UPDATE V.4-0 for "Another QNX Image" RELEASED
update

New MessageUPDATE V.4-0 for "Another QNX Image" RELEASED (modified 0 times) jukebox
Profile
Download available for V.4-0 on the usual place at audreyhacking.com or download here: http://www.audreyhacking.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=getit&lid=37

What's new in this version 4-0:

- Audrey starts with a new intro that blends in with the desktop thanks to Mike
- ActionPalette is deleted completely and replaced by 3 small scripts. No editing needed
- You can use Network Cfg to configure your ethernet nic for a fixed IP. No need to do anything for dhcp
- Modem users press a shelf button twice and are all set after a Reboot
- Dialer is highly configurable by clicking "Edit" and Network Cfg pops up. Choose Advanced Options if needed
- New "windows style" shelf that resolves network problems thanks to Sean_F
- Buttons are remapped, apps open full screen and some more litle stuff
- All original Audrey hardware supported out of the box
- Some minor other changes and tweaks, including a new users manual that you can download for review here: http://www.prins.net/audrey/manual.40

This update makes "Another QNX Image" identical in structure to the USB1-1 image. MP3 playing works like a charm over HTTP. For any image I recommend not to autostart a share. Use a share only when needed instead.

Feedback is very welcome.
Enjoy!

Much faster!!!
LOL, I love the boot up.

Bugs so far:
-Launch menu pops up randomly when running programs like phPostal, Voayager, etc. Disappears quickly though.

-phPostal still doesn't check mail by itself. Also, it would be nice if mail program would blink the LED like the original Audrey mail program. And also allow choices of blinking LED, steady LED, or no LED for email notification.

Because phPostal doesn't work, I keep going back to original Audrey programs.
Too bad, since This image is waaaaay faster!

Getting better with each image, Jukebox!
Thanks for all of your hard work!

Edwood,
Thanks for your feedback. I believe launchmenu pops up and disappears quickly as well when you tap the screen near the bottom corners. I'm aware of it, but can't do much about it. It's part of the behaviour of shelf.
About phPostal, I expect an update for this app any moment now. I'll make it available through my Audrey Repository for all users as soon as I can. However mail fetch does work manually with a single click and you have to enable the auto mail fetch. I believe I disabled it in all images because it's a bigger problem when you are in the process of setting up your account and phPostal starts to fetch mail before you're completely done. I don't know how to handle the led with phPostal when mail is received. I'm afraid it can't be done just like that.
Please check for the update of phPostal, you will have to download it direct in Audrey with voyager.

Maybe the author of phpostal would be so kind to add an option to run an application when new mail is recieved. That way you could create a shell script to blink the led when new mail arives. I don't use phpostal, but it should work the author would just have to add it.

It appears I have 2 megs in regular storage space available and 3.8 megs in /tmp. The regular storage space could be expanded easily to 3.5 megs by deleting Network Cfg, only of use to setup a fixed IP. No wonder this image runs like a champ. I have used the wrong method to calculate the free space and never made the distinction between regular storage space and /tmp space.
Still learning.

In all I really like this image!

What I like:
- nice interface
- better browser and email clients
- mp3s working in the browser
- fast start
- menu system

Don't like:
- Where is shelf.cfg in the menu? I do not see it anywhere.
- phMp3, I think phJuke is easier to use

There are a few apps that I am willing to part with. What is the best way to determine which files can safely be removed with specific apps? As an example, I do not use callerid, so I would like to remove CallerID.

thanks!

I moved shelf Cfg to the pop-up wm menu. Use Paste-Enter and you'll see. It's almost impossible to have shelf open the way you want at boot by using Shelf Cfg from shelf itself.
About MP3, when you want to use phJuke you should put it on your share, together with your MP3 files, it doesn't belong in any image in my opinion.
In general deleting apps is very easy. Check with Shelf Cfg what the executable is from the app you want to remove. It's either in /nto/bin or /nto/photon/bin, remove the executable and the shelf meny entry and you're done. The exception is CallerID, it's files are in /nto/acid. Remove the acid directory by using "rm -R /nto/acid" (without the quotes) and remove the shelf menu entry and you're done.

Thanks, I can find Shelf Cfg now. Is this documented somewhere? I can not find a reference to it.

I probably agree with you about phjuke being on a share. The only exception is that I will create a link from /nto/bin to it and it's supporting files.

BTW, it is really nice to be able to download files directly to the Audrey from the web! I have my own http site set up with files I commonly add to audrey. This is a much better experience than ftp'ing from the command line!

A couple additional questions:

- is pointer cam something that can be deleted for more space? I see that it is a plugin, so I am unclear on where the plugin fie might be.

- how do I exit the on-screen keyboard after it is launched?

