Initail Software Update Problems - Long, but detailed.
How to get the initial software update to work. + 3 figer salute

I just got a used Aurdrey. After opening the box, I had it up and running on my network in under 20 minutes! Things went downhill quite quickly after that. My network setup is: CableModem -> SMC Baracaide Router -> 3Com 8Port 10/100 Hub -> Audrey. Baracaide is the DHCP server for my network. Audrey set to use DHCP.

Auderey is still stock version 1.00.17.01 :(

I've tried the following list of DNS servers and cold booted multiple times and set the auto update time 5 minutes in the future multiple times as well, but she doesn't seem to want to auto-update the software. List of DNS servers I've tried:

66.17.16.111
66.17.16.112
206.184.77.241

FAQ's I've read and tried the auto update procedure for:
http://www.3rdmoon.com/crusso/audrey
http://www.canoma.com/audrey/sysupdate.html

Also I can't find any reference to the 3 finger salute (Mail, Action, and Browser) in the original docs, and Audrey doesn't seem to know this either. Is this a function of the current version?

My goal is to update to the Final stock version with a shell so I can flash an image and then start messing with stuff. I've had USB1-1 for longer than Audrey and I can't wait to test it out.

Anyone have any hints or insight to my problem?

Are you setting the DNS servers in your DHCP scope on your router or are you using DHCP and trying to hard code the DNS servers in Audrey? I haven't updated over the net so I wont be much help but I don't think you can use DCHP and Hardcode DNS address's.

I have DHCP set on audrey and also set the DNS servers on Audrey as well. Right now I have the DNS servers on audrey removed, and I'm using Audrey to reply to this message. Looks like it's time to reconfigure the firewall and see what happens the other way.

Geek,
You should hardcode the dns servers in your router, and then restart the audrey. Test the correct dns resolution by trying to browse to 3com.marimba.net and marimba.3com.com (or is it 3com.marimba.com and marimba.3com.net). One of those two pairs should resolve to the spoofed update server. Once this works, then set the auto-update time and turn off the screen. The three-finger salute won't work until the first update successfully completes.

Hope this helps.

Went back again and set 66.17.16.12 to both primary & secondary DNS servers on the router. Using my PC, the only one I can get to resolve to the update site is 3com.marimba.net. None would resolve before that. I'm going to try and get audrey to auto update again, but I wonder if 2 of the servers need to resolve in order to get this to work.

One other curious note: Audrey hasn't successfully gottent the time from the interntet yet either.

I also tried last night to directly connect Audrey to the cable modem, but I only got an error about the network card not working correctly. I suspect that this may be a problem that Audrey's MAC address doesn't match that of the PC I originally connected when setting up the cable modem. The router clones the MAC address of the original PC I setup.

Glad to know that the 3 finger salute isn't going to work until I get the update done.

Update:

This is wierd, I can get two different PC's to resolve 3com.marimba.net to the update site (Router has 66.17.16.112 for primary/secondary DNS), but Audrey can't find the server.

I've also tried adding the 66.1.16.112 in Audrey's settings as well but it doesn't seem to make a difference about finding the update site. Other surfing seems to work fine on Audrey though.

When I initially updated my audrey (back when TigerDirect first got them) I believe I initially used scythics server. To get her to update, though I had to take her to work and connect it "directly" to the internet, just after the router and on the same level as the firewall. I also gave her a public IP address...she wouldn't update via modem, nor my lan at home behind a cisco ISDN router.

What I would recommend, since you can't connect directly to the cable modem, is to give the audrey a static IP address in the same subnet as your DHCP scope, and disabling dhcp on the audrey. You might also want to turn off DHCP on your router all together, because (memory fuzzy) I think that the audrey trys to find a dhcp server even if it is set to a static IP.

I am a newbie and struggled with this exact issue just today.... I am behind a NAT firewall (LinkSys) and did all you had done but I did not have the luxury of changing the DNS info as my ISP uses PPPoE. Anyways, the DNS etc is all dynamicly assigned. To get the updates to work, I had to configure Audrey with a static IP etc and manually applied the two 66.17.16.112 and 111 DNS adresses as explained in this thread. BUT, this step was crucial and all other attempts beforehand failed. If you are using a similar firewall/sharing device, configure it to place Audrey's IP in the DMZ (demilitarized zone). Put Audrey to sleep after reset and it worked!!!! Now I can play and benefit from all the hard work done by others, developing real world uses for this little toy. Expect to hear lot's more from me as time passes. Thanks to everyone!
