No. To boot from USB requires BIOS support. I have more modern equipment than the IA-1 that will not boot from USB. However, if you're interested in running linux, I suppose you could create an initrd image on a small Compact flash and have it mount /root from
the USB device.

http://staff.washington.edu/gray/KnoppixCFguide.html has some good info. Take the basic concept except use root=/dev/sda1 (or whatever your USB partition would be).