- I assume that clicking set date and time, pulls that time from the net. But the time and date that is set is incorrect (right now it is showing Fri-21 04:19am and it is Thursday the 18th at 8:39am. Is there a way to set the time and date manually?

Hey Jukebox -

It doesn't seem like copy and paste (copy-v) are in this image. Is that the case? If I remember correctly, they were in V3.

Thanks.

lars 69,
I believe I documented this change in my what's new on my web site, but I may have forgotten to specificly mention it for this version.
Pointer cam can be removed from shelf with Shelf Cfg, but shelf will look kind of boring without it. You can delete the file ofcourse too, but it's so small it's hardly worth the trouble.
You can exit the large keyboard by clicking the Fn key and press Quit next.
About Time and Date. You have to use Set Time Zone for your region first. Time & Date is pulled from a server and it should work without a problem. However Time servers are busy sometimes, subject to maintenance etc. and sometimes pressing twice will do the trick, instead of once. It's not on autostart, you can do that easily by adding it to boot.sh, but modem users like it as it is now ofcourse.

bretb,
To be honest I don't know, however if it was in a previous version it still is, I certainly didn't delete this feature. I thought it's a standard feature and should work at all times.

It does not appear that we can change the root password. I tried two different ways. From a terminal window and telnet'ed into audrey. Neither indicate that they are erroring, but when I try to telnet in with the changed password, it errors and only lets me in with root as the password.

Setting time and date is not working at all. I have tried all day long on two different audreys. Has anyone else had any luck with this? I tried to edit Datebook.sh to add a different time server, but still no luck. Is there any way to manually set this? I even tried to set the time from command line via 'date' using date -s <date>.

I used the excellent hack from hw_irq to setup inetd, telnetd and ftpd. Apparently the password change doesn't work. You can find the hack in this thread: http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=3Com_Audrey&Post=219&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=
and maybe you can ask there about changing the password.

About Setting Date & Time. It's not on autostart, you have to press the Datebook button or the Shelf menu item.
If you run my original Datbook.sh script from the prompt it will tell you what the problem is, if any. You have different types of time servers and not many accept requests from users like us. On rare occasions I have had problems only when the Time server was busy or under maintenance and I consider that normal. I haven't heard this complaint from anybody else yet.

jkidd,
I suggest you reflash the image. I've never heard of this problem, never had it myself, but that doesn't help you much..
I think after a reflash it will work, you may have messed up something by now.
After the reflash run Datebook from the prompt in terminal and see what actually happens. It either sets the time and date correctly and you can see that happening or it gives an error and I need to see the error here if the problem persists, to be able to help you out.

There are a lot of good apps on this image, but there are some that not quite for me. I have been removing files that I do not personally need on my audrey.

What I have removed so far:
caller id
os2 mounting shell scripts
images for picture frame app
radio station shell script used in wm menu
and a few other misc apps.

In all I have clean up about 1.6 megs of room

# df
/dev/fs1p0 8064 450 7613 6% /tmp
/dev/fs1 8192 8192 0 100%
/dev/fs0 512 512 0 100% /dev/fs0p2
/dev/fs0p1 30976 26532 4443 86% /
/dev/fs0 1024 1024 0 100% /dev/fs0p0
/dev/fs0 32768 32768 0 100%

I would like to remove a couple more things, but I am not sure if their are dependancies in any of your scripts.

/kojak/os2, this is a 353k app. I can not seem to find anything that uses this, can it be safely removed?

/nto/bin/pdksh, I am not sure what this is. Is this a flavor of ksh? It is worth 140k

I might remove picframe and go to a web based one. My server within the same network. Other than the three files in /nto/bin and the images directory at /kojak/pics/ are there any other files for this? This is worth another 200k.

Since ntpdate is not working right, if I could figure out how to set the date and time manually, I might remove this for another 430k

thanks!

Set date/time works fine except I get the time always 1 hour behind. I tried to change time zones, daylight savings feature and it didn't help. Any suggestions. In addition to that one of my Audreys changes CONTRAST level to UNACCEPTABLE after it wakes up from hynbernation. So I need to set 'contrast 15' in order to get a good visibility. Does anyone has the same problem?

It seems the Time & Date problem is resolved by a Reboot. Most changes in Config require a reboot. If Audrey cannot find the time server you have a problem with your internet connection. The time server I used is in /kojak/Datebook.sh for use with ntpdate and /config/Timeserver0 for use with setitime. It's still the same from FINAL update from 3COM.

lars69,
</kojak/os2, this is a 353k app. I can not seem to find anything that uses this, can it be safely removed?>
I don't have the image running at this time, but you can remove this one, must be the remainder of a failed mount exercise.

< /nto/bin/pdksh, I am not sure what this is. Is this a flavor of ksh? It is worth 140k>
Be careful removing this one. I think you're right, it could be a flavor of ksh. You could change the name and see what happens. If nothing bad happens you could remove it, but it may have some adverse effect.

