Another QNX image with dial up and more

New MessageAnother QNX image with dial up and more (modified 0 times) jukebox

Inspired by the MQNX image I created an image that looks exactly like the QNX 6.0 RTP, but with some of the old Aydrey apps, mail, dial-up and more in ActionPalette.
More info here as well as in the image itself in Welcome:
http://www.prins.net/audrey/index.html

With this image you have the choice to use dial-up or ethernet, but at this time you will have no mp3 and no network printing. For the rest it's about all there. It appears that the original Audrey Apps can coexist with shelf and the other 6.0 apps. Included are ped, pfm, psin, pv, phcalc, phlip, savercfg, pwmopts, voyager, pterm. Local printing should work too.

I put the image up for testing purposes, so let me know what works and what not.

Just curious did you have many problems getting phdialer to work. I've moved it over th my audrey, but since I have broad band, I haven't gotten around to testing it.

I still run this image with the old Audrey Internet Setup in the ActionPalette, which works fine for dialup and ethernet.
I have phlip and phdialer setup too now, but in phdialer pppd failes to create the pid and I'm disconnected. Maybe it needs the pppd from the RTP 6.0. The modified autoconnect works.
In my case I think I may drop phlip and phdialer again, because it serves no real purpose and I can use the space for something else.
I made my image with all the dial-up users in mind. However I realize also they have no means of loading it in their Audrey, except with a flashcard from someone else..

Jukebox,

Could you post this image at AudreyHacking.com? I'm having a lot of problems getting it from your site. Thanks if you can as I would love to try out your hard work.

I'll ask if they want to host this image.
During the weekend and after working hours it should work with speeds between 10 - 20 KB/s. I just uploaded a new image with an average speed of 15 KB/s.
This latest image could be a kind of final version. Only some adjustments in kcron may have to be made still.
For more info and to check it out:

Jukebox,

Tried for an hour or so it get it to download, no luck. I'd get 1/2 meg and it would stop. I only have 56k dialup in my remote area and I think my service is too slow to grab it without it backing up and quiting on me. Download resume with GetRight just enlarged the final file size so that was no good for me either. I'll check back with you later on this as Christmas is 2 days away and other things must be done around the house for the holidays. Season's greating all.

I've had the same problems. It will only get to half a meg on both my WinXP and Linux Boxes... I'm anxious to try it though!

Jukebox,

Thanks for sharing this nice piece of work you have done. All I need to do is to add shared folders on my main box and it will do most all that I need. I'm impressed with the blending of the two systems. Your new image and Davinci27's image both show how good the Audrey really is. Thanks to both of you guys!

Please forgive the extreme newbie question... but what does this image do? The screen shot on Jukebox's site looks very impresive. I downloaded the zip file and it contains a single .cf file. Do I follow the instructions in the Audrey FAQ to do a CF Restore with this file on the CF Card? If so the procedure sounds simple enough. And I figure if I do a CF Backup of the original image I can always go back to my original Audry software, right?

Thanks

TruGeek,
As long as you archive your current image you can try a new one and always go back to the old one. http://www.audreyhacking.com has the links on its homepage how to archive and restore images.

I'm trying to work with QNX platform, any help would be appreciated.

1. What command do you use to test and debug an image?

2. With the original image, how do you go in to modify it?

3. I understand how to mkifs from a buildfile, but if you only have an image file how do you re-create the buildfile.

Anybody have trouble flashing this image?

I know that I'm making the image correctly because I've already tried several of them.
When I power up with the datebook button held down it just hangs on the "Loading from CompactFlash" message.

Evo,
i flashed 2 audreys with this image with no problems. have you tried reinstalling the image to the flash? The images are easily corruptable when left in the audrey during power off.

I've retried several times, all with the same result. If the image is corrupt wouldn't you see the "FATAL: Corrupt image" error?

Just to make sure that I was doing things correctly I copied another image to the same CF card using the same procedure as this one and it worked. I guess the next thing to try is to download the image again.

Thanks

Current zip size is since 12/30/01 12,252,363 and image 16,515,072 bytes.
If you have any problems flashing this image check these numbers and if yours are different download the zip again.

You can make some more "disk" space available in Audrey when using this image by doing the following.
rm /nto/bin/bkgdmgr (about 100K). I had plans for this file, but that appears not possible.
Also you can compress some files by going to /.cmp/nto/bin and compress the following files with the cmp command:
cmp fs-cifs, fs-nfs2, nfsd, ftp, telnet and pppd.
Nothing can go wrong using the cmp command, already compressed files stay as they are.
Altogether you will gain about 150K. If you get the message "file not found" they will be in photon/bin.

The current download is always jukebox1.zip, but since 12/29/01 the image is jukebox2.cf. This latest image has the media player with mp3 streaming and the Real Player with streaming audio only. The screen saver is gone. So if you downloaded the first image you may want to download again.

Curious,
As far as I know all you can do with an image is copy it to your Audrey. If you want to make changes you make them in Audrey.
I'm not familiar with the develop platform you downloaded.

My boot.sh is empty. I put all scripts in /kojak/go in the beginning of the file. You have to make a script for the mount and use execv to make it work.
Hope this helps.

