USB modem - possible?

New MessageUSB modem - possible? (modified 0 times) bungee

I know that I can just plug a serial based modem into my audrey and use that, however I'm using that port for my palm hotsync cradle.

I've found USB based modems like this one (cheap!)
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=WS-5614UVSG

however I know nothing about USB, is it possible to get a /dev/ser1 kind of entry in /dev for a device plugged into one of the USB sockets? I thought USB was just a Universal Serial Bus, and I have seen USB->Serial adapters although I do not know how much the underlying OS needs to support it for it to work,
will there be a /dev/usb1 that I can connect to, will it be totally different?

I'm trying to get ACID working at the same time as dialup and think the quickest solution would be to have two modems, one for dialup and one for callerID.

Ideas?

Alex

At this time QNX doesn't support USB modems, probably they will in the upcoming new QNX version.
You could slay hotsync when not needed and probably do my hack for the external modem and use both modems. A simple script could allow you to switch from hotsync to modem and back.

jukebox, thanks for replying.

yeah I started to figure this might be an option and dug up a serial switchbox so that I don't need to keep unplugging them.

it would have been really nice to use a USB modem, but it's not looking promising.

Has anyone managed to get the USB DDK for 6.0 - currently I'm getting a syntax error on line 1 of the qrm file (which when you look at it - is becuase is a HTML 404 page!)

if anyone can share it with me I'd sure appreciate it - what I'm trying to do is not that hard, perhaps even I could write a device driver that looks like a serial port and just forwards everything to/from the USB modem, since the modem has a pseudo UART anyway.

I found it! but it appears to be only QNX 6.1 :(

I'm sure you're supposed to have some kind of password for that area, but it appears to work, you need to download the qpk file which is really just a tar.gz
