I believe you can do the same with the volume setting in shelf.
Let me know if this works for you. I remember changing settings in config files too setting them to 100(%), but I have to dig into this image to find those back, they were in /config and are clearly recognizable by their name btw. You may be able to do it yourself.
Although I removed ActionPalette, the kojak volume executable still runs in this image.
I'm curious how this works out for you.

I found out when you want to autostart Date & Time in this image you have to add the following in the original /kojak/boot.sh:
sleep 10
/kojak/Datebook.sh

If like me you want to set your hostname of choice for Audrey you add:
sleep 5
hostname <your-hostname>
If you don't autostart Date & Time the sleep command has to be 15

The hostname utility you can download from my Audrey Repository.

While the mount utility is hardcoded in Audrey I added mount from the RTP in /nto/photon/bin. You can use it from there or you'll get the hardcoded mount.
By adding the following links in /kojak/boot.sh you will have the use of the RTP mount and all it's extra features from anywhere again:
ln -sP /nto/photon/bin/mount /proc/boot/mount
ln -sP /nto/photon/bin/mount /nto/bin/mount

Jukebox,

Does the "jukebox USB1-1" have telnetd and ftpd installed?

By the way... thank you for investing so much time into the creation images.

Yes, telnet and ftp to Audrey, use root both as userid and password. It works out of the box.

*** I opened a new thread on this issue last night but just realized that this is probably a better place for my problem ***

I have not been able to get a Linksys USB10T ethernet adapter working on my Audrey using
the USB V.1-1 image.
This same Audrey works perfectly with a 3Com 3C83510P adapter using this image.
I'm using a D-Link DI-704P router with DHCP enabled on my home network.

Here is the config for the router:
Internal Gateway = 192.168.0.1
IP Pool Range = 100-199
Subnet Mask = 255.255.248.0
DNS1 = 167.206.112.138
DNS2 = 167.206.112.3

I have tried the many combinations in networkUSB.sh. All have had the klsi line commented.
I tried leaving everything else in place and enabling this line to start:
/nto/bin/io-net -d pegasus -pttcpip -ppppmgr

When that didn't work I then commented the netmanager line,
enabled the regular ip stack (-ptcpip) and tried enabling the dhcp.

When that didn't work I commented dhcp then enabled ifconfig as follows:
/nto/bin/ifconfig en0 192.168.0.127
but that failed also.

All combinations result in the following:
I try to navigate to yahoo.com using Voyager and I get a DNS Failure error.
Trying to go to the router's ip, 192.168.0.1 returns a Connect Failure error.
I cannot ping the router either.

USB Detect correctly reports that the USB10T is connected.

I assume the Network Cfg option is only relevant when netmanager is enabled.
In any case, I have checked it with all the different config options and I can't
see the Devices tab whenever the 10-T is connected. The Devices tab will only appear
when the 3Com adapter is connected. I'm guessing this is the key to my problem.

I have always clicked the USB Connect option after changing the settings in networkUSB.sh.
I then choose Shutdown and powerdown the unit for several seconds before powering it back up
as per the instructions.

Any help or insight into this problem is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Dan D.

Linksys USB10T can have either a klsi or a pagasus chip. Wheh you do a search on this board for USB10T you'll find a couple of threads about this adapter.
I believe the klsi version will work and the pegasus version won't. QNX support for pegasus is limited to only a few adapters.
When you check with Network Cfg and you don't see a network tab the driver for the adapter isn't loaded and your internet connection won't work.
Have you tried with the klsi driver? Hopefully you're lucky and have a klsi chip.

I have several Linksys USB10T adapters. I have opened them all and only one has the klsi chip. I have seen other posts about the USB10T adapters but I didn't think they were using an image which supports the pegasus chip. I have done all of my testing with a pegagus adapter in hopes that I could get it (and all of the others) to work successfully. I'll try out the klsi but based on your input I don't anticipate many problems.

Thanks, Dan D.

Jukebox - I just want to clarify one point you made above. You said:

"When you check with Network Cfg and you don't see a network tab the driver for the adapter isn't loaded and your internet connection won't work."

I assume you meant the Devices tab instead of the Network tab? I see the Network tab every time when it doesn't work.

I've been using a SMC 2202 (Pegasus based) adapter with jukebox's USB1-1 image for about
a month now with no problems at all. I picked the SMC 2202 up on ebay for $10.00 (+ shipping).
This adapter is the only one that QNX officially supports with the pegasus driver.
I know this doesn't help you with your USB10T, but after fighting with a Netgear EA101 (klsi based),
I decided to go with something that had the best chance of working.

One other thought - I had to use the tiny tcp-ip stack (ttcpip). When I used the full stack (tcpip) I had
problems.

Kurt,

Did you have to do anything special in the setup? Would you mind posting you setup parameters here so I can match them and have some final confirmation that my USB10T does not work?

Thanks,
Dan

Juke... any word on 802.11b (USB of course) support in an upcoming image?

Livin,
I expected a new USB driver for 802.11b in the new RTP 6.2. However there were no new USB supported devices included. They have an Orinoco driver for their 802.11b ethernet card but still no USB support. Very diappointing.

Since this thread came up again on this board it might be good to know for those who are not familiar with this image, USB1-1 still is pretty much up to date, despite the release date. It's built as a platform that's highly customizable for networking purposes through my Audrey Repository. By downloading/replacing Sketchy's acid 2.3 and davinci's PicSaver and phJuke your'e a kind of completely up to date again, while installing most other available software for Audrey is done by just downloading the executable, since this image is prepared already for many apps, including for example ntAim and others.
All original Audrey supported hardware is supported "out of the box", while you can hook up several USB mice and a keyboard by just pressing a menu item. If you want to know more please review the manual for USB1-1 on my Audrey web site for more information.

Kurt,
I'd also like the particulars about how you got the SMC NIC working.

What I finally figured out is that the built in QNX driver for the Pegasis chip is only available on Intel hardware. If I remember correctly, Audrey is running on the StrongARM processor (someone feel free to correct me on her processor). I believe the source code for the driver is available and could be compiled on the correct processor, then loaded at boot to support the various Pegasus based NICs.

Has anyone else (preferably someone who can actually follow through with any conversion/compiling requirements to get us a useable driver) looked into this?

Thanks

<I'd also like the particulars about how you got the SMC NIC working.>

All you can do is load the klsi or pegasus driver for a supported NIC. The only choice you have is to use the full or tiny tcpip stack and from what I have read here, you should use the tiny stack, ttcpip, for the pegasus based SMC NIC.
From what I understand Audrey's CPU is x86 and therefore Intel compatible.
