What to do with my Audrey...

Well, I finally pulled one of my Audrey's out of the closet and hooked it up using a USB ethernet adapter.
Originally, I had a 'simple plan'. It was to create a grocery list formatted for the Audrey and host it on my web-server. I would have an Audrey sitting in the kitched attached to a WET11 for wireless broadband internet, and probably another one upstairs for the same purpose. I also wanted to figure out a way to sync calendars, if possible.

However, I was reading another thread and found a link to upcdatabase.com, which caused me to come up with a 'grand plan'. Now I still want to do the site, but I want to hang a bar-code scanner off the Audrey for input, then do an automated lookup on upcdatabase.com and return the results (if any) to automatically populate my grocery list.

It's probably the case of my eyes being to big for my available 'tinker-time', but I have a dedicated web-server with several gigs of free space, I'm a programmer, and I'm currently between jobs, as they say.

So, I guess the first step is to load a new image on this thing. Any suggestions on where to start? Is anyone currently using a bar-code scanner with an Audrey? Does anyone have content they need hosted on a possible upcoming Audrey site?

Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Great minds think alike ;)

The cuecat (sp? Mine are in a box somewhere) usb version does work with some images. My plan was very similar to yours. Load UPCs into a MySQL database and use a webpage/scanner to update the list until printed out and shopped.

I messed a bit with some UPC perl modules and the scanner does work with most bar codes. I downloaded the latest (pretty old) database from the UPCDatabase.com's repository (sourceforge I think) and got the database loaded.

The page will basically look up the bar code, if it exists, show a screen allowing to enter/edit quantity. If not, show a screen to enter the data to add to the database.

That is about where things in r/l got into the way. No real coding done.

Oh, btw, I got my scanner off of eBay. Make sure you get the USB one and not the PS2 version.

I'm seeing 'modified' versions on E-Bay for between $5 and $10. I believe this is the modification that makes the CueCat output standard ASCII text (no driver necessary). So, is it the case that I would not need a special Audrey image to use this scanner?

Another idea I came up with is to use the Audrey as a Coupon Keeper by just scanning them in on the site with my grocery list. My girlfriend and I are fairly avid coupon shoppers for certain items, but we are horrible when it comes to organizing them.

Yes, modified is what you want. But, the stock Audrey won't see it. I believe I got one of Infinity's to see it.

couldn't you just plug the PS2 cuecat into the usb port via a PS2 to USB adaptor?
