Connection Nightmare

I've got connection problems!

I've always had to trigger a Disconnect in the Action Palette after sending or receiving mail. Otherwise, Audrey just stayed online.

The following occurred after an electrical storm.

At first, the Audrey wouldn't disconnect properly from the phone line. After getting mail or browsing, I needed to physically remove the phone cable from Audrey's jack in order to "hang up the phone". Otherwise, even if I triggered the Disconnect button in the Actions Palette, Audrey would squawk that noise that signals the phone's "off the hook".

Now it no longer recognizes a dial tone.

Since Audrey was able to communicate via modem once after the electrical storm, I assumed that, rather than a critical component having been fried, perhaps only a file was corrupted. I thought that upgrading the software might help (this Audrey was never updated. Its version is 1.0.1.23.00RC15, 12/7/2000.) and so, I bought the recommended Audrey USB Ethernet adapter, hooked up to a friend's broadband, and followed tdemark's Download & Update directions.

No upgrade occurred. Probably no real connection either. The link light ignited and sometimes the activity light but always an error message.

Should I resort to flashing? I was looking forward to updating per the download procedure. Can anyone tell that the problem is greater?

It is a 3com USB Network Interface Model No 3c19250. It is working now. I can get to the web and the time updated itself. Currently the only problems I am having is that It cant find the update server. I have no idea if they are still working. I am using 63.172.195.4 for a DNS on both the primary and secondary.

If I force it to update it locks when it gets to an error screen.

The update isn't life or death... Adrey appears to work but the phone modem doesn't hear the dialtone. I suspect that this may be an internal problem with the modem but is there any chance that there is a software issue that the latest update could cure?
