I just got an Audrey a couple days ago from Ebay, and I've been trying to get it to spoof since it arrived. It's still at the origional firmware from 2000 and I don't have a way of creating a compaq flas image currently, So I'm quite worred about how to get it updated to the most current + shell

Someone please help me
Thanks

If you are connecting through the usb ethernet.... be sure and disable DHCP in the internet options and give the audrey a static ip address... ie 192.168.1.100 and change both name servers to 63.107.123.66, then press and hold email, action, & browser buttons at the same time. Do that several times over, until the audrey says its up to date. I just updated this one, so the spoofed servers are still working.

I have read through the update instructions at least 20 times. I have set my DNS server to the spoofing server as listed. I have tried the TFS multiple times. I have tried static IP, DHCP, different hostnames including "audrey", and have not been able to get this Audrey to update. My current software rev is 1.01.24.00 RC16, 12/13/2000.

Anyone got any other ideas? I don't want to have to buy a pre-loaded CF card.

Thanks in advance.

Needed to add something to my previous post:

When I do the TFS, the "Please standby" windows comes up for a while, but then another yellow window comes up that says, "There was an error while checking for Audrey's Software Update" and I get no update. Anyone seen this?

Well, I tried one more time with a different spoof server, and it got me to the final software rev. I changed the DNS server again and got the rev with the shell. So, it pays to be persistent I guess. :)

Weird DNS issue...

Just got my audrey... Started trying to update.. Nothing so far...

Try a few spoofs...

Nothing..

Move to the 63.107.123.66 IP... Still nothing..

So I start a packet capture on my main machine...

And I see that Audrey is taking the IP I manually set for it. BUT, DNS requests seem to be going to 63.93.64.20???

I don't remember ever setting that address anywhere...
My cable modem should be handing out 192.168.8.1 as a DNS server, so I'm not sure where that other one is coming from.

They talk abit, on port 53 (DNS), some wierd names in the packets too. ns.dinahosting.com and vs.aparato.net???

No update so far either...

Anyone have any idea what some of this stuff is??? I'm just a tad confused myself... When I manually configure a DNS server, I'm used to seeing him in the packet...

Or if someone knows another DNS server I shoudl try, I'm willing to try that..

Thanx in advance..

desiv

p.s. Think I'll play with my Router settings in the mean time...

OK, never mind..

Still never found out what was stuck, but I just re-configured my cable modem/router away from DHCP and to Static, with his current IP/SM/GW, but with the marimba DNS server.
Then I told my Audrey to use DHCP, and it worked...

I'm all the way up with SHELL, and have root and MP3s playing already!! Yeay!!
(MP3s from an XP share.. No browser http stuff yet.. Getting late.. )
Have to admit..

This is very kual...

Thanx again...

2names what 2 DNS spoof servers did you use?

I have upgraded her to the 1.02.08.01 FINAL, 4/23/2001 but I can not get the shell upgrade.

I have tried: 63.107.123.66, 63.172.195.4, and 216.102.107.227 with no success.

Any help is appreciated, Thanks in advance.

You would ask now...

I can still remember sys64738 to reset a C64, but anything that's happened recently, I forget.. Filled my memory with too much junk earlier..

Actually, I was writing someof this stuff down...

I am pretty sure, the last thing I tried that worked for me was the 63.107.123.66

I have an arrow pointed at that one, so I'm guessing it's the one I used...

For some reason, I had to reconfigure my DHCP server (Router) with a static IP, SM, GW, and the above DNS server, and tell Audrey to use DHCP.
(Manually configuring Audrey was being tricky...)

But after numerous reboots, I eventually got all the updates..

Note: My version says exactly the same as yours. I think the last 2 updates said the same thing. It doesn't say "with Shell" anywhere on the info screen.

But I could get shell after the last update..

Good luck..

I made it !!!

Thanks for your help. I’m not sure why my changes made any difference, but she decided to get the final update and I have the shell.

What I did... (may help somebody in the future)

1. Bypassed my firewall and directly connected to my router
2. Reset Audrey by setting password then letting it fail 3x
3. During setup configured with my static public IP and the DNS as 63.107.123.66 (for both)
4. Disabled mail account
5. TFS to get update .....no success but received and error message rather than the up to date message.

