PhJuke 1.1 released

I wiped my QNX box a while back and hadn't gotten around to putting it back together, but thanks to Connectix's VirtualPC, I've finally added a few new things to PhJuke. Get the new version at www.midwinter.com/audrey/phjuke.

* If you're using Media Jukebox on your PC, you probably already use its "Analyze Replay Gain" tool to equalize the volume levels on your tracks. PhJuke can now read the analysis results and adjust the volume so your music all comes out at around the same level even if the levels of the original recordings were different. There isn't any support for other MP3 tools' Replay Gain data yet (the data formats are different.) You will need to grab an updated copy of Madplay to use this.

* As promised in another thread, you can now specify a list of filenames for album cover bitmaps. This should please Windows XP people, since they can call their bitmaps folder.jpg and XP will show them as thumbnails.

* Playlist loading is a bit faster.

* At the request of a couple of users, PhJuke will now play ".mp2" files using Madplay.

Can it stream from a shoutcast server?

No, it's designed to play back from an NFS or CIFS mounted filesystem of MP3 files. You'll want a different tool if streaming is your thing.

Hi,
Quick question....
I downloaded the uncompressed version of phjuke to my win98 cifs share (mp3).
Followed instructions on your download page...
Type cd /nto/bin
tar xvf /mp3/phjuke-bundle.tar

Audry replies with:
madplay
could only write 1856 of 10240 bytes
ogg123
could not write no space left on device
phjuke
could not write no space left on device

I know I have about 34GB available on my share...what gives??

Thanks
mp

/nto/bin isn't on your share, it's on the Audrey itself. It sounds like you have a bunch of other stuff loaded onto the Audrey already and there's simply no more room to fit PhJuke and its associated files. Assuming there's nothing on the Audrey you want to get rid of, you will have to install PhJuke on your share rather than on the Audrey -- try "cd /mp3" instead of "cd /nto/bin" and then you'll be able to run PhJuke as /mp3/phjuke.

DUH....what was I thinking. I'm new to the QNX thing but I should have caught that.
Anyway, I got the files to my share and phjuke ran but wouldn't play any songs. They loaded into the playlist but wouldn't play. I think I'm gonna stick with the previous version anyway. There are some features in the new version that I like but there are some features that have been changed.
Thanks for the help

Do you see any error messages if you run PhJuke from a shell window? That's usually the first thing to try if you're having trouble with it. My shot-in-the-dark guess would be that it can't find madplay, or that it's finding an old version of madplay that doesn't know what to do with the new command line argument for ReplayGain support.

There are some features in the new version that I like but there are some features that have been changed.

Can you elaborate on this? What don't you like in the new version?

Koreth,

Is it possible to port these enhancements to the Davici27's version of PhJuke. I got mine from http://www.davinci27.org/audrey/software.html

Thanks!

Koreth,
It's not that "I" don't like the new version. The scroll bar in the playlist was a terrific addition.
In the version I am using all the directory boxes in the left window are all the same size and listed one after the other down the page. In the new version the text boxes are all different sizes and sometimes there is one directory per line and sometimes more. It just seem harder to navigate.
The text box sizes in the sub directories in the previous version seem to be determined by the size of the cover.jpg image, so if I size all my images the same size (150x150) my list stays in a nice neat straight line down the page. In the new version the box size seems to be determined by the length of the directory name, so again sometimes I have one entry per line and sometimes more. It just seem harder to navigate.
I'm sure I could get things to line up nice and neat with the new version but the bigger issue is that I just got my wife into using Audrey and she does not addapt to software changes that well. I know trying to explain that to add all the songs in a directory you have to tap the command button first then choose add all rather than just tapping the all button will throw her into a tizzy.
So I guess the bottom line for me is that I feel the older version is a bit more (end)user friendly and easier to navigate for the non-computer junkies out there

I don't see why not, but that's up to Davinci27. The source code to this version is downloadable from the same place as the executables; anyone is welcome to grab it and modify it as they see fit. I don't maintain other people's versions of the code (they wouldn't be other people's versions if I did!)

I'm considering independantly making 2 changes. But two versions aleady grrr.

We'll see. I'll probably not get around to them. But I do like the app. Damn. Maybe I will

1) Adding an http option for getting directory info and playing - because I can't seem to keep shares up.

2) adding an option to play remotely

Hey guys, I've sold my audrey, so I won't be updating the source tree of phjuke. I'm getting ready to wipe my QNX partition, but before I do I'm gonna post all the source code to my various audrey tools. If someone wants to combine the few changes I made with the PhJuke 1.1 they'll be free to run with it.
