Even though i have a working USB ethernet adaptor ($12 at shentech.com) I've decided (due to wiring issues) to have my audrey just connect via the modem.

I have my kcrontab set up to check for mail at apropriate times (just before I wake up, and jsut before I get home from work) and it works just fine (nice flashing lights when I come home).

however it appears that it only 'checks' for mail and doesn't download it. I have to click get new mail (and initiate another call) to actually read the mail.

I tried running maild from the command line and it didn't appear to do anything (not even dial up) why is that?

I've read through over 6 months of archives here and can only find one other thread that asks the same question with no replies.

One clue I got was to use fetchmail and sendmail together, which appear to be pretty bulky.

any other ideas?

the only other option I have is to write my own pop3 client that dumps the files into /data/email/in/ and then flash the LEDs.

Wow, the response was overwhelming!

since noone here will help (even after I threw you the $12 USB-ethernets link)

I have QNX now on my windows partition so I'm able to compile stuff just fine.
I'm going to compile fetchmail and then use that with a fallback mta I'm going to write myself to deposit the mail in /data/email/in

once I get it all set up I'll put links to downloadable files here

One thing I don't understand, original Audrey mail did always fetch the mail for me when checking. The same goes for phMail. What mail client are you using?

I'm using the original Audrey mail connected to a earthlink account via pop

I will admit that I only ever tried the out of the box mail client, and have not checked since I updated to UpdateWithShellPlus image.

I'll check again tonight and post results here tomorrow.

thanks for the reply!

One addition to this. Audrey's mail did fetch the mail for me but by default it left the mail on the server and my PC got the same mail again, a feature I was quite happy with. However I've read a post here too telling you how mail can delete your email from the server. Change a 0 in a 1 or vice versa in a file in /config I believe.

Doh! must have been fixed in the update!Doh! must have been fixed in the update! (modified 0 times) bungee

I checked again last night and indeed now when it checks for mail it does indeed download it - whether I'm using my Dialup or ethernet connection. so everything is sweet! thanks jukebox for making me look one more time, this is a much better solution!

I'm pretty sure I did see the behaviour I mentioned (just checking and not downloading) but that was right out of the box with no updates, I guess that was fixed in some of the updates (or I was mistaken)

this thread mentioned similar behaviour
http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=3Com_Audrey&Post=1056

Even though my problem is now solved, I sure can see a need for fetchmail and a lightweigt fallback mta program to deliver the mail - that was you could do IMAP and other more secure mail fetching. I'm real close to getting fetchmail compiled (just need dn_skipname, which was thinking of just stubbing) so if anyone needs it get in touch.

thanks again jukebox, you saved me a bunch of work!
