Bootable CF images?

I have a hacked IA-1, have installed various OS's on it, and I've finally settled on Midori because of its CATC support. Unfortunately, my SanDisk appears to be messed up, as I get I/O errors every time I try to write the Midori image to it. I wouldn't even have a problem booting from the CF card, except that the Midori image I have freaks out because it's being booted from hdc instead of hda. I came across a rather old post about an image which supported the sort of booting I'd need. Unfortunately the method described requires a Linux box, something I don't have handy.

Does anyone have any sort of image that supports booting from the CF card and the CATC USB ethernet chipset and would fit on a 64MB CF card? TIA.

Does anyone have any sort of image that supports booting from the CF card

Not yet, but I will soon: my IA-1 came today, and I plan to do all my booting from CF, because I want to tinker with various OSes on it.

If I can't find an image already built, I'll go ahead and put one together. If there's any interest beyond you and me, I'll look into hosting it somewhere.

It seems to me that the ideal setup for booting from CF would be to have multiple partitions, just like a hard disk. That way, people who don't have the expertise to build bootable images can add apps and data files that meet their needs to the CF.

However, my first quick look at how the Midori image gets built turned up references to the El Torito standard, and I don't think El Torito CDs can be partitioned. Does anyone know of a HOWTO for creating bootable CF cards that look like hard drives instead of CD-ROMs?

Think of it as an incentive to get a real OS for your desktop

Thanks to neptune's instructions, it was dead easy to build an image for booting from CF. It can be found at:

http://u1.netgate.net/~ran/ia1/

This is a temporary home: due to limitations on storage and bandwidth on my netgate account, it won't do for the long term.

I built it from the build kit at ia1hacking.com, but it looks like it might have been better to use the kit at m4i.homeip.net: it's more recent and, iirc, there were some significant improvements in USB support between kernel 2.4.18 (used in the image above) and 2.4.20 (in the m4i.homeip.net kit). Any guidance from people who have used both?

thanks so much
I'm not sure how to msg one of you with my email address, but maybe you could post the img on here, or someplace else?
