I've been reading up on CueCat hacks. Thought I would see if anyone knows how to use the CueCat with Audrey or any barcode scanner. I was looking to see if the Audrey could use a barcode scanner to scan products/UPC labels that would build a grocery list or CD collection. The CueCat is detailed on http://airsoldier.com/~cuecat/ or by doing a quick search on Google. The CueCat was a free barcode scanner given away a RadioShack. It uses a serial connector...but appears to work well with a USB adaptor sold at RadioShack for 10 bucks. Not sure how the Audrey USB interface works.....or any USB interface works. Is this worth a look?

Cheers.

The cuecat barcode scanner is considered a "wedge" device. Which means it goes between the PC's Keyboard port and the keyboard itself. That way, when you scan a barcode, it's the same as if you had typed the contents of the barcode(characters) on the keyboard yourself.

Considering that the keyboard is IR, I have no idea how you would interface the keyboard part of the curcat to the Audrey's IR input thingy at the bottom of the audrey. Probably is relatively simple, it will just take some trial and error to see if the wires coming out of the IR "eye" are equilivant to the wires coming out of cuecat (and the small matter of getting them connected in the right order).

Good Luck, If you have any success, please post it.

Sorry, I failed to mention that I was talking about the PS2 port version of the cuecat and not the serial or USB version.

Just though I'd clarify.

I know it's years later, but I thought I'd add this for the record:

The USB cuecat works with jukebox's QNX Audrey image with USB support (http://www.prins.net/audrey/).
Once the image was installed and booted, I enabled the USB mouse via the "wm popup" (press Paste+Enter). That got the cuecat working, amazingly enough.

Now onto writing that kitchen inventory software...