< I might remove picframe and go to a web based one. My server within the same network. Other than the three files in /nto/bin and the images
directory at /kojak/pics/ are there any other files for this? This is worth another 200k.>
Picframe is the executable and /kojak/pics is the directory I used for the example pics. Remove them.

< Since ntpdate is not working right, if I could figure out how to set the date and time manually, I might remove this for another 430k>
I disagree removing this one. If it doesn't work you have to Reboot after making changes with the Time & Date Cfg or you have a network problem. Again for rare occasions only when the timeserver is busy or under maintenance this feature should work at all times with a properly setup connection with the internet. However if you want to reclaim space you can reactivate Audrey's original Time & Date, I left it in on purpose. (setitime is only 7k)
Check /kojak/go, /config/rm-apps, /config/startup-main and /config/startup-warm and uncomment any line with setitime and it should work again at boot. You'll find it in 2 or three of these scripts, but I don't have this image up and running and cannot check myself at this time. If you have a problem reactivating setitime let me know and I will help you out.

Setting up Audrey as a dialup router certainly is possible with my version USB1-1 . All you have to do is download the full tcpip stack script from my Audrey Repository and set Dialer on auto dial, assuming the included route command allows you to setup the routing, but it could work just like that I believe, because Dialer sets up the proper route for outgoing traffic.Yoy eihter need a second IP from your provider or a proxy server.
In version 4-0 I don't know, why not just try, route traffic from your PC through Audrey as the gateway and set Dialer on auto dial. It very well may work out of the box. In the past I have done the same with Windows 95 that wasn't setup as a router either, but it worked when I had a second IP from my ISP. It should work with a proxy server in Audrey.Interesting idea. Please come back with the results here. When I have time I will check for a proxy server in the web for QNX 6.0, should be available somewhere.

About the cyrillic language support. If it's available for QNX it should work on Audrey too. Have you checked the QNX web site or do you have access to the QNX RTP?

I use an ethernet connection, but when I flashed V4, I had a phone line plugged in for ACID. I've decided to no longer use ACID, so I unplugged the phone line tonight. Now, whenever phpostal tries to check mail or I launch Voyager, the dial-up window pops up and of course can't connect. I do have my settings set to use DHCP, but Audrey doesn't seem to recognize that I have an ethernet connection.

bretb,
When Dialer shows up your internet connection is dead.
Do you use a USB hub? If so you have to reboot Audrey after unplugging the USB hub for 30 seconds once. If you have no USB hub and changed nothing in the connect mode (modem or USB) you should power Audrey down for 30 seconds and the network should come back after the boot. If dialer shows up again your internet connection is still dead or you are on modem connect.
Click USB Connect twice in Shelf/Config and reboot. If your internet connection is still dead you have a problem with your USB adapter, your wiring, your ISP or anything else not related to the image itself.

Thanks Jukebox. I don't use a USB hub. I shut down, unplugged Audrey, unplugged the USB adapter from Audrey, waited a minute, plugged it back in and plugged in Audrey, still had the dialer. Shut down and unplugged everything again, waited a minute, then plugged the USB adapter into the other USB port and plugged in Audrey again. That did the trick. Thanks for the tip.

For the time being I have choosen for uncompressed downloads of the following apps in addition to the ones included already:

Directions are improved based on problems others have had. I hope to get some feedback about this feature. It's my goal to make a hacker out of every Audrey user.

mclom,
About your post if Audrey can be setup as a dial-up router. I found a QNX caching proxy server here: http://squid.nlanr.net/Squid
You can download the source code only and you'll have to compile the app yourself. It is also available as Contributed Software at QNX.com. A caching proxy would be over kill, but you can disable the cache and possibly you can leave it out your compile. I don't think other proxy servers are available for QNX. This would enable you to setup Audrey as a dial-up router. Let me know here what you do.

How do you quit the damn thing?

Touching the lower left hand corner of the screen I think may have brought up the shelf at some point (I can't remember and haven't launched it again yet) but I also just "touched" a more central area of the screen and that seemed to increase the rate of rotation between the two default pictures. However, it seems as though that also sort of maximized the app, and then I couldn't figure out how to get out of it. audrey buttons didn't do anything, random presses to the keyboard didn't seem to do anything... Currently the only supported USB nics by QNX are klsi and pegasus. Probably the upcoming new version of QNX will do a lot more with USB and I will implement it as soon as it becomes available.

Streaming from mp3.com works fine, you have to change something on your web server, but I don't know what.

For streaming media you have to use the <embed> tag on your web page. For example <EMBED SRC="my.mp3">. Sometimes, especially with stripped down web servers you may have to do some extra configuration there too or use an up to date other server. Just try the <embed> tag and work your way up. It very well may work on the first try.
