| After much frustration and hair pulling, I was finally able to compile a text-mode Jabber client for Audrey. The client is called jabberx, and you can find a little bit of information on it here http://jabber-x.sourceforge.net/ . It is a text-mode client, so no fancy gui, but it does work well, and uses colors to keep things easy to read and understand. Last night I logged in for a while from Audrey, and was connected to my accounts on Yahoo!, AIM, and ICQ all from the same client, and chatted with friends on each, so I know it all works. I was running voyager and several pterms at the same time, so I feel like it should play pretty well with other stuff on the Audrey.
It might take me a day or 2 to get all the right files together with instructions, and then I'll post it. If you are interested, I highly recommend that you get familiar with Jabber first. Go to http://www.jabber.org, read the User Guide, download a Windows client (I've been using Winjab), choose a server, set up an account, set up your roster (buddy list), etc. You can do all this from jabberx, but in my opinion getting familiar with Jabber on a gui client first will make the transition to jabberx much simpler. Jabber isn't rocket science, but it is different enough that there is a definate learning curve. I think it is worth it. After using Winjab for a couple of days now, I will probably use it as my main IM. You don't get every feature of every IM program, but for me the simplicity of a single program and a single interface will probably make running 3 separate IMs a thing of the past. And now it works on Audrey! | |
