Finally! an update

Ok I had a stubborn one that wouldnt update ( and 1 that updated first try out of the box - go figure)
I am using the 3com USB adapter and a linksys cablerouter
it seems that even tho i put a static ip and dns they audrey was still using the dns of my isp.
I know this cause I used a packet sniffer and watched it happen.

Here's what I did:
turn off dhcp on the linksys router
used a win2000 machine and set up a dhcp server
set the default route to 192.168.1.1 the linksys box
set the default dns to 206.184.77.241 (thanks to whoever this is :)

restart audrey using the password method

** this is the key to my update **
select broadband connection
when you get to the page that has ppp/dhcp or fixed ip:
fill in the HOST NAME (I used audrey) and leave dhcp checked (Mine wouldnt work without the host name)
set the time
go to the browser and try to get to marimba.3com.com
if you can then goto the calendar and set the download sched for 5 min later than the calendar time.

Thats what I did and it worked for me.

Ive been trying to get to this point for 4 days.

After the first update - use the email+actions+browser reboot to finish all of the updates
I hope this helps someone

Bingo. Using a DHCP server works and overrides the crusty old nameserver Audrey was trying to use - putting in the HOST NAME seems to be key. I did essentially the same procedure on Linux - turn off the Linksys firewall DHCP server and temporarily run one on my Linux box. Here is my DHCP config file...

# Sample /etc/dhcpd.conf
# (add your comments here)
default-lease-time 600;
max-lease-time 7200;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255;
option routers 192.168.1.1;
option domain-name-servers 206.184.77.241;
option domain-name "mydomain.org";

subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.100;
}

And here is the command I used to temporarily run the DHCP server on my Linux box:

# dhcpd -d -f -cf /etc/dhcpd.conf eth0

Thanks for the tip. Update #1 is coming right now.

I'd like to try your idea. I have a win ME machine that I assume is a DHCP server since it's gives a DHCP server address when I run winipcfg. Is that correct?
It's plugged directly into the cable modem.

So I set Audrey to DHCP and give it a host name, right?.
Do I need to change anything on the winME machine?
Where do I input the DNS 206.184.77.241 route?
Do I plug the winME and audrey and the cable modem into the same hub? I figure they need to be connected somehow right? Or is there some other configuration ( I don't yet have a router, got one on order)

thanks and sorry for all the questions, I'm a total newbie when it comes to this.

dude! that was the answer! I got a copy of a dhcp server for the extra mac on my network, set it up and turned off dhcp on the router. I set up a password, then I pulled the plug on audrey for about a half hour. When I restarted it, it also asked me to calibrate the screen, which I NEVER got when I pulled the plug for a few seconds... maybe that helped blank the memory too?

Anyhow I did the 3-password thing after that, set up dhcp with the hostname and shut her off again to save the settings (hopefully)... when I brought her back on, I tried the 3com.marimba.net and the marimba.3com.com and they gave the test pages... set the download time and held my breath.

BAM! She updated without a hitch. Haven't tried the TFS yet for the other updates... also noticed she now makes a little sound when waking up from sleep.. nice...

Thanks to all for the detailed instructions!

OK now I'm really getting nuts!!!!!!!

Apparently I'm a complete idiot when it comes to this stuff. But how do I know if I have a DHCP server setup or not??????????

On my main pc when I run winipcfg it shows an address in the DHCP Server spot. Does that mean I have a DHCP server????? I changed the dns on the pc to 206.184.77.241 and now can access the 3com.miramba.net and miramba.3com.com from the browser on my pc.

However, every time I try to use the DHCP setting on the Audrey I get a "Your USB adapter is not setup properly.....ect" error and I can't access anything from Audrey.

Can someone please explain this in language my simple mind can understand?

your windows me box is not a dhcp server. if you are a windows user, you'll need to install a windows nt4/2000 server on your box and activate the dhcp server service on it.

Thanks! At least I won't beat my head against the wall trying that update route any more since I don't have a win2k / nt or linux box. So, I've tried Tony's instructions, Whitemouses dialup, and now this and nothing has worked. So unless someone comes up with a way to get everything back to ground zero or update via flash card I guess I'm screwed. Worst part is that now I can't even get to the net with this unit at all!!!

When I updated, the first thing I did was pull the cord for about a half hour.
What this did was seem to reset it a little more completely, because I got the calibration setup when I re-powered it up. I never got that screen with the normal unplug reboots for 10 seconds or so...

It's a long shot, but maybe it might work.

If you unplug it for less than the recommended 60 seconds (I try to wait at least 30 seconds) it can get the dreaded speaker clicking noises. I recommend always waiting at least 30 seconds, which will 'cure' the speaker clicking, if that has occurred. There must be a cap in there that takes that long to drain, and if it hasn't, doesn't allow the audio chip to reset properly at the subsequent power up.

