Could someone who's using ACID as a client and CALLER ID SENTRY post what brand and type of modem they're using. It looks like I'm gonna have to buy a new modem (this is nuts...I just got cable broadband...) and I want to make sure I get one that is CALLER ID capable. I guess you can tell this has become some sort of quest...

Thanks,

If you're going to buy a new modem anyway, consider getting an external one. That way you can hook it straight to Audrey's serial port and get reliable caller ID info using ACID on the Audrey. Search this board on how to get the external modem to work with ACID. Check pricewatch.com for modem prices. Be sure to get a "real" modem (not a winmodem) and make sure it can do caller ID.

Yeah Sketchy,

I thought about that, but I'm trying to avoid the countertop clutter. I need a PC modem so I can go the CALLER ID SENTRY route.

Is anyone using a PC based modem with CALLER ID SENTRY installed on the PC? What type of modem is working.

TIA

AudreyX3,

I am using the setup you are talking about. I have one PC with CallerIDSentry running as a server, several with it running as a client, and several Audreys running ACID.

The modem in the server PC is a Creative Modem Blaster Flash56 PCI DI5630. This modem was bought a long time ago so I don't know if you can get the exact one off the shelf.

Good luck,
dill

Thanks Dill,

I'm about to give up. I have Caller ID Sentry installed on my WIN 98 PC, with my new USR internal modem, and it's catching less than half the calls, maybe not even that many. As far as passing the data to ACID running as a client on any of my 3 Audreys there's no hope. I run CALLER ID SENTRY, I check ENABLE NETWORK SERVER SUPPORT, I use the right modem init string, and zip. No communication between the server and the client. I just can't get it to work. I have good phone wiring...everything is home run to Type 66 blocks with no daisy chaining. My windows shares work fine, I store Voyager cache on the share, I know the network side is okay.

I have also tried using ACID as a stand alone program with the crummy Audrey modem...I got something other than RINGING NO DATA only 2 times out of about 200...I've tried the top jack, the bottom jack, a phone plugged in, no phone plugged in, reversed the two center wires...I've run "rsmodem" and qtalk and get OK. I call in and see RING...RING...no data.

Every phone jack I've tested has no problem with commercial CID boxes or phones.

Dill, are you running Win 98?

the modem that is built into the Audrey works perfectly. I got ACID2.2 working without any problem. But, u might have gotten an Audrey with a BAD modem. I had a friend that got an Audrey with a bad modem before. With ACID 2.2, i set up most of my friends name enter in the database with corresponding wav files recorded from the Audrey. So, whenever one of my friends call, ACID will announce their name. Pretty cool.

You can buy old slow external modems with caller ID on eBay for $15 or less and use them for caller ID alone. They work like a charm with Audrey or any of my other PC's with acid or CallerID Sentry depending on the platform. No clutter, because you cannot even see them. For so little money anyone can solve this problem with Audrey's built in modem.

Sketchy,
I think I have a great new feature for a new release of acid, at least if you're planning one. You may have heard of the TeleZapper I believe it's called. Rado Shack sells it for $49 and it emits a tone when a Telemarketer calls mimicking a disconnected line. After a while your phone number will disappear from the lists their computers calls to disturb you at dinner time. At least it's advertised to do so.
I believe it could be easy to add this feature to acid in a new release and will make acid the greatest app for Audrey available (which it is for me already). I'm curious if you're able to do this as easy as I think it is.

I saw Telezapper on his "can it be done?/possible todo" list on his page. It would be a very cool addition, if it could be done.

I hate me too threads LOL but in this case I agree. Acid with something resembling Telazipper ;) would be an app for Audrey making her worth the price of admission alone...... or at least worth having one dedicated to just that.

Mine right now with ACID & the palm syncability is useful :) This would make it wonderful.

I'd like to do it. Many people have suggested it. The problem is that I don't know of a way to emit voice data (i.e. the 3 SIT tones) down the phone line. It's not a "voice/data" modem, it's just a data modem. Without the ability to go into voice mode, I think that any sound samples you sent to the modem would be interpreted as data to be D/A converted. Of course I've been wrong many times before.

The possibilities improve with an external voice modem on the serial port, but then that limits the universal usefulness of it. Is someone willing to look into how this all works? I'm no modem expert by any means, and I'm a bit short on time these days.

What would rock is the source code to rsmodem (the modem driver). Can anyone pull some strings out there? :)

AudreyX3, did you ever try making Audrey the server and CIDSentry the client, just to see if they can communicate via that port?

Also note: If we figure this out, it opens the door to all kinds of cool apps like voicemail, speakerphone, email readers (it could dial your cell phone and do text-to-speech on the email you just received), etc.

Sketchy,
As so many others my built in modem does nothing with acid and I use an external voice modem for acid alone. It was worth the $15 I paid on eBay.
I was thinking about a Telezapper feature in acid that I can use with the external modem feature in acid. That's what I think wouldn't be too difficult to do. I never thought about adding it for the internal modem, because I can't use the internal modem for acid.

Well, I'm less excited about working on code for an external modem since everyone will have a different one, but hey, that's why the ACID source code is available. If anyone adds a new feature like this, I'd be more than happy to help integrate your code with the original source, so that we keep the number of versions floating around to a minimum.

AudreyX3,

Yes, I am running Win98. I have noticed that since we moved, I get a lot less actual calls showing up with this setup (I seldom missed one at the old place). I think it may have something to do with the signal received from the phone company as well as the other factors you mentioned. Maybe you can try one of the $15 external modems on your Win98 box.

I am not real big on answering the phone anyway. If it doesn't show up on my screen, I check my cordless CallerID screen whenever I find it. So it is no biggy for me I guess.

Good luck,
dill

Hey Sketchy,
You are at least overestimating my capabilities.. Ever thought about making a shareware version with these new features? I would buy a license for a Telezapper feature in acid.