6. Powered her down for 10 min+ repeated steps 1-3
7. Filled out email info with false data (IE: a@a.com etc...)
8. TFS to get update and it retrieved the final update :)

P.S. My Audrey would not actually change the static password unless I powered her off then on, she would accept the new configs but when I verified them they didn’t actually change.
Not sure why it worked this time?

A. My two guesses are no firewall interference
B. False info in the mail profile.

Thanks for your help.

I just got Audrey to do the last upgrade after 2 weeks of trying. I don't know what finally did it either but here's what I did for those who are still struggling with it.

When I first got Audrey I didn't have the USB net adapter so I had her dial in to my Toshiba server. No problems getting on the LAN and the Internet, she started with version 1.01.23.00 RC15 12/7/2000. That was apparently recent enough for the TFS to work because when I set her up for static IP with the spoof DNS address the TFS worked first time and then 2 more times to get me through 3 updates to 1.02.08.01 FINAL.

This version seems to have something that breaks the "easy" spoof because from then on all I got was the "There was an error while checking for Audrey's software update" message as I reconfigured Audrey, the LAN, my router, and my dialup server to every possible combination I could think of with no change.

Got a 3Com 3c19250 USB Ethernet adapter yesterday from EBay. If anybody needs one, seller "Maxiemumdeals" has them brand new in sealed original package, by the way. Plugged the adapter directly into my router, then:

1. Reset Audrey via the "wrong password 3 times" procedure, gave her a static IP with the 63.107.123.66 spoof IP for both DNSs.

2. Put in bogus email setup per ScubaSteve's post.

3. Set her IP up in the router for "DMZ" to place her outside the router's firewall.

4. Entered the date & time then took a deep breath and administered the TFS, she downloaded 3 files and installed the last update.

5. Confirmed same by another TFS after she reset and got the "Audrey's software is up to date" message. (shell works now too.)

Conclusions? All I can say is keep trying different things. I suspect that the Audrey reset and putting in a fresh configuration helps. Removing firewall protection per Steve is another tactic that makes sense. Everyone's configuration of equipment, LAN, ISP, etc. is different so there seems to be no one solution that we can isolate. Going to Ethernet from dialup worked for me but obviously others in this thread had different results.

Speaking of the others, my heartfelt thanks to ScubaSteve, Desiv, 2names, and all other posters to this thread. Knowing that others were eventually getting there kept me working away at it until I did too.

Thanks to Chris Russo for his collection of Audrey hacks and thanks especially to Jason Roysdon for hosting the DNS spoof and update servers that we're all using.

I never got to the + SHELL (I never saw that anywhere...) it just says FINAL...

so I flashed a CF card and put Inifinity on it... (shrug) which also took a little twiddling...

Now that I got it all working, I discovered my Modem Port is toasted.. Bleah.. time to fix that...

(although the 333MHz mod works nice..)

Which brings up an interesting question:

Now that I can re-flash from whatever - do I need to update th firmware first or does reflashing do that at the same time?? Anyone?

You do not need the updates if you have already flashed it. The final DNS upgrade provides you with root access to the shell. So you can modify Audrey. You simply took a different route of creating a CF image in place of the DNS upgrades.

-- Commaniac, glad my post helped, I too struggled for several days. know she is modified and working perfectly.

I have tried al the Spoof DNS servers that I could find without success. Does someone know of current working spoofs or servers.
Or even beter where I can find the upgrade data so I can setup my own spoof and server on my local network .

Thanx in advance

63.172.195.4 should be a working spoof address.

Flashing Audrey with a new image is the easiest way to go to upgrade your Audrey though. Pre-imaged CF cards are available on the net, including our site at www.AudreyUpgrade.com

It looks like this IP isn't working.

root@firestarter:~# nslookup
Note: nslookup is deprecated and may be removed from future releases.
Consider using the `dig' or `host' programs instead. Run nslookup with
the `-sil[ent]' option to prevent this message from appearing.