I installed the image and am very impressed with the new look of my Audrey. Unfortunately, I'm having problems with the old e-mail application. The window containing the message body text shows up with a blue background and no readable text. I've tried rebooting but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Any idea what might be going wrong?

In the original Audrey you were reading your mail in Browser that always ran in the background. Now you have to run Voyager in the background to read your mail. For this reason voyager starts up at boot time and you should minimize it and keep it in the background.
You can exit voayager at any time and start it again when you want to read mail, whatever is most convenient for you. Voyager uses a lot of memory and when it exits it deletes the cache. (with the current settings).
If you receive a wav or mp3 attachment you can click on them and the mediaplayer will play the attachment for you.

I haven't received a single complaint or problem about this image. It is stable and network connections work too without disconnects or other problems.
The only way I know to get problems is when you keep too much email and receive larger attachments. Delete them if you don't need them or move them to your PC. Also voyager may cause problems by adding all your activity in its history file. I don't know if this file can grow indefinately, but if it does it will be a problem on the long run. Same for your cookies. You can safely delete these 2 files at all times.
I posted some more info on my Audrey homepage, especially if you want to add some other features.

I encountered a minor problem with the time setting in Audrey.
You may notice shelf shows a different time then Day/Time shows.
Shelf starts before time is set from the internet. CST is hard coded in Audrey and shelf and apps like PhAlarm will run on CST, while kojak apps in Audrey will run on the Time Zone you have set in Date/Time in ActionPalette. If you run into this problem edit /kojak/go and put this line as an example for Eastern Standard Time before shelf starts, right in the beginning:
export TZ=EST5 or whatever goes for your time zone. You may have to adjust this for Daylight Savings Time by adding DST I believe. In this example for Eastern Daylight Savings Time this line would read:
export TZ=EST5DST Again, adjust this line for your Time Zone.

I don't consider bringing out an updated image very soon. In the meantime I update my web pages almost on a daily basis with fixes like this one and other info.

This image is great!

How do you launch VNC Viewer?

Thanks!

01-29-2002 14:10:16

New MessageRE:Another QNX image with dial up and more (modified 0 times) jukebox

To start vncviewer type this at the prompt and press enter:
vncviewer <ip>:<number>
<ip> is the ip number of the box you want to connect to.
<number> is the screen #, usually 0 or 1, depends on the setup. A request for a password will follow.
If VNCServer is the only x server running it will be 0.
This vncviewer cannot scroll, so if you want to connect to a windows box set that one in 640x480 res. first and you will see the whole screen. VNCServers on most unix type platforms will allow you to set the vncserver screen res. independent from the screen res. of that PC.

The vncviewer in Audrey is the client and you must have a server on the other side. Downloads for most platforms are here:
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/download.html
I can't get acid callerid to work reliable. That has nothing to do with this image, but more with your phone setup, how long your wiring is and how many devices are hooked up in what order. Acid works in my bathroom as the first device on the line, but not in my office as one of the last at the end. You should try it. If you have caller ID activated and it works for you, it's a very nice app.

Wow! This image is excellent. Thanks, jukebox, for all your hard work (and for sharing)!

Two questions:

1) If I bring up the "taskbar" at the bottom of the screen it appears to show certain apps running ("email," for instance), but I can't bring them up. If I click on these buttons they turn blue but nothing else. How can I switch between tasks easily?

2) In sound recorder... one of my Audreys plays back the sounds with a lot of strange screeching distortion. It works fine if I record a sound file through the mail app, however. I have fooled with the mixer settings to no avail. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Thanks.

You may want to read the info available on my Audrey home page for a better understanding of this image.
Try to see it this way. You have two systems in one Audrey: the old Kojak apps is the first, shelf and the other new apps is the second.
All the old Kojak apps still work with the buttons. You can see them run in the bottom shelf, but you activate them with the buttons only.
Shelf works only for the new QNX apps.
I can switch tasks with Alt - Esc (paste - Snapshot) between all apps.Press those buttons a couple of times and you will see. There is a certain logic for me there, but I cannot explain. To make things easier you can just start mail or ActionPalette with their buttons and kill them with the Datebook and AddressBook buttons and use shelf for all other QNX apps.I suggest you use this last method as the easiest and most reliable.
Your other problem with SoundRecorder suggests you have a problem in one of your Audreys. I cannot help you with that one.

I agree with you about the full screen Browser.. If you run voyager in the background and click on Welcome! in shelf you will open Welcome in what is considered the full screen voyager.
This may come close to what you want. If so, open Shelf Cfg and see the parameters used there to get the full screen with voyager. You can use this from the command line or make a script.
The first voyager always has to connect to voyager.server with the -P parameter in the command line. The next one a kind of piggie backs to the previous and starts correctly without the voyager.server in the command line.
Hope this helps.

Hi, this is just a little shell script to help using the qnx find program. I put it here, since i didn't think that it deserved it's own thread. good luck to all.

/bin/search
------------------------------cut here

#! /nto/bin/ksh
find / * | grep -v "find:" | grep -v "proc" | grep -v ".cmp" | grep $1

------------------------------cut here

it's not perfect and performance is not great, but yields a more readable listing of files you want to search for. i just got sick of looking for files with all of that crap in the results.
