If you obtain a used Ipaq IA-1,there may be old information on the unit from the previous owner, and it may be password protected, these are the steps to erase the old information, reset the unit to new out-of-the box like. 1.You will first need to call MSN to set up you account. There is a customer service number, and a tech support number, they can be found on the maching by plugging in the machine, getting the blue screen, and clicking on the top right hand side connection setting, then you will see all kinds of questions, click on the one that says"I have a problem that wasnt described above",this will take you to the screen that says Contact Technical support, write these numbers down as you will need them, you also will see a box toward the bottom.I will mention more about this later. The number to set-up your account is the customer service number. When you call this number, they may tell you you cant register the device, but tell them tech support said you could.I think MSN is winding down support of this device, and discourging new customers. There mo fee currently is $21.95.After you register and get your new e-mail address which will be something@msn.com,they will give you a temp password, write these down as you will need these to configure the unit for your use. After you have this info.Plug the unit in you will get the Compaq screen, then the blue screen with the butterfly,on the top remember to click the connection settings, then that question I have some other problem that wasnt described, this will bring you to the screen with those MSN phone numbers,in that box that appears near the bottom type in erase, and click go,this will erase all the old owners information, and password. The unit will then let you register the device for your use.It will ask for name/address/phone number/e-mail address and that password, use the one MSN picked for you, then change it later on you account in MSN Passport, and on the unit. Also there is a required nickname this is really a screen name, what ever you put in hear will appear on the top of that blue screen with a picture if you chose, your suppose to put you first and last name here, but you can leave it blank.Remember before you add the above information you have to enter your local MSN phone numbers for your area,so the unit can connect to MSN service. Also when you get past the blue screen, and your configured and connected you will see a MSN search page, instead of the MSN Companion start page,MSN has taken the start page off,as when the unit fist comes on you will see the box in the lower right hand side that has blue MSN and the butterfly, this then dissapers, and you see a white box where that was, this is why the start page is not there, also the instant messageing, and chat dont function,as MSN has disconnected this as well, you will hear a recording when you call customer service, telling you this.Other than that all functions work.Since the start page is not there, you have to click on the options tab,in the lower right hand side to go to setting questions, reload pages, and many more things in there, theres even a tutorial in there about the unit, about printers, instant messageing, chat, this is both visual, and audio with a ladys voice, this takes a moment to load, and if you see the stage, and on the top a message saying loading, you are in the right place,it just takes a while to load then will begin,it will even show you that start page what it looks like, plus the instant messaging, chat even if there no longer functional. Is best to look closley at everything in this options tab,as you will learn alot about the unit there since theres no start page. You can also look at your account at MSN Passport there, just make sure your loged off on this.To log off the unit,go back to the search page, press the big butterfly button on top of the keyboard. Then click sign off on the bottom right hand side. Then turn off the power button on the keyboard,on the top right.I hope this information is useful to someone new to the companion.

MSN does not support these units any longer, hopefully we will have a easy quick fix to this soon but I have been working on it since 2003 and no such luck unless you really want to do the modifications and hack the unit. Easier to buy a new PC than go through the trouble but I am still sure we will find a use for these units one of these days. You will not ever be able to get the unit to download software until we can put the software on the site the companion goes to or modify the Web download page. Once the unit is erased you will get a error message or no OS system found message.

Good Luck Bro

i have about 12 of these units some have midori which i have no idea how to use and the rest still have MSN companion.

all the different steps are quite frustrating as i try to follow them basically i want the thing for instant messaging, browsing and music streaming through my wireless connection.

is that possible.