Unfortunatly for me this didn't work but I did want to let you guys know I found a shareware DHCP server on tucows that runs on any windows platform 95+ and worked fine. I set it up in five minutes. It takes all of it's configuration from the windows machine so you need to set up the spoofed dns server there and it will pass it on to the audrey.

The Product is called MajicDHCP v.7

I have a USB to Ethernet setup with the 3Com "Home Ethernet Gateway" (3C510) with a dial up modem to my ISP.
I've read all of this and I'm still confused (this isn't really my area of expertise).
Can I setup my Audrey and this gateway to get the Audrey to update?
(I'm confused about what to set up in the 3Com gateway and on the Audrey... DHCP vs. static IP is not clear to me.)
I'd really appreciate some advice (especially if you have a similar setup with the 3Com gateway that Tiger was promoting for use with the Audrey.)

I've tried just about everything to update my Audrey. Nothing worked. My unit from TigerDirect runs version 1.01.23.00 RC12, 12/7/2000. I tried configuring my router and setting Audrey's DNS directly (I did put the IP in the DMZ as someone recommended). I can always successfully browse to 3com.marimba.net or marimba.3com.com (thanks to the guys who spoofed the DNS). After the update time kicks in the Ethernet adapter shows activity for about 1.5 min and than nothing happens. I'm going to take a chance and update with a CF card from the image, kindly provided by jayklm. Would anybody have any other suggestions. Any hints will be very much appreciated.

This is what I did first did an automatic ip detect and made sure I could surf the web
through my USB-Ethernet adapter.

Recorded the IP address and other information given in
the network settings of the audrey.

Set a password, made it fail 3 times.
Reset.
When it asks for IP options
enter in the ip address given earlier and other information.
Changed DNS to 206.184.77.241

Then I changed the time to 5 minutes before the next update is supposed to occur
I think it was 3AM so I set the time to 2:55 AM waited 5 minutes and Voila!

It started upgrading, next followed the given recipe and did the Three Finger Reboot
the required amount of times to get the final version of software.

Reset Audrey DNS to my previous (the same as my PC) - Here you could also do the
password reset thing and choose automatic, just check your settings to make sure the dns is not set to 206.184.77.241.

All this was done without doing anything to my linksys router.

This is all from memory from about a month ago and might have some error, but I will update it when I can get in front of my Audrey and step through it.

Hope this helps...

Need Help!!!!Please...

I was able to update to the version 1.02.08.01 FINAL 4/23/2001 through regular analog dialup @ the DNS servers: 206.184.77.241. I then try to update it again for the version 1.02.08.01 FINAL 4/23/2001 + SHELL using the "Three Finger Salute", TFS (Mail, Action, and Browser buttons). But got an error stating "There was an error in trying to update Audrey software". I also tried to update it through the USB ethernet adpatet but got the same error. Can someone please help.

Thanks

ok i think this is my problem. I have an RT 314 and i have tried all kinds of DNS settins in both the router and the audry and any combination of too.

I decided to try majikHDCP of Windows 9x but how do i set it up and how do i point the audrey to see it?

should the audrey be attched to the same computer via another nic or is throught the router ok?

New MessageI, too, can't get my Audrey to update. (modified 1 times) RossVTaylor

I've even bypassed my RT314 router and connected directly to my DSL modem. I checked my IP address and gateway info, reset the Audrey, entered the correct IP info and the DNS address of 66.17.16.111. I also put in a host name, as some have suggested. I've read through all the instructions and have followed them all, except the ones that require setting up a DHCP server (since it seems many have had success without this process).

I can access the web fine, but when I set the timed update nothing happens. Well, I can't say nothing. The USB adapter activity light blinks at the appropriate time, but after a couple of minutes this stops and no update occurs.

I, too, am open to suggestions and help.

Thanks!

Ross

Thanks for all the various tips here.
After trying steadily for 2 days (musta been at least 15 times!) I finally got it!
The 2 important tips for me were:

1. Definitely do the full password reset. That means set the password to active, then try to sign in wrong 3 times. After the third time, it will ask you if you want to reset Audrey. Click Yes and let it go through the whole thing.

2. I'm using a linux box for my LAN network router, but if you're using a linksys or d-link or netgear or anything else, it should amount to the same thing. Put the DNS spoof numbers into the router (I used 63.107.123.66) for the default DNS, then on the Audrey leave DHCP clicked on and put "audrey" in as the name.

Voila!! It worked fine for me. After that I could follow the other directions, 3-finger saluted through assorted updates to the Final with Unix shell. At 2am after 2 days, I woke my wife up and scared the cats with a cheer.

Good luck with yours!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.....unless it's a Microsoft product.

I KNOW exactly what you mean and how that made me feel too when my Audrey did the deal! Shortly afterwards I received a flash card programmed with everything I needed, but that feeling of success after so much pain and suffering... man o man !

Congrats!
