MP3 playing on Audrey with HTTP protocol

MP3 playing form a share goes with a lot more overhead than over HTTP and causes Audrey to slowdown somewhat.

As you can read on this message board, this problem has been around from the very beginning of Audrey playing MP3. Interrupted sound and skips are normal, unless you use Audrey for MP3 exclusive.

When you use fs-nfs2 instead of fs-cifs you can raise buffers above the default of 200 and you will have fewer problems with your share.

Your milage with MP3 playing from a share will vary and this is not a problem with the network, but a problem with the share setup in Audrey. Playing MP3 from a share slows down Audrey more or less with any image, inlcuding original Audrey.

I think the concept of playing MP3 from a share on Audrey as we know it today should be changed to HTTP for the benefit of all of us. It's no problem to play MP3's over the network from a web server, by making a web page with the MP3's in it. Are Playlists available that can do the same over HTTP from a web page? If so I think that's the direction we have to go, since setting up a web server on your PC can be done for free and without much trouble.

Who is able to make this happen?

I think I found the answer already.

Don't autostart a share at boot. Use a share when you need it from shelf. Play MP3's over your LAN from a web server. The playlist editor in MediaPlayer allows you to setup playlists over your LAN from your own web server, instead of using a share. Could this be the solution?

I think it was the intention of QNX to have it work this way.

You can do it that way, that was the original route I went. The problem with it is the editing of the lists on the Audrey is a little bit cumbersome etc. A fairly simple alternative is the real server route I posted below in the topic"Listen to MP3's etc through realplayer." This allows streaming and total control of what you listen to, you can control winamp with a browser remot plugin from the Audrey. I like this because I only have to create playlists in one place, and can switch from with the browser control(snowcrash). Best of all you don't have to install any additional software on the Audrey to make this work. Now if we could get Realplayer to play video streams I could have a TV in my kitchen via realserver ;)

bmann28,
Your idea MP3 with RealPLayer is great. I haven't been able to try it yet, pretty busy lately.., but I will and I recommend others do too. What is the exact remote browser plugin you mention? I install it in winamp? I can run winamp also in os/2, Microsoft is losing ground.
The way I propose over HTML should be very easy with a cgi or java script that generates a web page from your MP3 directory on the fly. I don't expect anybody to start making a web page by hand with all his MP3's... Probably you can find the script or java app you need on the web. Isn't making the playlist in MediaPlayer point and click from there on?
About the streaming video. It does work without a problem for a couple of seconds and Audrey's storage space and/or memory is full and hangs. Without extra storage it's impossible at this time.

I believe the plug-in Bman is referring to is Snowcrash, no?
http://www.mp3pirate.com/snowcrash/

I love this plug in, I can use Audrey or my laptop (anything with a browser really) to control my music server which is hooked-up to a digital audio processor which in turn is hooked up to my stereo. I've got speakers all over the house, so playing from audrey's sound card isn't really necessary for me. Just out a curiosity, though, how does she sound? I don't have any of the mp3 players loaded.

is there a snowcrash equivalent for a linux mp3 player, besides the majorly bloated mp3 jukebox apps

Globecom Jukebox didn't seem bloated to me, but that's just my opinion. I have it running on a dedicated P90 box with Red Hat 7.2 and I'm very happy with it. Web-based interface, mySQL to keep track of the songs, a random feature to keep the music playing without having to select stuff all the time, and fairly good installation instructions. Check it out: http://www.globecom.net/jukebox/

I'm with g00z in that the jukebox server is playing through the stereo, to take advantage of the speakers throughout the house. Audrey is on the cabinet next to the entertainment center, so I don't have to have one of the PCs running to control the jukebox. I have another unit coming from uBid that is destined for the back bedroom, so I can control the music without leaving the room.

Just another thought: I understand Globecom has an option to add streaming audio to the jukebox using the IceCast server. I didn't look into it before since my whole plan was to connect to the stereo, and more rooms in the house have speakers instead of computing devices, but since I discovered the Audrey I'm thinking that I could have my cake and eat it too: the server feeding audio to the stereo for rooms that have speakers wired, and streaming audio on the LAN for rooms with Audreys to receive. I'll have to experiment with this when I get my second Audrey.

Snowcrash is what I was referring to. It runs on the same machine as winamp. The interface is strictly HTML so Audrey handles it just fine. I believe there are also some other things on the winamp site for controlling winamp but I have not tried any of those yet. The Media Player playlists don't seem to be standard, and I didn't feel like writing something to create them for me. I had a problem getting media player to load the playlist through a web page. I couldn't get media player to open an MP3 directly from a web page either. This was after adding all the plugins etc I could find for audio for phplay. RealPlayer on the Audrey wouldn't open ram files that had a list of mp3s in it becuse it can't play mp3s in the configuration that 3Com used. Alot of this could be mitigated by changing some things on the Audrey but I wanted something simple for a friend of mine that isn't unix savy. Also I wanted something I could use on my other computers so the realserver becomes an audio server for the whole house. I don't know if snowcrash will work for you on OS/2 but you can give it a shot. I write code for Windows/on Windows all day so I forget that many people don't have a windows machine to do stuff. Not trying to turn you to the dark side but have you tried XP yet? We are having a blast with it at the office even some of the solaris guys we have are impressed with it.
