What do you do with your Audrey?
Sharing ideas about how to use an Audrey

I want to know what people use their Audreys for.

I use mine primarily for listening to streaming audio (RealPlayer and MediaPlayer) and with VNCViewer to monitor the PC in my basement. Not very creative!

I have two units: I hack on one, and when its stable I take the other one out of service and hack on it.

I have several (my g/f might say "too many") but since they are extinct...

Keep one by the bedside for mp3/streaming-radio and checking the weather for the day.
Another sits in the living room for mp3 playback.
Another sits by the PC for hacking.
A couple of more in boxes waiting to be "deployed" or maybe overclocked.

Ultimately, I'd like to pull together an "image" that does all of the above
with a pure "finger" driven touch interface and/or channel knob. Don't want
to use the keyboard or the stylus. Shouldn't be too hard, but probably need
to reformat some of the web content onto local pages off of my local PC web
server.

An ultimate goal is "whole house synchronized" mp3/streaming playback.
Since Audrey hiccups on mp3 playback whenever the screen is touched, I'll probably
invest in a couple of slimdevices squeezeboxes and simply use the Audrey
to control them.

Please let us know if you "pull together" the image you described.

I shout at mine a lot as it's never worked properly since I got it. That said, I think it's almost at a semi stable state. I plan to use it as a front end for a music server. The server is running BeOS & all the music will be selectable through the Audrey Browser. I will use the other apps as well, email calendar etc & sync with a Palm Pilot.

If however it continues to hang & play up, it will become a very expensive door stop!

Shame.

I currently use 3 Audreys as an mp3 playback system, streaming from an XP box. Each Audrey is plugged into a stereo in a different room. The built-in Audrey speakers sound pretty hideous by themselves, but piped into a stereo the audio sounds great. I don't mind the slight hiccup caused by touching the screen, since I tend to select a big list of songs or audio book files and just let them play through. My wife plugs headphones into the Audrey in our bedroom and listens to audio books to lull herself to sleep.

We are currently in the middle of home remodeling, but one of my goals when I have more time is to rewrite the mp3 player to include telephone and intercom functions. Incoming calls would mute the music and the Audrey would become a speakerphone. There is also a webcam driver available from QNX.com which I have not had time to play with either. If it works, I want to be able to view who is at the door and make video calls over the internet.

I'm interested in the speakerphone possibilities...

Only issue I see here is that since USB is limited distance (15' without a booster??), you'd have to have your Audrey pretty close to the door so the camera could see them. Another option might be a standard RCA camera to a video capture card in a PC (or an X11 wireless cam to the capture card, but watch out for WiFi (802.11b) interference) and then you can stream that to to the Audrey.

Some of the systems (I got a low end B/W system a Costco, supports 4 cams with Audio and motion sensor a bit a go) also support triggers. So you could hook a relay to a serial or parralel port, and trigger something (launch Audrey video/audio 2way??) based on motion detection, or just do something similar off of the doorbell.

Of course, if you have 2 or more Audreys, you can mount one on/near your door for the cam stuff, and the other one could be the remote end.

Or the remote end could be a home theater PC. With a tuner and a capture card (or just a streamed source), the audrey video could pop up in a PIP window on your TV. If you multicast, you could have it pop up on all your PCs.. Hey.. er.. Going too far now?? Sorry..

It's too bad the CF slot isn't better supported. A CF WiFi card and a USB camera would make a nice remote monitoring system.

Heck, I just got my Audrey playing MP3's.. :)

I'm so jealous. I'm in awe of what you guys mentioned that you can do with the little baby Audrey! I had no idea! I thought it was only good for e-mail and slight web browsing. WHERE have I been??!! Guess I'm just jealous... I wish I were more Audrey/computer savvy! I'm the kinda girl who swoons over computer "geeks!" *smile*

I've got 4 Audreys - 2 have been taken out of service for the moment, to be put back into service IF I can get java-based video streaming working on them (big IF) or find some other uses. I use one of the remaining two at my desk for development/hacking and it is my ACID server (network-wide CallerID), and the other is in the family room next to the audio/video gear where it is used for web-based control of those devices. I also have a Slimp3 in there and Audrey is used to manage that from the Slim Server web page if I don't use the Slimp3's remote. All my music is ripped into a server. A HTPC project will be coming sometime later this year, I expect, and that may spell doom for the Audrey

My internal web server and Homeseer are all tied together and I've got custom Audrey web pages set up for one-touch audio/video control a la AMX, etc. I'm just not happy about not being able to see my streaming camera feeds on her, but then again, they'd probably fill her up so fast she'd crash after a few seconds. I can view the snapshot-style webcam stills until she fills up her RAM. Audrey also announces CID callers' names and shows their pic, shows when we have vmail waiting, displays house status info, and allows home control of lighting, sprinklers, fans, and other things I have tied into the "system".

johannn, as far as sync'd MP3-playing, you'll probably never get all system to sync so they sound like they are tuned to the same radio station because of delays in both the server and the local playback buffering and network traffic, not to mention Audrey's poor MP3 playing capabilities if it has to do anything else. The best way would be to have an amp/receiver in every room that could select the audio source, and feed sources from a computer-controlled matrix switch (using Audrey or RF or IR) via local FM broadcast or audio cables... even the Slim Server, which says it can sync playback, won't work with mixed players or anything except the Slimp3 or Squeezeboxes. I use it with Winamp on my systems all the time and even though they are configured exactly the same, they are never in sync.

And as far as two-way voice on Audrey, it would be nice but her current processor and limited RAM/flash would make that pretty difficult, while still doing other things. Heck, they haven't even got PC's doing intercom functions yet, though it should be do-able using VoIP of some sort. Pretty bad when you consider all it takes is a cat5 cable and some $20 intercom boxes (or RF units). Guess they think that more than one or two PCs in a house is still cutting edge!

Huggy,

Which web skin do you use for controlling slimserver remotely on the audrey? The ones I tried recently didn't work very well.

Is it possible to stream from iTunes to Audrey? I posted a separate message to the board. Should've looked here first. =)
