Will the IA-1 work without the supplied keyboard?

I just picked up a IA-1 for Goodwill for 6 bucks and discovered this rather brilliant use for what was originally a useless piece of history. It did, however, not come with a keyboard. I have flashed the unit and when I try to get into the BIOS I can't seem to get the keys to register. I am using an Apple Pro USB keyboard (only because its a good keyboard) From what I have read, the F10 key should be registering as the Compaq key. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks,
SOLASASN

Not sure what you mean by "flashed", since I've not heard of anyone successfully booting to an alternate OS from the original BIOS to run a flasher - but a standard USB keyboard *should* work. Some IA-1's were "unhackable" (short of physically replacing the flash ROM), and don't respond to F10 at all.

That said, if your machine >can< enter the BIOS with F10/Compaq key - it should work from a USB keyboard just as well. Internally, the I/R keyboard and mouse controller is attached to the PS/2 port on the southbridge chip - but the "hackable" BIOS does have legacy USB device support.

I use a "regular" ps2 PC type keyboard with my IA1 that is flashed to Midori. With a USB to serial keyboard/mouse adapter. The adapter cost only about $7. I presume that it would also work with an un-flashed IA1. Much nicer to have normal F keys.

Slightly OT; do all IR IA-1 respond to all IR IA-1 keyboards? Or are they "keyed" to the base unit? If so, is there a way to re-program to make them happy together?

I have a non-responsive keyboard and I am hoping that the KB is NOT defective.....

Thanks ia advance....

I read the bottom of the keyboard and find the answer there.... Keyboards _are_ key'ed to base units.

That discovered, I tried a USB KB but it appears that the POST process doesnt enable the KB in time to press F10 to enter BIOS setup. Darn. USB mouse works well, though.

There were two units for sale at the thrift store and I watched a woman walk out of the store with the my keyboard.... and I got her's.... Little did I know at the time.

Any one got an idea!!!!

I have two IA-1's and both keyboards work on both base units.

Took the units apart and removed the colored lenses, kb worked OK. Put it back together and I dunno what made the difference, but now I have no problem.... Keyboard gets into BIOS OK. Now to work on the CF and booting Linux.
