Does an Audrey fit my needs?

Hey everyone,

I just stumbled across the 3Com Audrey, and thought it might be a good device for me. The main use of this would truly be a bedside alarm clock. Would I need to install a custom image for this? Can an mp3 or other sound file be used as the alarm? Next use would be as an internet browser. Can music files be streamed? I'm not great at very technical hacks per say, but I can follow step by step directions if installing an image is the right method. Also, can any USB to ethernet adapter be used if the Vendor and Device ID's are changed? I was mainly looking at this one.

Is instant messaging feasible as well?

Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!

The Audrey might fit your needs, but it may be more work than you are looking for. If you look on Ebay you should be able to find one that is already imaged, and has the USB Ethernet adapter you need. That adapter that you found will not work for the Audrey. If you are looking for something that may be a little easier to do what you want, there is a new unit coming out call the Chumby that is similar to the Audrey that is designed to be an alarm clock. They haven't started selling them, but they will be available from here http://www.chumby.com/

I've actually come across the Chumby website before, and yesterday I had actually pretty much decided I would get one. I'm hoping for a $150 price tag. I'm assuming that keyboard support will come around at some point, and an internet browser will hopefully come together. It has a lot of potential, since the company pretty much encourages hacking, leaving everything open source and customizable.

I want to get one too, but it seems they keep pushing back the release. I have never used the Audrey as an alarm clock, but I have used mine as a picture frame, address book, browser, mp3 player and more. Its not very difficult to setup if you can follow the guides, but the information is harder to find than it used to be.
