Help - Gemulator and Sandisk SDDR-31
getting this combo to work

Hey everybody,

What is the trick to getting the Sandisk USB CF reader/writer to work with Gemulator Explorer under Win98? It recognizes it as a DOS disk and will not let me read or write images.

Thanks.

Marc

You might have to boot up your PC with the SanDisk reader and a CF plugged it. It puts a little icon in my systems tray. Of course, I loaded the software that came with the SanDisk reader, if you bought it without a CD-ROM, you might be able to download a driver from SanDisk. I have exactly the same combination you have, and it has worked for me.

Hunter,

Thanks for the response. I bought the unit new, with all the software. There was no problem installing the reader/writer and it works fine. I can access a CF card from my camera. The problem is that the READ and WRITE options under the FILE tab in Gemexplorer are grayed out. My directory looks like this:

MSDOS files on a:\
MSDOS files on c:\
MSDOS files on d:\
MSDOS files on e:\
MSDOS files on f:\
MSDOS files on g:\
MSDOS files on h:\
SCSI dev (Yamaha)
Non-DOS floppy on a:

The Sandisk is H, but when I highlight it, I cannot choose to write an image.

I have Gemulator Explorer v. 2.03. Does it matter that I installed it before installing my CF reader?

I am going nuts trying to figure this out!

Thanks.

Marc

Please, somebody has got to help me! How do I get Gemulator to see my Sandisk USB CF writer as a SCSI device? It will not let me write an image to an "MS-DOS" drive.

Thanks.

No. The order of installation doesn't seem to matter (in my situation). I have been successfully using the Gemulator Explorer for a very long time and have been able to make perfect images to CF's and take perfect images off of CF's (for archival purposes only).

(I'm assuming you're wanting to write an IMAGE TO CF)

1) Be at your Win98 desktop.

2) Plug in your sandisk reader. The USB driver will pick up on the installed hardware and put an icon in your taskbar (where the clock is). Ok. Now your computer recognizes it as a drive. Keep in mind that the native file system of windows is totally different from the filesystem of QNX (once you've got that, everything else is a piece of cake, for example if you have a CF with a QNX image on it, it seems to me that in several posts, people expect windows to be able to read a QNX file system. Nope, not going to happen... i'll explain this later).

3) Ok. Insert a CF card into the cf card reader/writer.

4) Verify the light on the front of the drive is lit.

5) Know where the image is in you're computer's file system that you want to put on the CF (example: C:\images\uberBOOT.img) This is the name of my really good basic back up with the Shell hacks, etc.

6) Open Gemulator.

7) Your CF drive will be assigned a drive letter. For example, mine is 'G'. If you need to know which one is your CF, then open up My Computer and the icon for the drive will be the same as the icon of the CF drive program in the taskbar.

8) In Gemulator, DO NOT click on the drive (G) labeled "MSDOS files on G:\", you need to click on the drive that says, "SCSI ctl:2 dev:0 (SanDisk ImageMate II)" (the word sandisk should give away the right drive to use) and the light on the drive should flicker.

9) Then click in the menu for "Write Image file to Physical Disk". Select your image "C:\images\uberBOOT.img". And, the drive should begin writing activity.

10) When the drive is stopped. Remember, the file system is now QNX... NOT MS-DOS (FAT16 or FAT32... FAT stands for File Allocation Table)! You won't be able to use windows to read a single file off of the CF disk!!!!! You will only be able to use Gemulator to strip an image of the entire CF disk onto your harddrive (and windows will see this as one big file, but it's really a filesystem inside of a file in a different filesystem, like a green folder inside of a blue folder, or something).

Now, I hope everyone understands why Windows can't read the QNX files off of a CF image of an Audrey. Because, they use different file systems.

Good luck to ya,

tealcrow7

Tealcrow,

Thanks for the detailed post. I was pretty much aware of everything you mentioned. My problem is that Gemulator simply won't give me an option to select the Sandisk as a SCSI device.

I never see the option "SCSI ctl:2 dev:0 (SanDisk ImageMate II)" you are referring to.

Could it be a driver issue? Or could there be a conflict with another device?

Please help, I'm going crazy!

Thanks.

Same problem here with the same reader. I can access it in Windows but not with Gemulator. HELP!!!

Tried different drivers and installng without the software with no difference.

