To quote the old adage, you can choose any two from "fast," "cheap" and "good." You're asking for all three.
802.11b compliant devices are getting fairly cheap (~$100 for a card), and they're a decent speed. Check out http://www.practicallynetworked.com for reviews. It's the only wireless solution I would consider.

Homerclease,
The cheapest wireless package is the one you can get from me. I have two Proxim Symphony PC cards (4402-05) and one Symphony HRF USB adapter for sale. Please contact me if interested: steveparis@hotmail.com

Hmmm. I was about to go back to the store and return the Proxim Symphony USB adapter I just bought(for $69) because Proxim tech support told me (ten minutes ago) that it will not work with a 4402-05 card on a CE device - that is, not with an ePods. They said ONLY the PCI card would talk to the epods in ad-hoc mode. Is this incorrect? Someone please tell me fast, as tomorrow morning I go to exchange it!!

Well I can't speak for the USB version, but the Isa version works fine in ad hoc mode
