Slideshow/PictureFrame on Audrey without internet connection?

I was just looking at the various perl/vb scripts for making the Audrey into a Digital Picture Frame. I have an Audrey set up for my parents and the are just using a dialup net connection.

-Is there a way to make one of these screen shows work on the audrey without having net connection? Does Javascript run on the Audrey, if so it should be relatively easy to put something together with it I would think.

-Since memory space will no doubt limit the number of pics we can store, would it be possible to look at pics off of a CF card?

I'll post back if I come up with anything on my own...

Thanks,
Kevin

Can't help you with the cf/cache issue. You can probably set up a symlink to the CF somehow.

Given images p1.jpg -> p10.jpg, you can cycle thru them using only Audrey's built-in web server. It's a bit clumsy, but uses no scripting at all.

Create p1.html -> p10.html and make them look something like this:
(Off the top of my head, some debug necessary)
-----------(p1.html..)-------------------
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" Content="60; URL=http://localhost/p2.html">
<!----- Note the way the quotes are in Content "-->
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<IMG src="p1.jpg">
</BODY>
</HTML>
---------(p1.html)-----------------
Create 1 html per picture (clumsy). Have the HTTP_EQUIV line point to the next html file in the sequence. Have the last one point back to the first. This also works on machines like epods with no internal webserver (use file:// URL). The '60' is 60 seconds between pictures.

You will have to figure our where to save the images/html in order to have the browser find them. I think it's /data/XML.

the root web directory is (by default) /data/XML

inside this directory is the "Channels" subdirectory,
"shell.shtml" and "SystemProfile.shtml".

it was the addition of the "shell.shtml" file that
enables us to access pterm... i think, from the browser,
as user "nobody", who at least has rights to modify
certain key files on the audrey to further enable
(through the Actions Panel) root shell access.

i haven't tried this, but theoretically any file you
put into /data/XML (or in any subdirectory you create
under there) is accessible via the browser using HTTP.

so you could (theoretically) create a subdirectory
"slideshow", put your "p01.html->p10.html" files
and the associated GIFs or JPGs into that directory,
and set "http://localhost/slideshow/p01.html" as
the Home Page for the browser, or make it a Favorites
button. That would (theoretically) begin the slideshow.

if nobody else replies here about doing this, i'll try
it out and report back.

oh yeah...

the CF is a "char" device, versus being a "block" device,
like a disk drive. meaning that nobody (as far as i know)
has yet figured out a way to use the CF as either additional
RAM or as a removeable storage device (like a floppy).

with the singular exception of using the CF to store a backup
image of the filesystem, of course (thankfully!)

there are routines built-in to audrey to enable that functionality,
and i'm sure someone out there is working diligently to figure out
how to exploit that functionality to enable us to get more out of
the CF.

hard to imagine that the audrey engineers didn't allow for that
functionality... we just have to find it or figure it out for ourSelves...

tar can use a char device. I was working on a picture frame using the CF and tar. I got as far as taring a bunch of images (32 megs of jpegs) to my CF and had a script to extract a "random" image from the CF.

Here's another idea (not all the way cooked yet):

Use the channel selector as the way to rotate through various pics. The brute force way would be to do the channel mod and have the index.shtml file load the pic in question. A slightly slicker way would be to transfer the pics to the same /tmp path used the Channel's dynamic content (I beleive this is RAM based, not flash).

The slick part of this is that just by rotating the channel, you can pull up new pics. I beleive that you can also create more than 12 "channels" too. By having a thumbnail version, the filmstrip app would show which pictures would be available.

Part of this thread that is missing is setting up a method for getting the photos on the Audrey.

Given dialup access,
Maybe there could be some solution that would automatically take the photos in the email and place them in a proper directory so they can be displayed. For whistles and bells it would clean the directory up so as not to run out of space.

If there were an app for the Audrey that made it function just like the Ceiva (grandparents only want to watch with out doing anything), it would be the app I’ve been waiting for.

Thanks

FTP transfer to get the images to Audrey.

I've been away for a while, and have the network adapter and broadband now and need to do more research on mounting a share, but it this is too much, upload the images and/or web pages to your ISP server space, then use FTP (instructions on this board) to download the images to Audrey.

I thought that there was a way to play MP3's from the CF, why not images?? This would be cool for someone with a CF camera and if Audrey could be a viewer, but that might be too much to hope for.