Just tried it on a ME OS and it used the ME drivers instead of the Win98 ones and worked fine.

Are you using the USB Sandisk CF drive and the windows drivers that come with it?

Right-click on "My Computer", Click 'Explore', Does the Sandisk CF drive show up in the drive listing as a 'Removable Drive'?

Yeah, It's usable in any other fashion except in Gemulator on my Win 98 box it just doesn't show up as a scsi device. On the Me box it does show as a scsi device. I'm still getting the image error but I think it my "Mr Flash" card. It uses the 512 sector size but it's smaller than the Sandisk telling me it's 30330880 on the ME box and 31822848 on the 98' box. Neither seem to work in the Audrey. I tried a 256mb Kingston to in multiple sizes and it didn't work either...

Wish my USB adapter would get here!!!!!!!!

Tealcrow,

I have 3 references to my Sandisk reader in Device Manager. Below is an outline of what I have with driver versions etc. Once again, any help would be appreciated!

Disk Drives
---SanDisk ImageMate II
------firmware revision 1.30
------Target ID 0
------Logical Unit Number 0
------Disconnect, Removable, Sync data transfer all checked
------driver provider (Standard disk drives)
------date 4/23/99

Hard disk controllers
ImageMate CompactFlash USB (SDDR-31)
------driver provider SanDisk Corp.
------date 11/11/99 (I tried updating to one from 2000, then nothing worked)
------4 files are listed:
---------c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbimgm3.sys (Microsoft, v. 5.00.1868.1)
---------c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd (ntkern.vxd)
---------c:\windows\system\iosubsys\usbstors.pdr
---------c:\windows\inf\other\usbstors.inf

USB Controllers
---ImageMate CompactFlash Drive
------driver provider SanDisk Corp.
------date 11/11/99
------2 files are listed:
---------c:\windows\system\iosubsys\usbstors.pdr
---------c:\windows\system\vmm32\ios.vxd (Microsoft, v. 4.10.2222)

How does what I have compare to what you have? As I mentioned, I tried updating the drivers but then nothing works. I searched for information and found 2 interesting articles. First, at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsce/uplink/reviews/a_sandisk.asp the reviewer mentions that a Shuttle Technology MSD Adapter was installed under SCSI Controllers. I never had the install program try to do this. The second site I found mentioned some conflicts with Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5. I followed their instructions, but no luck.

Thanks again.

Marc

Oh. yeah. EZ CD creator is cr@p. Sorry.

I had it installed and couldn't even use my CF reader/writer when I first got it. It over writes some of the Vxd kernel virtual drivers to be able to talk directly to the CD burner. I had to wipe my PC and reinstall everything to get my CF drive to work right.

I totally forgot about this, sorry dude. If you look on the Sandisk website (i think that's where i read it), you'll find where they recommend to install a patch for the Adaptec driver software. Well, in my case the patch didn't do any good. So, I just formatted and reinstalled everything.

Good luck,

tealcrow7

tealcrow, et al:

sounds like what happened to my Win98SE system, after attempting to install the SanDisk USB CF reader software. Lost my MBR, and both FATs. never figured out where they went, just presumed the SanDisk software install did it.

I am running Windows 2000 Pro with a ZiO Card Reader and 64 MB CompactFlash. I am experiencing the EXACT same problem with trying to read or write using Gemulator Explorer. I have tried it on two different Windows 2000 Pro systems. Anyone have other suggestions to get an image to the CompactFlash card using the ZiO Card Reader?

I was reading the Gemulator Explorer 2.03 requirments... Are the Adaptec's lastest ASPI SCSI driver required to read the CompactFlash card using Gemulator Explorer 2.03?

Interesting... I get the SCSI device to appear using the same CF Reader/Writer on my Windows 98 system. I must be missing drivers for Windows 2000.

What about NT users?...I'm using a CF with a PCMCIA CF Reader....I can see the card fine in Explorer...I haven't attempted to load Gemulator after reading this thread and seeing that the only seemingly successful combination so far is Win98 with a USB reader.

So for now, I'm using Audrey and fs-cifs to copy images to the CF.

I have used it in Windows 2000 with a PCMCIA adapter. I just had to reboot the machine with the card in the PCMCIA slot. Gemulator was able to see the CF card.
