Calendar file format
Trying to figure out what the internal structure of the GDBM records are

Has anyone successfully decoded the DatebookDB.gdbm record format? I want to do a one-way sync from my Outlook calendar to the Audrey so that I can quickly check what's going on at a given time using the Audrey instead of booting up a Windows PC and Outlook.

Getting at the Outlook data will be relatively easy, I just need to know how to create a DatebookDB.gdbm that Audrey will be happy with. I've grabbed the file and dumped its contents, but before I spend countless hours trying to figure out what's in there I was hoping somebody else might have already documented its layout.

If anyone has other suggestions on how to accomplish the sync I'm all ears. I don't have a Palm, so using a Palm as an intermediary is out of the question. Besides, I'd prefer to have this run automatically from cron on the Audrey, grabbing a new DatebookDB.gdbm from my FTP server every night.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Has anyone gotten anywhere with the Audrey syncing with Outlook?

It would be ideal if my Audrey in the kitchen could be synced with my laptop and PDA (non palm) via my network.

this would be a great development, i have recently moved from an Audrey/Palm sync situation to a Outlook/Blackberry sync. It would be a major development to enable a Blackberry to Outlook to Audrey move of Calendar information. I'll try to look into this over the holidays.

Cheers,
Rob

just a thought, it may be simpler to port another calendar software that would easily interact with Outlook to the Audrey.

I contacted the people who made the Audrey software and asked if they would be willing to share any info on the datebook format. Heres the reply I got:

Unfortunately, the Audrey datebook format contains many elements that are
indicative of the Palm internal data structured and, as such, were
considered by 3Com to be of a highly proprietary nature. In fact, we were
obliged to sign a separate non-disclosure agreement (on top of another
**very** restrictive agreement) that prevented us from even looking at the
low level code that accessed these structures - even though we had been
supplied with that code in order to build our software. 3Com provided us
with an API which abstracted those structures - pretty paranoid on their
part.

Sorry I can be of no help in this matter.

So I guess we would have to go it alone....

Anyone have the skills to disassemble the format of the datebook? If we can figure that out, it should be possible to export it out of Outlook into that format and either FTP via cron to the Audrey or set a share up on a local PC for Audrey to look for the datebook.

I have started to fiugre out the address book by brute force. I figured out the locations of time/date and next I am going to start figuring out adding a new appointment.

It got me thinking though. Once the format is decoded, does anyone have any ideas how to create the data from the PC side?

My skills arent the best. So I was thinking of a one way PC to Audrey type of system. (ie create the file on the PC and just copy it to the Audrey or set it up as a share on the PC.

Anyone want to lend a hand?

I'd be interested in the same thing. I've been thinking about tackling it from a different direction though.

I know the Audrey can sync over serial to Palm devices. I know that if I sync a Palm to my PC there are converters available which can sync it to other calendar apps(Outlook, Korganizer, etc.)

So... if I can connect two sync applications together, can I go from Audrey->Palm and then Palm->(other) without the use of a Palm device?

I know I can do it with a Palm device, but that's a lot of steps -- especially since I don't normally use one (My Zaurus SL-C760 is not in the same league!) It would be nice if I could do it through the network to some other device which possibly pretends to be a palm. I can run a palm emulator on my PC -- could I network the Palm emulator to the Audrey and use that to sync to Audrey, and then export a file which can sync to whatever calendar app I'm running on my PC?

I'll have to look at Audrey and see if I can find a way to connect the Palm sync s/w to the network. I know it doesn't normally work that way, and w/o source code I may be sol, but I'll look and see if it's doable.

Meanwhile -- Velvis, if you're still interested in the brute force method, I'll help if I can. Perl's a nice tool for those sort of conversions.

Here is what I did to accomplish this -
Palm makes a palm device emulator available for free for development purposes. I used a Palm emulator on my PC, attached a null modem cable to my PC serial port and Audreys serial port and synchronized all data. Then, I simply sync'ed my Palm emulator with Outlook. The real pain is you have to go through every stinking entry in the addressbook on Audrey and select it for synchronization. And then my wife kept adding new addresses to Adurey so I had to go through the whole process over again. It gets the job done though.

I would be very interested in continuing this quest too. If you did this with a Palm Emulator and a serial null modem cable, can you give specific directions and locations of the app for someone new to this?
