Help with a Sandisk 64m cf
I've tried everything!

I have a Sandisk 64m CompactFlash with a PCMCIA adaptor. I'm watching Audrey's messages through the serial port. No matter what I set the image size to with mkcf, it reports "FATAL: invalid image". I know that johnhamm encountered this problem, and its documented on this board. I calculated the image size of 30670848 from what Audrey reported (same as the size that worked for him EA00h * 200h, or 59904 * 512) but i still get the same error. What am i doing wrong? Audrey reports a sector size of 576 (240h) instead of 512, but i've tried with both sector sizes and neither work. Does anyone have any insight?
The original problem was documented here:

thanks in advance

I had the same issue myself, but after seeing that post about 0000EA00h*200h working, I did that and it worked. What procedure are you using exactly to do this? Is it on a PC?

mkcf input.cf output.cf 30670848
ntrw write output.cf 30670848

If that doesn't work, then maybe this will work:

mkcf input.cf bigbad.cf 64225280 <= The true size of the SanDisk 64MB card, 1EA00h*200h
ntrw write output.cf 64225280 <=This should overwrite everything on the card
mkcf input.cf output.cf 30670848
ntrw write output.cf 30670848

This will at least fill the 2nd half of the CF card with 00h. Perhaps the Audrey doesn't even look at this area of the card, but I just thought that the possibility might exist.

I got my Audrey last week and the 64MB CF SANDISK probably two days ago. I have been hesitant to use the EA00hx200h because (1) It simply isn't the size of the card and (2) the Audrey is, as you mentioned, reporting a sector size of 240h instead of 200h. I was concerned that the Audrey might not live through the upgrade because she was misreporting that sector size. Wuzzup with her anyhow? 240h=576....kind of like 64bit*9bit instead of 64bit*8bit.

Thanks,
MKanar

Yes, its on a PC, I have to use my laptop running Windows ME (laptop's a bit old for 2000, i tried) because i don't have a cf card reader/writer, just a CF->PCMCIA adaptor... i create the image with MKCF and use Hex Workshop to write it to the card... i'm using Hex Workshop because i've heard that NTRW doesn't work with WinME, so I might have to break down and buy a usb CF reader for my workstation... i'll see if i can fill up the back half of the card like you said

Have you tried Germinator Explorer yet?

One of my setups is like this:

Computer<=>Epson Photo Printer<=>PCMCIA(PC Card) Built into Printer<=>Epson-Branded CF PC Card<=>Actual CF

My other setup is Laptop<=>CF PC Card<=>Actual CF. This works for me.

If you use GerminatorExplorer or whatever it's called, be certain to boot the system up with the CF already in or hooked upto the computer.

I only have linux (haven't tried with CF yet), WindowsXP systems, and a laptop with QNX (still trying to figure out how to get it to redetect the hardware), so I guess that I can't really speak for WinME. As for NTRW, the only problem that I had was when I tried to use it to figure out the size of the CF card by writing an oversized image to it....I hypothesized that the size that NTRW reported when started having write errrors was the cards max size, but the numbers came up short compared to what Germenator reported.

Anyhow, good luck!

Gemulator Explorer has all its menus grayed out (ASPI drivers, but the ones i downloaded don't work)

NTRW (on a 2000 laptop here at work) just says "unsupported device type", pcmcia adaptor maybe?

RAWRITE can only write to A or B... who's stupid idea was that?

Hex Workshop is the only thing to write an image, and its images simply don't work!

(bangs head against wall)

OK, is it maybe because I'm using a PCMCIA adaptor and not the standard Sandisk usb drive? Has anyone else out there used a PC-Card adaptor successfully? It's a Simple Technologies adaptor, Windows sees it as a Sundisk ATA device. It doesn't look like it uses DMA, just something called "Int-13" (don't quote on me on that though, i know there's a 13 in the name somewhere). Is this device the root of all my headaches?
