Strange USB networking startup problem

Hi guys!

Just got an Audrey and I sucessfully flashed it (using compact flash) to Final+shell.

However, with final (it came from my ebay seller with Final already), or now with Final+shell, the network startup seems very bizarre. It seems that I have to ping the audrey for it's network stack to startup. Otherwise, it can't seem to get to my DNS server or anywhere else to get going.

So, in summary, trying to access the web after startup does not work until I ping the audrey from another machine. It then "wakes up" the ip stack and works fine. To be clear - the Audrey is not sleeping, it's just the networking that seems hosed. Other machines (not audreys, mind you) on the same network segment work fine.

My USB adapter is from 3com - it's kind of a strange looking oval gizmo, stamped 3com... I don't have the part # handy...

Anybody seen this before ? Anyone know how I can eliminate this issue ? I searched the FAQ, this board and the audreyhacking.com forum without any success...
Thanks for your input.

As a follow-up to my own post - the oval USB ethernet gizmo is a 3com 3C83510P-01

Answering my own post again ... I "solved" the problem by having my Linux machine ping the audrey every 45 seconds or so... It seems to keep the audrey's ip stack/network "awake".

Very strange. Still looking for insights, if there is any to be had. Doesn't seem like there is, sadly.

ptanguay:

Don't feel too bad about it - - it looks like you may have one of the few, somewhat 'rare' original USB ethernet adapters manufactured for the Audrey. Pretty much everyone here has used 3Com 3C19250 or 3C460B, a few 3C460, and lots of other cloned KLSI adapters that can be made to appear as a valid 3Com USB device.

What we did with the other units (way back, when? ) was to physically disassemble them to determine the Ethernet and USB chips inside the device, and then search for utility programs on the Taiwanese chip manufacturers' web sites. We actually got fairly lucky with the KLSI / Kawasaki 10 Mbit and ADMtek / Pegasus 10/100 Mbit units, finding the utilities and using them in a relatively short time.

Anyway, I don't think folks are ignoring you, it's just that not many folks have ever seen a 3C83510, yet. Who supplied your unit?

Thanks for info, Keith. I didn't realize that the 3C83510P was not a commonly used part. I suppose I could try to get my hands on a 19250 to see if that fixes it... It's become less of an issue now that I figured out a work-around.

Nonetheless, I appreciate your answer - I'll keep my eyes open for an inexpensive network adapter replacement.

At this moment (4/23/2003) Ebay has lots of 3C19250s for sale. Just search on "3C19250".
Some have the "Buy it now option" and can be purchased immediately for as little as $6.00 (+4.50 shipping)
$10.50 doesn't seem like much to risk to fix your problem...

r_green, I agree that $10.50 is not a lot to risk to solve the problem, except that I'm in Canada, and shipping is a tad more expensive. But more importantly, I had not come across the $6.00 ones, just the $15.00 because a lot of US sellers on ebay either will not ship up here, or if they do, they still set their auction listings as "will only ship to the US" anyway - so it doesn't show up in my filtered searches. I'm currently emailing with a few sellers to see if they'll ship up here.

Here's a tip for sellers in the US : if you're willing to ship to Canada, make sure to include it in your auction settings. Otherwise your auction won't show up when we search on ebay.ca ... And while on the topic, shipping via USPS is the only way to go - in partnership with CanadaPost, the custom handling fee is only $5.00 (when they do charge it, which is not always), whereas UPS and Fedex always charge upwards of $25.00. This cost is always born by the buyer, but obviously it's a big factor when buying inexpensive items.
