Upgrading the "pods"
A possible solution for all our upgrades?????????

New MessageUpgrading the "pods" (modified 0 times) Epodfreak
Here is my idea:

Since most of us agree that the lcd screen/touch screen is the most expensive part of the Epods, what if we formed a "group" purchase to see if Ezex will make a replacement MOTHERBOARD ONLY perhaps with a faster processor and CE 3.0 on the rom.

I, for one, would be willing to pay +/- $150.00 if such a thing were available. Just a nice way to rebuild/increase value of our toys into the "real deal".

Well, what do you guys think?

I am on board. I also work for a LARGE company that I might be able to pull some leverage.

I would do it.

Nope, they won't do it. They are contractually prevented from doing so.

Good idea -- but why would they manufacture the 3.0 for only a few hundred of ePoder owners who aren't even paying the Internet fees to support the supplied company? If epods wasn't successful with selling thousands of these devices what do they have to gain from supporting a far smaller percentage?

They probably have a minimum of like 1000 for an order. Maybe higher, 10,000 (isn't that how many ePods were made).

But if you can swing a deal, I'm in for sure!!
CE 3.0 and a faster MIPS would be cool.
And more onboard RAM-- 32MB instead of 16.

New MessageNo faster CPU available yet... (modified 0 times) itsvincer
The ePods is based on a reference design from Toshiba; I've never actually seen a Juno, but I have read the spec sheet.

All of the logic and circuitry responsible for typical non-cpu tasks (i.e. bridge chip functions on a PC mobo) on a pc, are directly attached to the cpu core, and this cpu is the top of the model line.

Increasing the cpu speed would thus involve a mobo redesign, as the faster mips variants DON'T have peripheral management in core, and even have a different package.

They could offer CE3.0 and more RAM, but as has been mentioned previously, contractual obligations don't allow them to do so now.

Guess what guys... I've been pretty vague about upgrading epods. But, I know someone who could get a version of the epod with WinCE 3.0 on it. It is possible, it does exists, but it is expensive. And what they offer apparently is the same thing you hold in your hand but with WinCE 3.0. Nothing more as far as apps go. Lets just say a little bird told me so.

Epodfreak for $145 that you'd pay to "upgrade it" and the $300+ you'd get for the epods by hocking it on eBay you could actually get a faster machine with more memory than runs complete apps - Compaq Ipaq [pocket PC], Compaq Aero 8000, Vadem Clio, Sharp Mobilon Tripad are just some of the models that come to mind.

Vagitizer : Yes, Ezex will sell you an eval copy of the epods one (well, their base model that the epods was built on) with whatever you like on it for US$599.

But that doesn't change the fact that

1. You would still need some way to copy the ROM contents off it
2. You would still need some way to flash the ROM to the epods.

I think those are the real problems, far more than whether or not PPC 3.0 can be obtained.

I don't want to sound negative, because a 3.0 upgrade would be great, I just think we need to solve the difficult problems first before we run towards the easy stuff.

Oh, and SiliconIce : Their minimum order size is 500.

I agree with you 110% and then some. WinCE 3.0 is not an important issue now. We do need to work on the important issues. One of my thoughts is... can we add applications and dll to it that are missing from other comprable units? Where can we find the .exe and .dll files? I do know that if they are in RAM they will superceed the ROM files. But this will be at a big memory expense. So where do you think we should put our efforts into; Flash program, finding the needed .exe and .dll files .... ???? There's alot of potential here! and btw, I heard that an evaluation unit with 3.0 would cost between $700-$800!!

I have access to a 3.0 unit. If somebody has a program that can read it into a file, and a bad MB which can be rewired as a programmer there may be some possibilities!

The other obvious route would be to ask Toshiba how to reprogram one of their reference Juno units. They may well have an app or some circuit diagrams.

Vagitizer :
I personally would be over the moon if I could have a working Pocket Outlook. I'd therefore like that to be the priority. ;)

Your not the only one... I am working on this. I'm hoping to get the entire suite. No question's on "how you ganna do that...?" I still don't know... but am working with MS people to get the suite. I suggest if there are MS people on this board.. to check on this also. I was told that there are licensing issues involved though. None the less.

3.0 contains INBOX but not full outlook. INBOX can do POP3, SMTP, IMAP4. Also has Pocket WORD. That's it as standard.

I just did a full build with PlatformBuilder for the Mips 4100. That also does not contain any of the other apps. Like I said before, the only place is to get them from MS. But another problem still exists. Some of the support dll's are missing from the epods anyways. I noticed that labledit.dll doesn't exist on the epod. This is a support dll, among others. Still working on it.

Alex

als123, you have a rom of 3.0 don't you? Did this come from a nadapc? If so, see if they did a maxall build on it. you should be looking for wceappsfe support files. (search ms msdn site). Let me know if those files are there on the 3.0 build you have.

Thanks

The no .lib files were found on the WINDOWS directory. Where else do you want me to look? This is not a Nada version
as it is a basic CE 3.0 shell build 126. It does not have any development tools.
