Idea for automating enhancements
reduce typos, no ftp, choose Audrey functionality

Need:
Audrey capabilities are multiplying rapidly now. It would be great if one could just say "yeah, I want that too" w/o having to go through excruciating details once things have been ironed out.

Options:
The marimba update server is intended to give everybody the same upgrade. Since the Audrey is currently limited in space, we can't put every new capability into the latest upgrade - machines would fill quickly. Also, the upgrade server requires a server running specialized software(marimba), which generally means it lives on a low bandwidth machine.

Possible solution: (let's brainstorm, folks!)
We could create a Channel (here he goes again! ) that would be "Update System". This channel generally stays in place. It is an html page that offers the choice of updating the AvailableChannels. The AvailableChannels would have, in addition to the old style URL pointers, a channel for each Audrey feature, such as MP3 playing, and USB keyboard/mouse support. One adds a feature channel, updates it, gets a web page that says basically, "click here to install the feature you just downloaded", and voila! the feature is properly placed in the system, and any additional user interaction required (hopefully none) is detailed on the html page for that feature.

What do people think? Yea, Nay, but change x and it'll be better,...
From the responses I've gotten about the old-style channel server, folks here aren't interested, so I'd need some positive feedback on this, and hopefully some assistance as well.

Thanks for your consideration,
Deviant

I don't have much information about the old channel server. I suspect that the address for that was hardcoded as well, and I thought it might use the same marimba protocol -- not sure though.

I think this is a great idea, especially if it can be implemented without running Marimba code long term.

Actually, I don't believe I need any additional knowledge of the system (always want more though) to get this job done. I already have a Channel Server functioning for myself, and the effort involved in creating the feature upgrade packages would not be worth it for my Audrey(s). However, if many people are interested, then I'd do the work and publish it, so anyone could use it, and anyone could duplicate it. Mostly I need encouragement - this job doesn't pay well. If I had more guinea pigs, html'ers and icon artists, I could get this done much faster.

This setup would not require Marimba at all. In fact, my view of the optimal setup is to strip the pterm shell from the Marimba update to keep its traffic down but preserve its other updating functionality, and have users intentionally choose the shell with the resulting large-file downloads being taken by a large-piped server. I guess original system upgrading could be done by this method as well, but that'd be even more work on my part.

Once I had the system up, I'd use it myself to easily distribute Audrey enhancements to multiple machines rather than doing it manually.

Deviant,

this is a wonderful idea! personally, i have had a few problems with the hacking, and an automated place to get certain updates would be very, very helpful. esp to the less hacking minded...

thanks so much for all the hard work with this, i really appreciate it....

The Feature Server works for me. Currently, I have suicidal's keyboard mapping file (plus Slashdot page) installing with zero user typing - just a bunch of clicks (following instructions), then the final reboot. I've got problems with setting up my Win2k Server DNS - email me if you can help. Otherwise, if you'd like to try adding this feature to your system (and have a pterm shell already), email me. I'm not ready for prime time yet, but could use some testers.

I'd love the channels pages to actually do something besides go to web pages... thats what we have the browser for. I'd like to see one of these channel buttons become a to do list. i know html but not confident enough to go hacking audrey on my own.

tidal, if you, or someone else, wants to create an html-based to do list, I'm sure I can get it loaded onto a channel slot via the Feature Server. slinger supports Server Side Includes (shtml)(/http://alert.udfcd.org/help/tcpip/user_guide/utils/slinger_util.html) and cgi, and the browser supports Javascript, so I imagine one could write nearly anything using html.

This "feature server" is a great idea. Deviant, it sounds like you had some initial success with this.
What is the current status? I'd like to help dev/test.

Many people have removed channel support from their audreys. What about developing some type of package system that would let you install and uninstall Packages. Seems like every *nix distro has its version. surely we can come up with something that would make this easier.

davinci27 - I'm kinda with you. It would be nice to have a feature repository that could be installed. I have a heavily modified Audrey, but my wife's isn't... I don't really want to think about starting over and doing her's from scratch. (I don't want to do a complete CF-upgrade to hers)

QNX RTP 6.1 has some kind of package manager that supports on-line browsing, downloading and installing of software. Wouldn't it be possible to use that?
