802.11b on Audrey
Symbol's card fits - anyone want to take a shot a writing the driver

Symbol is now shipping an 802.11b compact flash card.
There is a Linux driver on sourceforge for the card.
Does anyone have the skills to try a port? I might
be convinced to donate a card to a capable developer.

Anyone?

Maybe better idea to work on getting USB to 802.11b adapters working since if you fill up the CF card, no way to store files while online. Just a thought. Getting both to work would be cool, tho.

D-Link also makes a CF card 802.11b card see this:

http://www.dlink.com/products/DigitalHome/Mobile/dcf650w

Goes for about $150 I think, alas no driver details or linux drivers...yet.

You can pick one up here if you are interested,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-Details.asp?sku=D700-1074

but it seems it would be easier to hack a way through the usb-to-Ethernet adapter
via hooking up a wireless gateway device or Point To Point Bridge -
Like the WAP11 from Linksys. There is a mode lets one WAP11 talk to another WAP11 to
wirelessly link two Ethernet LANs together. A nice security feature in this mode
is that each WAP11 must specify the MAC address of the WAP11 at the opposite end
of the wireless bridge. When the WAP11 is set to this mode, it can't talk to wireless
clients. However this seems to be an expensive(if you have to buy 2 WAP11's),but doable option.
They go for about $150 each shipped. You can check out their prices here:

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php?masterid=344958&search=WAP11

You can read more about the WAP11 at Tim Higgins site Practically Networked.

Sandman: i'm waiting for the linux driver of the Intersil Prism / LinkSys Atmel 802.11b chipset to firm up. once this is reliably stable, it shouldn't be too difficult for the QNX engineers to port it from linux to QNX, at which point Audrey should be able to use it with the QNX USB device drivers.

I just received a catalog from our friends at TigerDirect, Saturday. They also have the LinkSys WAP-11 for about $159, which is about $40 cheaper than a week or two ago. My local Office Depot is still selling their WAP-11 units for $249...YUCK. keith721

Thought you might like to know... Dell.com has the D-LINK DWL-120 Wireless USB unit on sale for $76.46 and free shipping.
Not sure how well it preforms. I'll be finding out when it gets here.

See: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.asp?Sku=226368&spagenum=2&category_id=4011&keyword=D%2DLink&mnf=&prst=0&prEnd=0&mnfsku=&orderby=&SearchType=AND&customer_id=04&Pageb4Search=search&page=search%2Easp

This unit also uses the Atmel AT76C503A USB MAC device.

Am I right in assuming that we cannot merely re-name a 802.11b USB WAP in a similar fashion as has been done w/ USB-Ethernet adapters by re-flashing it's EEPROM's to a device/manufacturer's name that the Audrey recognizes?

Is part of the 802.11b protocol for these USB dongles implemented in software on the host machine? I have seen some attempts at drivers for these devices over at Sourceforge but they are very much in their infancy judging from the posts.

Waiting for a good hack for the USB WAP's to be done then the Audrey will be relatively portable, however, the prices of RJ45 WAP's are coming down, so perhaps those will become the solution by default. It is pretty lame having all those cables and extra dongles hanging off the Audrey, breaks up her sleek lines.

i don't own an audrey but have been doing some research. need
wireless to work before i make the dive.
it looks to me like there are already QNX drivers for 802.11.

this company has one:
http://www.cds-technologies.com/

also heres some info i found:
http://qdn.qnx.com/support/hardware/neutrino/pcmcia.html
if you look, supposidly there is an x86 QNX driver for
ORinoco cards: devn-orinoco.so
i don't know much about drivers but can this help someone
get wireless working on Audrey without doing the whole
USB->ethernet->WAP.
oh, and i work for Agere so if you need any Orinoco info
i might be able to find someone.

If it is any consolation, I have a pcmcia ornico wirless card running under qnx (on my laptop though) now. It didn't take much work to get it working either just had to assign the right address and IRQ's. I only wish the Audrey had pcmcia.

I own the DLink cf card, it will NEVER work in the Audrey, I don't think I've seen it mention here but Audrey takes a type 1 cf card and the d-link is a type 2 (I have one right here in my hand). Well of course I could make the slot bigger....

I think the only 802.11b solution is the usb dongle thingy.

porting the drivers?

I have a Symbol Spectrum24 High Rate Wireless Networker 802.11b 11Mbps card in my hand right now. It fits in a PocketPC's CF slot.

Unfortunately I'm in between apartments right now and my Audreys are packed away in storage.

Anyway, if I find a place to move soon I'll get the Audreys out of storage, but meanwhile the Symbol card are for real, and they work fine on PocketPC devices, so if they're based on a standard chipset we ought to be able to get them working on an Audrey.

Also note Tastannin: I personally wouldn't mind filling up the CF slot with a wireless card because then I could easily get to my Linux/Samba shares over the 802.11b connection, which would be even better than storing files on a CF storage card. Faster, unlimited capacity, no need to unplug the card.

Hey strawdog, can you mail me? I have a couple questions about your qnx/802.11 setup, if you've got a sec... :)

Cheers,

I picked up a WAP11 today and set it in client mode and hooked it up to my main wireless netowrk. Unfortunately, I can't get the Audrey to get an IP through it. In fact the light on the USB dongle isn't even lit. I wonder it I don't need a null modem cable maybe ?

You need a ethernet cross over cable to directly connect them. Or, you could plug them both into a hub.

re: CDS Technologies....appears their domain listed above http://www.cds-technologies.com/ got snagged by someone else on Feb. 15th. The site www.wilinx.com (their product) is currently down. Is this company still around? The press coverage made them sound interesting.

If you do, or know someone that does...
It would be greatly appreciated by the entire group to get drivers for the Symbol 802.11b CF card. You can find info and linux drivers at the Symbol developer site - http://devzone.symbol.com/

I'm working on a rechargable pack for the Audrey... if we get these drivers running we will have a kick'n little portable PC.
