Sounds like a fairly common problem with some of the early Audreys. If you've got experience and the equipment for working with SMD ICs, then you may be able to fix it, or AudreyUpgrade.com can fix it for you. http://AudreyUpgrade.com

Sounds a lot like the problem I had with my Audrey. There is a small daughterboard near the flash card area. This board has a pink and white wire leading from it to the CCFT (cool compact flourescent) lamp that lights the display.
I removed the entire motherboard and found that one of the contacts that connects that board to the mother board was never soldered. This board is an inverter that powers the back light and allows you to see what is on the screen.
