Upgrading to InfinityUltimate (from the original Audrey installed software from 2000)

I am looking to upgrade my Audrey to from the original barebones version it came with.
I have seen all kinds of special preparations being made to the image files which are noted as necessary for getting
a good image onto a CF card for the Audrey.
In going through these steps I found that the files that I was attempting to prep were CF files already(infinityultimate.cf.zip).
My big guess is that since these files are already cf that I can just format my card for FAT, then drop the renamed CF file onto the card (on my XP machine) without doing any preparations(?) - then load the CF to the Audrey.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated as I really hate to do any guessing on this.
Also in general... lets say the Audrey crashes during the upgrade or doesnt like it for whatever reason.. Can you still take a corrected image and load that? or do you only get one shot at this?
Thanks,
Jeff

I was able to upgrade my image to Infinityultimate 1.1a, without knowing much about this stuff.
These were the instructions I followed:
http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=3Com_Audrey&Post=1974&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0Session&Session=

and especially the info at the bottom post of that thread (along with instructions at the top as well:

Figured it out. Dug through a lot of posts in the forum.
Basically, it came down to finding the right size of the flash.
The trick to do that is to write a larger file into the flash, then reading that file back to find out what size was read.
mkcf image.cf large.cf 40000000 (assuming you have a 32 meg flash)
ntrw write large.cf j: (j: is my flash drive)
ntrw read whatsizewasit.cf j:
(this will display how large the file it was read, this is the number that you need to expand the image.cf to ie. 32123123)
mkcf image.cf goodsize.cf 32123123
ntrw write goodsize.cj j:
